At least 50 people have been killed relating to Hurricane Irene in 13 states.

The storm, which ravaged the entire east coast, has left an estimated $7.6 billion in damage and almost 8 million homes and businesses without power. Irene made landfall on North Carolina just after dawn on Saturday, as a Category 1 storm with winds of 85mph. No one was immune, says New Jersey state climatologist David Robinson. The storm continued its path up the Atlantic, causing damage in eleven states: North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Vermont. North Carolina faced the brunt of the storm, especially the Outer Banks, a popular vacation destination that would have thousands of visitors at the time of the storm. Irene produced waves of 6-9 feet hours before landfall on the coast of the Outer Banks and rainfall ranging from 10-14 inches. There were multiple flooded areas in the state and at least ten people killed due to the storm. North of the Carolinas, the other states felt wind gusts up to 70 miles per hour. Millions lost power but It could have been a lot worse, said Bridget Shelton, a spokeswoman for Delmarva Power, a unit of Pepco Holdings Inc. In Maryland, Governor Martin OMalley said there was little damage in Ocean City, a popular vacation spot where thousands were evacuated before the storm. The beach looks good in Ocean City, OMalley said in a video. There has not been much damage to the boardwalk to speak of. Even after Irene was downgraded, its damage was still felt in the states. In Foxborough, Mass., about 90% of the towns 7,820 National Grid customers were still without power on Tuesday afternoon. Gillette Stadiums power went on in enough time for the Thursday evening exhibition game for the New England Patriots. This brought complaints from customers, but National Grid denied that the football team received special treatment. Julie Marlow of Towson, Md., has been told empty promises by her power company, Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative. "Don't tell me that it will be restored by a certain time and then let that time go by. Tell me a later date and get it back on earlier and I'll be impressed," Marlow said. President Obama declared a state of emergency for 11 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. This declaration allows states to receive federal money and support responding to damage, according to the Federal Emergency Management Agencys website.

Puerto Rico was the only place labeled a major disaster area. Hurricane Katia, a category 3 is due to hit the East Coast by the end of this week.
