This is a very special occasion, it is not everyday that we have our President with us, it is not every Sunday that we have the President of the Philippines and all her entourage in our midst, we feel honored, we feel proud, we feel privileged, we feel specially blessed to have Her Excellency Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and so many important dignitaries in our midst, praying for our families in the Philippines. We pray not only every Sunday, but everyday for our country, for peace, for progress and prosperity.

I greet all of you. We are happy that our President and our Government share our feelings of distance from our own country. We unite ourselves in prayer that God indeed will bless our country with the progress that we all desire for the material and spiritual well-being of our people, God bless us all.

We all are equal before God. And every time we attend the Holy Mass, we all feel one, united in prayer. In our faith, there is no Greek or Jew, there is no Filipino or Korean, there is no Tagalog, Cebuano, Ilocano, or Bicolano, there is no distinction of racial, or material differences, we are all children of one God, who loves us all and who forgives us our sins, we have a God who insists on loving us even if sometimes we are not faithful to him. God love us, even if we do not feel that we love him. God loves especially those who hate Him.

We all feel closer to the Lord as we worship him in the Church. We know, although oftentimes we forget that the Lord is with us, whether we are in Church in prayer, or in the houses where we live, or in the work and even when we are at play. Because Jesus is always with us in our lives, in fact, in our lives we reflect the presence of Jesus in us.

There is one thing very special in our Catholic Faith wherever we are in whatever country, we have the same Holy Mass, the same sacraments, the same worship. It is the same Jesus that we receive at Holy Communion, we have the same mysteries of faith, the same love for Jesus and the Holy Father. And we praise and thank God for this possibility of worshipping him and thanking him.

Maybe we do not have this special feeling of Church and worship when we are in the Philippines, we take spiritual things for granted, we take it for granted because the Church is part of our everyday life. We hear and see church and church-men every time, almost every day, in the home, in the office, at work or even in everyday life. We say that our faith is with us since 450 years ago and will always be with. Some say, perhaps may reason, they are even tired of the Church.

But some of us can only discover that this Catholic Faith of ours is indeed special. Some say we miss our faith only when we are in places where the Catholic Faith is a minority. One day I said Mass in Nigeria, in Northern Nigeria, where the catholics were only a few thousands in a sea of millions of Islamic faith, it was awesome, it was fearsome, it was a faith awakening experience.

In Korea, the catholics are a minimals, they form slightly over10% of the local population. About 5,000,000 catholics out of a population of 50,000,000. The arrival of the Catholic Faith in Korea is also an experience that only the providence of God can explain. In Korea, the seeds of Catholicism arrived only in 1784 and was brought not by priests missionaries, but by three Korean diplomats who learned of the faith in China, they translated the catechism of Christian doctrine and taught and preached the dignity of the human person as a creation of God. Like Pentecost, the good news spread wide and fast. But immediately a few years afterwards, the early catholics of Korea, all lay men and women, suffered violent persecutions from the ruling classes, many died, we have records of how they lived and died, about twenty minutes from here, there is a martyrs shrine, the church of Choltusan, on top of a steep cliff, by the river Han, where the early martyrs were tortured and thrown into the river.

It was only 60 years later, in 1836 that Missionaries came to give support to the church, almost all the missionaries were all martyred and in 1845, the first Korean Priest came and was martyred barely one year after reaching Korea and most interesting is that St. Andrew Kim Daegon was trained for 3 years in the Philippines before coming to Korea, 3 years of training and only 1 year at 25 years old that he was martyred. Maybe, this can be an added link to the Philippines-Korea historical ties. And this happened about 150 years ago.

Door to my dreams
by : Lyn Carpio To dream and hope are the least we can do in this world full of uncertainties. To dream of becoming somebody in this competitive world is like climbing a mountain with a dangerous trail. But after having surpassed many risks, challenges, pain, and danger, it feels good to realize that you have finally reached the top. My younger days were full of hopes, dreams and fancy imaginations. Through the years as I grew older, I became realistic. Life wasnt bad at all though a little bit hard. But I still kept my childhood dreams in my heart, hoping and dreaming that one day I would be able to fulfill them all. Before, to travel around the world was one of my biggest dreams, but that I know, is too far from realization. Little did I know that I will be able to set foot in a foreign land and that was enough for me to be thankful to the Almighty God. He gave me the chance to open a doorthe door to my dreams. And that started it all. Now I know that dreams really do come truethat they are real. I am truly grateful that He allowed me to see through it, to experience the unexpected. Its an awesome feeling of joy to know that a part of your dream has become a reality. It inspired me to strive harder, not to be on top but to be able to achieve something for my self-fulfillment. To fulfill ones dream is not easy. People you meet along the way may be hard on you. Some may put you down because of envy or it is just their own way, but always have the strength to stand still and be determined. Others may discourage you and will always oppose your opinions and ideas, but if you think youre in the right track, never give up. Honestly, it was the sweetest triumph after passing through all of those trials. Always remember that there is a time for everything, be patient enough to wait, just like what I did. And it paid off. Do not be in a hurry. Take things one at a time and you will surely go places. Above all, do not forget to ask the guidance of the Almighty God. The things we dream and asked of Him will be given at the right time, in His own time. And I believed that prayer plays an important role in achieving my dreams. Never get tired of praying. I never forget to say a little prayer everyday though there are times that I dont feel like it. Be grateful to the Lord for whatever you have received, whatever it may be, always have an open heart to share with others especially the less fortunate. With those actions, God will reward us with His Blessings. I am truly grateful for all the things he had given meeverything! Thank you Lord for opening the doorthe door to my dreams.

Kamusta sa lahat ng masugid na mambabasa at tagapagtangkilik ng ating SAMBAYANAN! Im back from my very short vacation and it feels great to serve the community once again. For this weeks issue, we bring you the Solemnity of the Holy Trinity, the recent visit of our President GMA here in Seoul, Korea for the ASEAN-ROK Summit, the message of the Papal Nuncio during his homily in a special mass with the president and the usual stuff like our Likhaan and Sanaysay pages. Our belief in the Holy Trinity somehow gives us an analogy in our daily life as what the reflection by Fr. Pierce talked about (see Karunungan portion). We might agree that its difficult to fulfill every role in a family, work, and community (country) given only one body. The same goes with the Holy Trinity. It is a given fact that some sects or religions question the veracity of this persona but we, Catholics, believes so, because it is the truth and this cements the foundation of our faith. As said, our belief in the Holy Trinity came into being during Jesus Christs Resurrection, but isnt it obvious and clearly defined in Jesus life all along the way? Each one necessitates the other. So, going back to our roles in our lives, especially for us OFWs, we have to understand that our family, work, and community must go well together. Balance and proper attention on these responsibilities is required. We have to share this understanding also to the people in this sphere so that they may know how we value them. These things make us worthy individuals, worthy in the eyes of God and of Man. May the Holy Trinity always be with us all.

Nakaugalian na ng batang si Gian na sa tuwing sasapit ang tag-araw, siya ay pumupunta sa patio ng lumang simbahan upang doon magpalipad ng kanyang paboritong saranggola. Minsan, isinama ni Gian ang kanyang kapatid na si Katkat sa paglalaro ng saranggola. Habang papataas ng papataas ang saranggola, nag-iiigtad at tuwang-tuwang pinagmamasdan ni Katkat ang matayog na saranggola... hanggang sa hindi na ito maabot ng tanaw. Napatigil si Katkat sa pag-igtad at napatingin sa kanyang kuya. Paano mo nalalaman na may saranggola pa sa taas kahit hindi mo na ito nakikita? tanong ng batang babae. Sumagot si Gian, Hindi ko nga kita, pero nararamdaman ko ang paghila nito sa mahabang pisi na hawak-hawak ko. Hindi nakikita, pero nararamdaman. Sa pagdiriwang natin ngayon ng Dakilang Kapistahan ng Banal na Isangtatlo, ipinapaalala sa atin na mayroon tayong iisang Diyos na hindi nakikita, pero nararamdaman. Bagaman hindi natin siya nakikita, sa kaibuturan ng puso at sa sukdulan ng lahat ng katanungan ng tao, makikita at matatagpuan natin ang nag-iisang kasagutan: sa langit at sa lupay walang ibang diyos liban sa Panginoon (Dt 4:39). Ang pagdiriwang ng dakilang kapistahan na ito ay mainam na ipagdiwang matapos ang panahon ng Pagkabuhay sapagkat ang pananampalataya natin sa Banal na Isangtatlo ay naka-ugat sa pagkabuhay ng ating Panginoong Jesu-Kristo. Ang Nabuhay na si Kristo mismo, ayon sa salaysay ni Mateo, ang nagbunyag sa atin ng katotohanan ukol sa Diyos na may iisang ngalan subalit Ama, Anak at Espiritu Santo (Mt 28:19). Hindi nakikita. Krus. Ang Ama ay hindi nagpabaya, at ang Espiritu ng Pag-ibig ang namayani. Ito ay pinatutunayan sa atin ng mga sulat ni San Pablo, ang hinirang na apostol ng Nabuhay na Panginoon. Sa pagkamatay at pagkabuhay ni Jesus, ang Diyos Ama na muling bumuhay kay Jesus (Gal 1:1) ay hindi lamang nagsugo sa kanyang sariling Anak sa anyo ng taong makasalanan (Rom 8:3). Binuhay niya ang kanyang Anak at pinagkalooban niya tayo ng Espiritu ng kanyang Anak nang tayoy makatawag sa kanya ng Ama! Ama ko! (Gal 4:6). Ito ang pagkilos na naganap sa likod ng Krus at Pagkabuhay, ang pagkilos ng Banal na Isangtatlo nang dahil sa pag-ibig ng Diyos sa sangkatauhan. Ginawa ito upang muli tayong makabalik sa Ama at ituring tayo na mga anak ng Diyos. Ginawa ito upang patunayan sa atin ang tunay nating dignidad at pagkatao. Sabi nga ni Papa Benito XVI, Ang Diyos ay hindi pag-iisa, bagkus ganap na pagkakaisa. Dahil dito, ang tao na nilikha ayon sa larawan ng Diyos ay nagiging ganap sa pamamagitan ng pag-ibig, ang lubos na pagbibigay ng sarili. Nararamdaman. Ang Diyos na hindi nakikita subalit nararamdaman ay nagpakita sa atin sa katauhan ni Jesu-Kristo, ang Anak ng Diyos (bas. 1 Tes 1:10). At sa pagbabalik ng Anak sa Ama, nagbitiw siya sa atin ng pangako: Tandaan ninyo: akoy laging kasama ninyo hanggang sa katapusan ng sanlibutan (Mt 28:20). Ito ay pangako na tulad ng isang matayog na saranggola ang Diyos ay kasama natin at nagtuturo sa atin sa tamang daan sa tuwing mahigpit tayong kumakapit sa kanya. Sa Krus, hindi tayo pinabayaan ng Banal na Isangtatlo; ngayon, hindi rin tayo pababayaan ng Diyos. Now there are officially 103 Korean Saints. Only last month, we sent to Rome the dossier of 5 more future blessed and saints. Korea is indeed a special place, a fertile ground for the faith, the seed of Christianity grew in good soil and we are thankful to God, in 1955 there were only 150,000 catholics in Korea, in 1965, the number grew to 500,000 catholics, and now in 2009, we are over 5,000,000, again the gift of Pentecost and we are thankful to God. Now there are over 4500 priests those includes few who are political activists. It has a couple of hundreds of missionaries abroad.

stand the meaning of their lives. They were still afraid to suffer and die, but that became secondary to throwing open the door, going out and proclaiming the Gospel. And the Acts of the Apostles tells us that three thousand people heard them, and caught their fire and their enthusiasm. Together the first Christians at Pentecost Sunday, formed the Body of Christ, the Church. Reality was completely changed by the Fire of the Lord, by the Holy Spirit.

That is what Pentecost was. That is what Pentecost did to the world. That is what Pentecost does or should do to us. It fills us with enthusiasm for the man who died and rose again. It fills us with the fullness of the Love that Jesus taught.

How could it be possible that those common everyday men, those disciples, the fishermen, many of whom probably could not even I am giving this history and figures, because in the Philippines we read, how could it be possible that they could begin a movement of say, to ourselves we are proud and thankful to God for our faith in the love that would embrace the world? Today there are over a billion Philippines, we can boast with spiritual pride, as the one of the 2 catholics in the world. The fire of the Lord consumed them and concatholic countries in Asia (the other is East Timor) our history tells us sumed all around them. The love of God consumed them all. that our faith arrived 450 years ago. And now with our pride, we should also ask ourselves, where have we been all these 450 years? Where is our faith in our lives, where are our catholics, where are our The Gift of Pentecost is that we hold our Savior within us and are priests, where are our bishops, where has the church in the Philipfilled with the Reality that changes our lives. It is the reality of the pines leaning. We Filipinos been, all these 450 years in relation to Message of Jesus. We are determined to do everything possible to faith in our country, and in relation to our Mission to go out and nurture that Reality, to protect that Reality, to allow the world to expreach the gospel? What have we done with our faith to teach, to preach and to live the Mystery of Jesus. Faith is not some academic perience the wonder of our faith, a God who became man, who died, who rose from the dead, and will one day brings us to Him. Jesus is or historical, Pope Benedict XVI said that faith is an encounter, a the Reality. Jesus lives! The fire that is within us is His Spirit, the Holy personal encounter with Jesus of Nazareth. Spirit. I am grateful for the Filipino priests concelebrating today, our presence in Korea is indeed another faith-awakening experience. We witness the presence of the Holy Spirit in the lives of our Filipino migrants, we know the depth of their faith, and we also learn as priests, that faith has to be cultivated and nurtured by the good word, the good example, the life of faith, hope and love.

The Gospel of John relates the Pentecost experience in a simple and moving manner, quite different than the scene in Acts. In John, Jesus appears to the disciples in the same Upper Room and pronounces peace, Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you. And when He said this He breathed on them and said to them, Receive the Holy Spirit, whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retained are retained.

I am bringing out these topics because, today is Pentecost Sunday, it is considered the birthday of the Church on Pentecost Sunday, Pentecost means fifty, that is fifty days after the resurrection of Jesus, the Peace comes through the forgiveness of sins. The church is empowered to forgive sins. The church is empowered by the Holy Spirit to Holy Spirit came upon the Apostles. impart peace. The fire that consumes us is the fire that forgives our sins, the fire of peace. The Holy Spirit came upon them on Pentecost Sunday. They were Jesus closest followers, his closest disciples. Most of these people had deserted Jesus when he was arrested. They were panic struck. They had seen their master essentially tortured to death. How could they avoid a similar fate? Peter denied him three times. And yet, there was the truth about Jesus they could not deny. They were in turmoil. They could not understand why this happened to the Man they believed in and adored. The resurrection of Jesus intensified their turmoil. They did not grasp the meaning of the resurrection. Is he a ghost? They kept their doors locked because they were afraid. They were afraid of a ghost, they were also afraid of the soldiers.

There has been a birth and a change in reality. It is the birth of the Church. We are full of such joy that we cannot hold ourselves back. We have to proclaim to the world with our lives that Love is conquering all. Jesus lives. His fire inflames us.

We have all received the same gifts and mission of the Spirit. Today and every day is Pentecost. We need the knowledge to discern Gods will for us, we need the courage and the strength to persevere and keep faith in our daily lives..

And then the Holy Spirit filled the Upper Room where they had gathered, the same Upper Room where they celebrated the Passover and received the Body of the Lord and His Blood, the Blood of the New Covenant. The Holy Spirit did not just fill the room, it filled them, it filled the hearts of the Disciples of Jesus. And then, they were on fire for Jesus. They began to understand the mystery of Christ. They began to understand the meaning of his death. They began to under-

I pray to God that we all get the strength to be faithful to Him, to be examples of the values of faith and work. St. Paul says that the wisdom of God is wiser than human knowledge and the strength of God is stronger than human strength. We pray to God, everyday in our lives to give us the wisdom to discern His will for us, and the strength to endure, because God is our strength. Amen.

Bro. Allan Rodriguez At home" Tony told me, "I am a kind of God. My wife gets very insecure if I am away too long. She and my children depend on me for food, clothing, money for schooling, recreation, almost everything. I am sometimes frightened by my own importance and shutter to think what would become of them if anything happened to me. "With the community around it is different." He added, "I am involved in the committee preparing for the Fiesta - I keep the books in order and I am part of our Bible sharing Group. I enjoy having a few drinks with my friends. They need me and I need them, but I could survive without them and they without me. "It is different again in the Bank in which I work. I am a cog in a wheel. I carry out duties and fulfill roles that I had no part in designing. I am powerless there and yet it is from there my power comes. If it were not for my job I could not support my family. The analogy of Tony's relationship with his family, his work, and with the community in-between has its value but is also confusing, like the mystery that it is trying to clarify. Is the workplace the center with the family on the outside, or is the family the center with the work on the outside? God's center is everywhere but his periphery is nowhere! In today's feast we are asked to appreciate the different modes of God's being, modes that we relate to by different ways of prayer. Our relationship with the Father God is generally mediated through our words and rituals. We try to hear and respond to the Son God mediated to us through the world around us. When we meditate we try to Be with the Spirit God in un-mediated stillness.

Sometimes, I know that my involvement in the community, and even in church, is an escape from pressures at home. It is really hard to keep them all in balance."

Today we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Trinity and maybe Tony's story can help us to get a little bit of a handle on this mystery. In the old Testament we are told that we are made in the image of God and by the time the New Testament was written down the revelation of the Trinity - a God who is one, yet, Father, Son and Holy Spirit - had become clear. In today's Gospel Jesus sends the disciples out to baptize, "in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit." The more we discover about God, the greater becomes the mystery of God's presence and love. Mystery means that we can never say the final word about God: there is always more to discover and to experience. Each year as we celebrate the feast of the Holy Trinity we get to grasp some new aspects of the reality that is God. In the story of Tony we get some few very inadequate ideas about the God in whose image we are made. Tony felt himself to be important, a creator and a provider, at home. He felt in a way that he was a kind of God for his family and maybe in just the same way we say that God is Father for us. So too, Tony interacted with his neighbors. It was a relationship of equality in which people took different roles. God is also incarnate and amongst us as a brother and an equal. We find him in listening to and responding to one another. Finally, in his workplace Tony felt himself powerless and at the same time it was from there he gained all of his power. So too, we can all at times be overcome by our powerlessness and littleness and yet within us there is a power, the power of the Spirit, to which we must be open and responsive.

Arroyo Meets With Filipinos in Seoul

Wearing a bright yellow jacket, Arroyo mingled and chatted with the attendees, even taking photographs with some eager fans. Several members of Arroyo's entourage, including Energy Secretary Angelo Reyes, even hit the stage for an impromptu song number, eliciting cheers from the audience. The Philippine embassy had originally organized a One Philippines festival at Seoul Plaza, near City Hall, over the weekend, but it was postponed to June 27-28, out of respect for the death of former President Roh Moo-hyun.

Philippine President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo took time out of her busy schedule during her state visit to Seoul over the weekend to meet with members of the Filipino community. Around 300 Filipinos, who live and work in Korea, attended a meeting with Arroyo at the Lotte Hotel, downtown Seoul, Sunday morning. Prior to the meeting, a special mass was officiated by the Papal Nuncio to Korea Osvaldo Padilla, who is also from the Philippines. In a speech, Arroyo thanked the Filipino workers for their remittances, which helped boost the country's economy along with the government's economic reforms.
