Instructor: Bryan Penfound Office: 4CM46A Phone: 258-3892 Office Hours: Wednesday from 10:30am - 12:30pm Classes: MWF 9:30am to 10:20am in Room 4C60 (Note also the Tutoring Centre: Room 3G10, call 786-9129 for appointment or availability) Topics: Systems of linear equations, matrices, matrix products, inverses, elementary matrices, determinants, R n as a vector space, dot and cross product with applications, complex numbers Textbook: Elementary Linear Algebra (Fifth Edition) by Stanley I. Grossman Outline : Chapter 1: Chapter 2: Chapter 3: Sections 1.1 1.10 Sections 2.1 2.5 Sections 3.1 3.5, handout on complex numbers

Topics will be covered as time permits. This course also uses WebCT, a web-based course management system. The WebCT page will contain other information, such as handouts, test solutions or important messages. If you have not used WebCT before, tutorials for using WebCT or for claiming your password on-line are available at the web-site for the Centre for Distributed / Distance Learning: http://ddl.uwinnipeg.ca/ Grading: Test 1 (worth 20%): Wednesday, October 19 Room 4C60 Test 2 (worth 20%): Monday, November 21 Room 4C60 Final Exam (worth 60%): December 14, 2011, 6:00pm to 8:00pm (check UW door postings to confirm final exam room and time)

Withdrawal: The last day to withdraw without academic penalty from this course is Thursday, October 27 Policies Please refer to Section VII of the University Course Calendar for policies on grading, appeals and academic misconduct. Students who are not able to provide identification during the test will have one day to produce it. Tests will not be graded until assurance of identity is made. No calculators are allowed. Cell phones and other electronic devices must be turned off during classes, tests, final exam.
