The Innovation: Since the current models of engagement between industryacademia are typically pointtopoint and do not offer themselves to larger scales of engagement, Wipro has rolled out the firstofitskind Magnum Opus initiative, with its unique approach, scale and distributed nature. It is a scalable, costeffective, innovative model to nurture the young university talent pool across India, utilize the open source environment and propel the future Indian talent in technology towards innovation excellence.

The Magnum Opus Model has a Big Theme Vision, where it identifies a large problem or opportunity area. The high level solution architecture for the theme is envisioned by Wipro architects, following which the architecture is broken down into manageable chunks (projects) for solutioning. Typically, there may be 50100 projects in every phase of the implementation. The next step is to set up the infrastructure required by the project, which typically involve access to information, key tools, frameworks and collaboration networks for distributed development. Each project is owned by multiple student teams of size 2 or 3. Each project team is guided and monitored closely by a Wipro Mentor to ensure quality deliverables. Redundancy helps bring out the most innovative solutions to problems.

Key Achievements: The impact of the project has gone beyond the expectations of the different stake holders. 265 out of 430 students have successfully completed the projects (on par with industry standards) and have been immediately absorbed into Wipro Technologies and deployed in industry projects. The integrated SLOF demo output from the lowcost Magnum Opus innovation model already has customer traction proving the models working to produce innovative solutions. Different business units in Wipro have appreciated the perceptible difference in the skill levels of the Magnum Opus project students. The Smart Techie magazine has covered the Magnum Opus initiative in its October Issue in the campus report article Applying Innovation @ Campus. Its launch itself drew a lot of media attention across India. Wipro plans to scale the Magnum Opus model for 2000 students this year, working on multiple technology themes.
