essential SUNSHINE COAST

CONTENTS
Here on the Sunshine Coast, we can throw a festival like nobodys business. Barely a month goes by without some massive celebration or another. In the next fortnight alone we have two inaugural events devoted to all things decadent and delicious the Real Food Festival at Maleny from September 10-11 (realfoodfestival.com.au) and the Culture Shock Food Festival at Maroochydore from September 16-18 (cultureshocksunshinecoast.com.au), both of which Quest Newspapers Sunshine Coast is proud to sponsor. But, while I cant wait to eat (OK gorge) my way through this pair, the event thats really caught my attention is the fifth annual Caloundra Musical Festival, which runs from October 7-9 and which were also proud to sponsor. You see, Icehouse is one of this years headline acts, and since they were the first concert I went to way back when, it feels a bit like a musical journey thats come full circle. And thats before you factor in fellow musos such as Empire of the Sun, Eskimo Joe, Missy Higgins and Tex Perkins. Read more on the next page and, in the meantime, enjoy your stay on our glorious Coast.

Thirsty Merc

Eskimo Joe

Missy Higgins

THE MUSIC Festival director Richie Eyles and his team have always prided themselves on compiling an ecletic line-up of artists and this year is no different. Across three days and multiple stages fans can see everyone from Empire of the Sun, Eskimo Joe, Missy Higgins and the Baby Animals to Thirsty Merc, and Tex Perkins and The Dark Horses. Theyll be joined by veteran Australian act Icehouse, led by Iva Davies (pictured), which is touring to celebrate the release of greatest hits album White Heat. Plus, dont forget to check out local Coast musos, including the band PocketLove, which won the grand final of the Original Selection competition, giving them a slot to play on the main stage.

THE VILLAGE OF DIVERSITY This activity runs across the Saturday and Sunday of the festival and celebrates local culture with live entertainment, workshops in everything from drumming to belly dancing, street performances, and plenty of food and market stalls. Theres also school performances, a parade of funky and magical performers, entertainers and visitors, a story telling tent and art on display. Other Village highlights include a childrens festival with puppet shows, clowns, kitemaking and more and a beachside carnival complete with rides, stalls and sideshows. FUNKY FOREST With a firm focus on families, children are always welcome

at the festival, and the forest is especially designed to keep them entertained. As well as a creche service for parents, there will be food galore, a market, free face painting, jumping castles, craft workshops including the Sand Wizard and lots more. Also check out the Breakstage, where talent will include local act The Roshambas, who were runners up in the Original Selection comp. BULCOCK BUSKING FESTIVAL The inaugural festival will add a touch of song to Bulcock St and Bulcock Beach during the event, with 36 buskers each performing twice over the three days of the festival. For locations see the official CMF website. Winners will get a Sunday slot at the festival.

GLEE COMPETITION In the first year of this competition, 16 schools from across Australia will showcase their Glee Club talents live. Competing for $10,000 worth of prizes the ensembles will present a feast of choreographed dance moves, costumes and fresh takes on popular musical numbers, as the television show of the same name has become famous for. To check out some of the schools that entered, visit youtube.com/ cmfglee Caloundra Music Festival, sponsored by Quest Sunshine Coast, is October 7-9. FISHING

CAST A LINE
There are plenty of top spots right along the Coast to catch a feed or catch and release

Bob Jeynes from Davos Compleat Angler at Noosaville says spring is a great time to cast a line. He says better-size tailor, including greenbacks, are about in a few more numbers. Offshore, seek out larger snapper on the reef with coral trout also on the bite, rising in numbers through to Christmas. Also look for pelagic species, hopefully including a few spotted and Spanish mackerel. In the river systems, there are good flathead plus mangrove jack in early to late spring. Mud crabs are also on the move through the river system in the warmer months. Steve Dingle from Kawana Tackleworld says to try the shallow sandflats or weed beds with little
26 essential SUNSHINE COAST

drops-offs running through them. He says as we come into the spawning and breeding season for flathead and whiting they will be the main species to target during the next few months. Try closer to the river entrances rather than the upper reaches, using bait such as live yabbies, sand worms or prawns, or lures such as surface poppers for whiting and soft plastics for flathead. Emma Sestro from Caloundra Fishing World says catches of choice heading into the warmer months of the year include whiting and flathead. The sandflats along Golden Beach will usually turn up good numbers and you can walk the whole area quite easily during the run-out tide.

Emma says anglers can try for female flathead around the Bar entrance using soft plastics, pilchards or live bait such as mullet and herring. The best times to try are at the top or bottom of the tide, when the water is running slower. Lake Currimundi has goodsize trevally and whiting while the canals around Pelican Waters will have queenfish and trevally in the afternoon. Mangrove jack will be around the bridges and mangroves as the temperature climbs. Emma says offshore, the snapper will make a late run into November, along with grassy sweetlip and pearl peach. The focus then turns to mackerel and tuna as the warmer

water species start to appear in our local waters. * Davos Compleat Angler, cnr Thomas/Mary Sts, Noosaville, fishingnoosa.com.au, 5449 8099; * Kawana Tackleworld, 8 Nicklin Way, Minyama, 5444 0714, tackleworld.com.au * Caloundra Fishing World, 126 Bulcock St, 5491 4566, caloundrafishingworld.com.au For more Coast leisure ideas, grab your Journal paper or weekender magazine, delivered free each Friday. INDULGE YOURSELF
Julie Shelton is the co-organiser of the Real Food Festival in Maleny and the hinterland from September 10-11. We wanted to know more ... WORDS LISA CHANT
Are you a lifelong foodie? We always grew food in our back yard, Dad took us fishing as kids and, from about 12, I cooked a few meals each week for the family. Ive travelled a bit and have a good appreciation of food from other cultures. Then I got interested in permaculture in the early 90s and had my eyes opened to the impact of humans on the earth. In 1999 I started an organic farm with my partner and, when our son was born five years later, I became especially concerned about the quality of our food. Now, as Im getting older, Im even more interested in how it affects health and longevity. Have you always been passionate about real and organic food? When we started our farm, we set about producing the best possible food. That took us on a journey of exploration what was the best possible food and how could we produce it within the scope of our farm and climate? In a world that is geared up to view food as a commodity, where price is the primary consideration, its good to remember food should be about nourishment and pleasure. My definition of real food is that is has been produced with minimal, if any, chemical inputs and hasnt been overly-processed. Importantly, it has a pleasing flavour and feel. What inspired you to organise the Real Food Festival? A few years ago I was awarded a Churchill Fellowship to look at the compliance burden faced by smallscale food producers. I travelled to seven countries and fell in love with the international Slow Food movement, which says food needs to be good, clean and fair. On my return, I started Slow Food Sunshine Coast Hinterland and began talking to the public about these issues.

Meanwhile, through my work with food producers and restaurateurs, I realised both ends of the food chain were also interested in food quality and the re-localisation of our food system. It became obvious what we needed was to bring everyone together to celebrate the food chain. What will the weekend involve? The Saturday is about getting involved rolling up your sleeves and participating in a workshop or cooking class, visiting a farmers market, learning about building a cob oven, seeing edible school gardens, going on a farm tour ... there are lots of options. Then, on Sunday, were gathering at Maleny Showgrounds for a day of celebration with something for everyone cooking demos, kids activities, talks, more than 70 stalls, food movies, cookbooks,

farm animals, tastings, primary producers, health/wellness advice, gourmet food, wine and more. What do you hope people take away from the event? Apart from all the delicious food and other goodies theyll buy, we hope visitors will leave knowing at least a little bit more about the food they eat and being more aware of the issues surrounding food from paddock to plate. The Real Food Festival is sponsored by the weekender. Visit realfoodfestival.com.au To learn more about the Sunshine Coasts wealth of food producers, growers, farmers, manufacturers, retailers and more, check out the Seasons of the Sun website at seasonsofthesun.com.au

Happy feet
There are no rules this season, except that colour is everywhere. Start at your toes and work your way up. Choose pretty ballets flats, jelly sandals and flip flops for daytime in neon orange, fluoro pink and lemon sorbet. Wear them with an all-white outfit for a pop of colour and the element of surprise on your tootsies. For night time, invest in sky-high coloured pumps or wedges for a touch of on-trend class. Seductive red, hot pink and deep lilac are the colours du jour. And the bonus? Catching a glimpse southwards at your tinted rockin footwear will bring a smile to your dial.

to tHe max
If there was ever a key piece this spring summer, its the maxi be it a skirt or dress. These floor-skimming garments in brightly coloured and patterned fabrics will see you through the warmer months. Not only are they airy and breezy to wear, they also look amazingly feminine. Wear a vibrant red maxi skirt with a tan bodysuit for an instant, casually elegant look. Or team with a crisp white collared shirt under a mustard yellow cardi for the office. In block colours or pretty patterns, maxi dresses are the perfect spring staple for your wardrobe. Team with flats for a

thrown-on beach babe look. Or, for the utmost in picnic chic, choose wedges to elongate your look even more and a belt in the dominant colour of the dress, to cinch in your waist and define a womanly shape.

SHady ladieS
Just because youre wearing colour from head to toe, doesnt mean you cant accessorise in bright hues too. Live on the edge this spring and clash your colours. Team a bright green shoulder bag with a red maxi and orange flats. Finish your look with vibrant electric blue jewellery such as a statement cocktail ring. Its just

crazy enough to work while clutch bags in a rainbow of colours will lift any outfit for a night on the town. Vibrant sunglasses are another way to introduce a hit of colour. Wear them on your head, Alex-Perry style, hooked down the front of your top for laidback cool or simply to shield your peepers from the suns rays. However you choose to wear them, colourful sunnies will not only shade you but add a glorious shade to your day.
