passage.
Every year, rvhenever the month of ir4ay makes its debut, sons and daughlers allaround thc rvorld would be thinking of r.vhat they co*!d do this year for Mother's Day. The media, cake houses and shopping centres take part actively reminding us of this special day. The question thal we probably do not ask is how did it come about?
The earliest Mother's Day celebrations were dated way back to the 1600's in England. All servants would be given a day off every 'h4othering Sunday' and encouraged to return home and spend thc day u'ith their mothers. A special cake, callcd the Molhering Cake, was olten taken along. In the United States, Mother's Day rvas originally suggested by Julia Ward Horve back in lB72 as arvay of honouring allmothcrs. Iler dream of seiling aside a special day to honour mothers hnally becamc a reality in 1907 through Anna Jarvis, who is considered the founder of Mother's Day'

It rvas Jarvis who initiated the custont ol giving molhers carnations' White carnations were for mothers who had passed away, tvhile pink carnations were given to mothers who were still living. Finally, in Ivlay
1914, President Woodrow Wilson made lvlother's Day a national holiday. Ile also started the Mother's Day tradition of displaying the Unitecl States flag to represent the public's expression of love for all mothers of the

ntothers arc showered rvith 30 tokens ol appreciation front their families. Some mothers are given gifts such as
flowers, sweets, meals and cards.
In France, Molher's Day is celebrated on the last Sunday in lv{ay. It is a family holiday in France. The family gathers to eat a large meal and at the end of the celebration, all the mothers in the family receive a special cake that looks like a bouquet of flowers. I* Spain, N4other's Day is celcbrated on I)ecember 8tn atrd it is looked upon as a religious holiday.
In this day and age, Mother's Day can prove to be rather daunting for some as we either run out of ideas on how to treat our mothers or are simply not sure of how to shol our iove and appreciation. Here are some tips on how to celebrate the day itselll One of the best ways is simply to give your Mum the day olf, Let her take it easy and rela,r rvhile the rest of the family does the rvork. You r.vill be amazed at the amount ol'work your mother has to do! You could also prepare your tnothet''s favourite

breakfast. Make sure the food is ananged nicely on a tray and don't forget to include some fresh flowers, preferably her favourite kind. Do remember to include a present, too!
Another suggestion is to take your Mum to dinner at her favourite restaurant. Whatever you have in mind, let her know that her wisdom love and sacrifices are greatly appreciated. We are always taking things for gxanted and if it wasn't for our Mums, we would not be here today.
