2.What is the primary research question or thesis of this article?

The article explores the effects of power language as it correlates with

English-Spanish asymmetry.

3.What are the characteristics of the population studied? How many

people, ages, genders, race/ethnicity/nationality, professions, etc.?
How were these people selected?

The population studied was the Latino population existing in territories that were
acquired from US imperialism and immigrants from neighboring Latin American
countries. The study included citizens and immigrants originating from Cuba, Mexico,
Puerto Rico, but not exclusive to members of the other Latino nationalities. The
population was selected based on the historical coloniality relationship between the US
and each Latino American population.

4.What research method(s) was employed by the researchers? Was this

appropriate for the population and the research question? Were there
limitations to this method?

The research method used was the US Census data, and statistical information on the
marginalization of the Spanish-Speaking population. These methods were appropriate for
the research question because it provides data reliable and valid for their study.

5.What were the primary findings of the research?

The researchers found that the rise of Spanish-language influence on the English-Spanish
asymmetry does little to establish dominance over the English hegemony in the U.S. The
findings suggest that there are three factors relative to the security of the English-
hegemony: the global hegemony of English, strong social norms, and social movements
that resist a rise in the status of Spanish. Although the increase in the Latino population
has become one of the pertinent political issues; lack of participation in the political arena
and deficit of Spanish influence in various institutions of U.S. society does little to
facilitate the dominance of the Spanish language.

or other elements of the research project.

English-Spanish asymmetry in U.S. Society. The background
information and clear definition of thesis studied. The findings could
have further examined the depth in which institutions used to facilitate
the promotion of the Spanish-language actually weakens it.
