A. Geometry Problems: 1) Geometry.

Find the perimeter of a triangle if one side is 11 inches, another side is 1/3 the perimeter, and the third side is one less than 1/4 the perimeter.

2) Geometry. An NFL playing field is a rectangle. The length of the field (excluding the end zones) is 40 more yards than twice the width. The perimeter of the playing field is 260 yards. What are the dimensions of the field in yards?

3) Geometry. The length of a rectangle is 2 more than 3 times the width, and the perimeter is 28 inches. What are the dimensions of the rectangle?

4) Geometry. Consider two circles, a smaller one and a larger one. If the larger one has a radius that is 3 feet larger than that of the smaller circle and the ratio of the circumferences is 2:1, what are the radii of the two circles?

5) Geometry. The perimeter of a semicircle is doubled when the radius is increased by 1. Find the radius of the semicircle.

B. Rate_Motion Problems: 1) Exercise. A jogger and a walker cover the same distance. The jogger finishes in 40 minutes. The walker takes an hour. How fast is each exerciser moving if the jogger runs 2 mph faster than the walker?

2) Travel. A high school student in Seattle, Washington attended the University of Central Florida. On the way to UCF he took a southern route. After graduation he returned to Seattle via a northern trip. On both trips he had the same average speed. If the southern trek took 45 hours and the northern trek took 50 hours, and the northern trek was 300 miles longer, how long was each trip?

3)Distance-Rate-Time. College roommates leave for their first class in the same building. One walks at 2 mph and the other rides his bike at a slow 6 mph pace. How long will it take each to get to class if the walker takes 12 minutes longer to get to class and they travel on the same path?

4)Distance-Rate-Time. A long-distance delivery service sends out a truck with a package at 7 A.M. At 7:30 the manager realizes there was another package going to the same location. He sends out a car to catch the truck. If the truck travels at an average speed of 50 mph and the car travels at 70 mph, how long will it take the car to catch the truck?

5) Tricia and Janine are roommates and leave Houston on Interstate 10 at the same time to visit their families for a long weekend. Tricia travels west and Janine travels east. If tricia's average speed is 12 mph faster than Janine's, find the speed of each if they are 320 miles apart in 2 hours and 30 minutes. II. NUMBER RELATION PROBLEMS:

1) Ten less than three times a certain number is 14. Determine the number.

2)

If 1 is added to a number and this sum is doubled, the result is 5 more than the number. Find the number.

3) The denominator of a fraction exceeds the numerator by 1. If 4 is added to the numerator of the fraction, and 3 is subtracted from the denominator, the result is 7. Find the original fraction.

4) The first of three numbers exceeds twice the second number by 4, while the third number is twice the first. If the sum of the three numbers is 54, what are the numbers?

5) One number is 3 less than twice a second number. Twelve times the first number decreased by twice the second number is 9 more than seven times the second number. Determine the numbers.

III. AGE PROBLEMS:

1) In thirty years, Leo will be eight times as old as he was 12 years ago. How old is he now?

2) One-fourth of Kaylas age 8 years ago equals one-seventh of his age 22 years hence. How old is she now?

3) Jun is twice as old as Janice. Ten years ago, Jun was four times as old as Janice was at that time. How old is each?

4) The sum of Joyces and Connies age is 64. Twenty six years from now, Connie will be twice as old as Joyce is now. What are their ages now?

5) A mother is now four times as old as her daughter. In two years the mother will be seventeen times as old as the daughter was six years ago. What are their ages now?

Exercise 2.3

Show the complete solutions of the following problems:

1. The shadow of a flagpole on horizontal ground is 10.5 meters when the angle of elevation of the sun is 3325. How tall is the flagpole? 2. A surveyor on top of a 70 m building, finds that the angle of the depression of the marker is 4730. How far is the marker from the base of the building?

3. The angle of elevation of the top of the tower is found to be 42 at point A and 52 at point B, 28 ft. nearer the tower. What is the height of the tower if both observation points and the base of the tower are in the same horizontal plane? 4. Pepe and Pilar are 105 m apart are on the same horizontal ground. Pepe sees that a kite is directly over the head of Pilar and its angle of elevation is 6720. How high is the kite? How far is the kite from where Pepe stands? 5. From a cliff 1500 m high, the two lighthouses in opposite directions have angles of depression of 329 and 2846 , respectively. Find the distance between the two lighthouses. 6. A car travels 125 km on a bearing of 3815 then make a turn on a bearing of 315 km. Find the distance from the starting point to the end of the trip.
