THIS IS HUMBLING
Refurbished monument to honor all Manistee County veterans
By DAVID L. BARBER
Managing Editor
Pride and patriotism were the fashion of the day. Salutes were crisp and with meaning. Old uniforms were taken out of mothball, shaken out and worn with honor and humility. Last weeks rededication of the Veterans Memorial monument in Manistee was guided by an All American spirit a red, white and blue generation-bonding soul that defines who we are, where were at and where were going. This is humbling, retired doctor George Wagoner of Manistee said softly, almost whispering as he stood within arms reach of the monument, itself. A former Naval officer who served nearly 40 years ago, Wagoner wore his dress white uniform to Saturdays ceremony. Humbling, he whispered again.

the big city tell me they wish their community would do the same. They respect and appreciate the way we remember and honor our veterans here in Manistee County. In the past five or six years or so, our Memorial Day service has grown to become very special, and the additions of these black tablets bearing the names of our service men and women are going to make our Memorial Day ceremonies all the more special in the future. As he stood in front of the large crowd Saturday, Mack pointed at the monument just behind him. This memorial is a tribute to all those who have served our country, he said. (But) it is just one part of the plans to add to its significance and beauty, and after its competition it will be a place in our community that will be visited for generations.
our the list of our honored veterans grows. Gancarz said those who would like to have their name engraved onto the monument, or the name of a loved one, need only contact officials at Oak Grove Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Manistee. Jim Kieszkowski and his crew have done a magnificent job with the new stone tablets and their etchings, Gancarz said. Hes put a tremendous amount of work into this and well forever appreciate it. During the ceremony the names of 163 residents from Manistee County who were killed in war 162 military and one civilian were read, during which a bell was rung after each name was read. The wars included the Civil War, Spanish-American, World War I, World War I, Korea and Vietnam. The lone civilian, Steve Hulett, was killed in 2004 when he worked as a civilian truck driver supporting U.S. troops in Iraq.
The Fair Board Wishes to Thank All of the Manistee County Fair Supporters, Sponsors, Exhibitors, Merchants, Volunteers and Attendees. Thanks to The Ideal Kitchen for Sponsoring the Pie Baking Contest and to Unique Motor Sports for Bringing the Pinewood Derby. Without You, We Wouldnt Have Been Able to Mark 125 Great Years! THANK YOU! See You Next Year!
