Pakistani national ailing with Parkinson's disease treated successfully at Apollo Hospital
Man cured in Apollo Specialty Hospital Chennai after being diagnosed with Parkinsonism in Pakistan many years ago. Despite extensive treatment, his condition had been deteriorating with severe disability in walking and stiffness even on high doses of medication. Chennai, Tamil Nadu, February 24, 2010 /India PRwire/ -- Neuro Specialists at Apollo Speciality Hospital, Chennai reported that their first Patient from Pakistan, Mr. Mohd Arif ailing with Parkinson's disease was treated successfully using the 'Deep Brain Stimulation' (DBS) Procedure. Speaking about the innovative procedure, the treating team of Neuro Specialists at Apollo Speciality Hospital, Chennai including Dr. R Ramnarayan, Consultant Neuro Surgeon, Dr. Yogaraj, Consultant Neurologist, Dr. Arul Selvan, Consultant Neurologist and Dr. Chendil Nathan, Consultant Neuro Surgeon said, " The patient was diagnosed with Parkinsonism in Pakistan many years ago and despite extensive treatment, his condition had been deteriorating with severe disability in walking and stiffness even on high doses of medication. His sleep was severely affected & appetite had become deranged and he had lost urinary control. This situation made him a candidate for surgical treatment offered for Parkinsonism, which is subthalamic nucleus (STN) Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS). After DBS Surgery, Mr. Arif has experienced tremendous reduction in body stiffness and is even able to walk up the stair case. He also feels to have got back his normal

appetite, better sleep & has gained good urinary control. His anger has also come down significantly. The team at Apollo Speciality Hospital, Chennai have performed DBS implants on 4 patients since August 2009.The team consists of Neurologist and Neurosurgeon with the surgical support personnel. Elaborating on the disease, the team of Neuro Specialists at Apollo Speciality Hospital, Chennai highlighted the facts that the commonest movement disorder is Parkinson's disease, which manifests with tremors, rigidity, slow movement (bradykinesia), poor balance, and difficulty in walking. Parkinson's disease is a progressive degenerative diseas Parkinson's affects 1 - 2% of people above 60 yrs but in India it is seen in younger people also (upto 15%). Treatment of movement disorders like Parkinsonism are predominantly by drugs and are very effective in most cases. But a good number of patients either come out of good control in the long term or develop side effects of drugs especially if after 5-6 years of treatment. Such patients are surgical candidates. The surgical treatment offered for Parkinsonism is subthalamic nucleus (STN) deep brain stimulation (DBS). Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) is a complex procedure, which involves inserting an electrode into the STN (deep in the brain) done under local anaesthesia, where the main focus is on patient safety and adherence to a patented algorithm. This treatment is based on the premise that high frequency stimulation of the sub-thalamic nucleus (STN), deep in the brain, alleviates symptoms of Parkinson's disease. Stimulating electrodes are implanted in the STN using stereotactic neurosurgical navigation, supported by intra-operative neurophysiological monitoring. The electrodes are connected to a battery operated pulse generator, fixed under the skin (none of them are visible from the outside). The implanted pulse generator is programmed, from the outside, for optimal stimulation of the STN. Programme parameters can be adjusted using an external programmer. The device can be switched on/off by the external programmer. Protocol beginnings from imaging to implantation, the steps of which are standard across all centres adapting the process, are followed rigidly. These Procedures are highly technical, sophisticated, elaborate & required extensive training. The DBS Procedure is done in India at about one- fourth the cost as against the western countries with more than comparable results.
