The contract includes ESMs commitment to provide quality individual, family and group therapy, behavioral and nursing services to people who reside in Macombs southwest quadrant. Its newest service facility is located at 6900 E. Ten Mile Road in Center Line, Michigan and will open in September. This is an exciting opportunity for both Easter Seals and Macomb County residents who will benet from our extraordinary, best- practice services, says ESM President and CEO Brent Wirth. We received the contract based on the merit of our past and current successes in other Michigan counties with the goal to achieve the same desired outcomes in Macomb. ESM is the leading provider of behavioral health services, offering an array of comprehensive programs and therapies to support the recovery of children and adults with disabilities, serious mental illness or co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders. Its staff members are skilled in Person-Centered Planning (PCP) processes, which are used to identify each individuals dreams, desires, needs, abilities and preferences to determine what services and supports will best meet their needs and wants. PCP includes recognizing and addressing health and safety needs as well. Easter Seals physically left Macomb because of budget restraints, however, it continued to provide out-of-county support to MCCMHS. Services offered by ESM are facilitated by a multi-disciplinary team of licensed and/or registered behavioral health professionals, including psychiatrists, therapists, case managers and nurses. In addition to PCP processes, ESM also utilizes Evidence-Based Practices (EBP) to serve people with disabilities, mental illness and other special needs. Evidence-Based Practices combine the best research ndings, clinical expertise and individual values to determine a persons optimal treatment plan, explains Wirth. This approach is important to the people we serve because it enables us to offer them the most current and meaningful behavioral health solutions with proven results. ESM currently manages operations at multiple sites, serving nearly 9,000 children and adults annually. Shriver Joins ESM Board E aster Seals Michigan has appointed RPT Performance Solutions President Ron Shriver to its board of directors. Its a real privilege to work side-by-side with the talented men and women who make up Easter Seals Michigans board membership, says Shriver. While our industry backgrounds may differ, we are united by a mutual commitment to support Easter Seals in its ongoing campaign to help individuals with disabilities achieve their goals and dreams. Shrivers three-year term on Easter Seals board is up for renewal in June, 2014. Ron Shriver NEWS & NOTES W hen youre Easter Seals Michigan, and the leading behavioral health service provider in Oakland County, its only logical that the physical well-being of the people you serve is a top priority as well. In July, 2010, Easter Seals demonstrated its commitment to the holistic recovery and care of the people it supports by collaborating with Health Centers of Detroit Medical Group (HCD) to open an onsite medical treatment facility at its Adult Behavioral Health Service Center in Southeld. One of our goals as an agency is to stay current with evolving best practices in the treatment of people with mental illness, explains Easter Seals Michigan President and CEO Brent Wirth. For example, the average life expectancy of people with mental illness is 55, 20 years less than people without a mental illness. Dedicated behavioral and medical organizations like Easter Seals and HCD are responding to this issue by forming valuable partnerships that integrate both physical and behavioral care. Since opening the doors to the satellite Federally Qualied Health Center Look-Alike, 300 people receiving Easter Seals behavioral health services have also sought medical treatment from the centers primary physician, Shyran J. Hines, M.D. When I initially heard about the collaboration, my thoughts were that someone nally understands that the mind and the body are one; if a person is to be completely healthy both their mind and body must function properly, explains Dr. Hines. Some of the most common health disparities that we see among patients with severe mental illness, like diabetes, hypertension and hyperlipidemia are no longer being ignored, adds Dr. Hines. As a result, patients are healthier. Patients whom never had a primary care physician before, now have one, which has decreased the number of unnecessary emergency room and urgent care visits. While behavioral health services at the center are currently available to adults, children and families participating in Easter Seals programs only, future plans include expanding behavioral treatment for the general public as well. The program provides services for mentally ill and developmentally disabled incarcerated individuals. The JAWS program benets everyone in Oakland County by providing effective treatment to individuals who need it which results in reductions and prevention of incarceration, explains Sheriff Bouchard. I am very proud of this team who work so diligently to provide solutions to real problems. In 2010, 295 inmates, (121 women and 174 men) were placed in the JAWS program, with a total of 224 success stories. Old Location New Location Family Services South is moving! A Mothers Thank You I n December of 2010, my husband retired and we moved our family from California to Michigan. We have three adopted children with special needs. Our daughter, Marissa, was born with TAR Syndrome. This means that her forearms are shorter than yours or mine. Over the years, we tried several tricycles and bicycles. She did well as a toddler with a tricycle, but two wheeled bicycles require too much in the way of balance. Once we were in Michigan, I researched what kind of bike would be good for Marissa. On a whim, I placed an add on Craigslist for a used specialty trike. I got a response immediately from a woman in Kalamazoo who told me about Ambucs. I contacted Ambucs and they recommended me to Easter Seals. We made our appointment, Easter Seals took Marissas measurements and by working together Marissas dream of having a trike came true. It has been amazing, and we are grateful! Marissa now receives Occupational Therapy at Easter Seals and is very excited to go every week. We are thrilled! Thank you Easter Seals and Ambucs for working together to provide Marissa with this exciting opportunity. Linda Q. M arissa and her brother, Reuben, are training to participate in Special Olympics Biking competitions for the September 2011 Games in Chelsea, MI. Before the big competition on September 10th, Marissa and Reuben will compete in smaller events in Grayling and at an invitational competition in Flint. SUCCESS STORY Team Owens Fight! Marissa Q.
