2. Outline of the project environment and problem to be solved

Wireless sensor networks have the potential to provide unprecedented remote monitoring capabilities that can benefit applications such as industrial control, environmental monitoring, and defense. Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is one of the most exciting technologies that revolutionize the working practices by increasing efficiencies, and improving profitability. It is often presented as a replacement for today s barcodes, but the technology has much greater possibilities, such as individual serial numbers for each item, and the possibility to read these numbers at a distance of several metres. They are simpler to deploy than wired solutions and these networks will enable improved understanding of processes and environments through continual monitoring of a larger set of parameters. In this project the evolution of wireless sensor networks will be presented, using RFID techniques with examples of implementations in vehicle tracking and ticketing system (VTTS) designed for bus passengers in the college bus. Within the coming years, low cost Radio Frequency IDentification (RFID) systems are expected to become commonplace throughout the Business-toBusiness (B2B) and Business -to- Consumer (B2C) marketplace. The project Vehicle Tracking & Ticketing System (VTTS) mainly deals with identification of vehicles and ticketing the passengers using these vehicles. The project will be implemented with the help of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) Technology. The major area of implementation of this project is for ticketing bus passengers in college bus electronically and obtain identification of buses. The project on implementation will fetch added features like speed in transaction, cost efficiency, low frequency of errors etc. Another added feature will be the accuracy in data recorded. Human errors will be rectified to the maximum thereby enhancing the efficiency of the system. The obsolete system of manual entry and calculation can be removed and this method could be adopted to bring into action a more efficient system. This VTTS application identifies a particular vehicle by the RFID tag fixed on them. In case of passenger boarding or getting down the bus is identified and ticketed on the basis of ID card they posses. The system could be more elaborately established for all vehicles and passengers and a complete digital network could be established with the least of its possible errors. The tags are cost efficient

and the whole equipment once installed can work without any particular attention. The area of application of RFID is very wide and the technology has already proved its value. Thus the implementation and practice of such a digital system would always be worth.

5. Project constraints
1. 2. 3. 4. Resources. Availability of hardware and software resources required Time. Time limitation of the project Cost: Cost of hardware and software could be expensive Quality: Quality of the project.

6. Project approach
Selected project approach for this project will be waterfall model approach to ensure success of the project. In "The Waterfall" approach, the whole process of software development is divided into separate process phases. The phases in Waterfall model are: Requirement Specifications phase, Software Design, Implementation and Testing & Maintenance. All these phases are cascaded to each other so that second phase is started as and when defined set of goals are achieved for first phase and it is signed off, so the name "Waterfall Model". All the methods and processes undertaken in Waterfall Model are more visible.
Before starting to develop and create the artefact I have to study the subject (RFID application and implementation, etc ...) After that, before the implementation of Vehicle Tracking and Ticketing System, I have to create the connection between the terminals and server. Author also needs to have knowledge of Visual basic and programming knowledge of vb.net and PHP

7. Facilities and resources

The resource requirement for the project could be charted under three sections. They are 1. RFID SECTION 2. COMPUTER SECTION 3. SOFTWARES AND DEVELOPMENT TOOLS RFID SECTION This section is mainly focusing on the tools required for tracking the various tags used in the VTTS . They are mainly three categories. 1) RFID tag enabled ID card The tag carries the information about the client and forms the basic input of the system. 2) RFID writer The device used to write the details about the client onto the tag. 3) RFID reader The device used to read the details about the client from the tag. COMPUTER SECTION This section mainly deals with the computer systems required for the implementation of the VTTS . They could be classified as: 1) Computer Terminals The computer systems used for operating the VTTS . 2) LAN connectivity Proper connecting devices between the terminals and server. 3) Computer Server The computer systems used for maintaining the database.

SOFTWARES AND DEVELOPMENT TOOLS This section deals with the various design tools used in system for the purpose of design and implementation. 1) Microsoft Visual Basic Event driven programming language used for designing the interface and connecting the various sections. 2) Microsoft Access Back end software to keep record of the database. 3) Crystal Reports Report generating software for creating reports.

8. Log of risks
1. Security; any un-authorized access to application. 2. Design; A poor design of the system will produce a less flexible application 3. Improper connectivity of server with computer terminals will result in connection failure.
4. Damage in server system will result in data loss.

9. Starting point for research

Research and analyse the existing applications and identify their strengths and weaknesses. Manual Ticketing and vehicle identification was the obsolete method available but the frequency of getting errors and mismatch in entries was a serious problem. Human employment was always over ruled by computers. The factor of fatigue will also be overruled. An interesting area applicable in a similar situation was the BARCODES . But this had the major problem of line of sight that is the coded card had to be taken to the reader to validate an entry. Even though the method is bit less expensive the security that could be offered was very less. The proposed project of implementation of RFID for vehicle identification and ticketing will be executed to overcome the various shortcomings in the existing system. Some of the added features in this system are listed below: Generally, the BARCODE technology uses the line of sight technology. That is, a scanner has to see the bar code to read it, which means people usually have to orient the bar code towards a scanner for it to be read. Radio frequency identification, by contrast, doesnt require line of sight. RFID tags can be read as long as they are within range of a reader. Actually, the RFID uses the low -end of the electromagnetic spectrum. Thus waves coming from readers are not dangerous and are similar to those waves coming from our car radio. Just as our radio tunes into different frequency to hear different channels, RFID tags and readers are tuned to the same frequency to communicate. Radio waves travel through most non -metallic materials, so they can be embedded in packaging or encased in protective plastic for weatherproofing and greater durability.

Breakdown of tasks

I will be following the system development life cycle (SDLC) for the development of this site

The system development lifecycle is a methodology or series of steps on building specific software to describe, it is a conceptual method used in project management. SDLC has different models; most of the models observe the following stages to ensure their software is a success. 1. Feasibility Study In this phase, i will define the definition of business problem and scope objectives. I will outline the details of the project schedule and analyse the requirements and i will conduct a study how this software will affect the end users. The theoretical plan of the software will be created in this stage 2. System Analysis and Requirements Once the required software will be determined, it will be time to determine the technical requirements in building the software. In this stage, work flow will be created that will be the basis of the actual design. 3. Systems Design This stage is to convert the requirement specification produced in the requirement analysis phase into a structure which is suitable for implementation in some programming language, here, overall software architecture will be defined, and the product design and detailed design work will be performed. 4. System Implementation Once the three different types of designs are completed, it will be time to put place them together. This stage becomes an important phase of the project since it will be the first time that bugs and errors in the system are determined. During this stage, different type of errors will be determined. 5. Integration and testing Once the software is completed, it will go through serious testing before integration to the actual working environment. I will test the software capability for simultaneous and multiple users. Bugs will be detected and i can work on them before they are completely integrated on to the system. 6. Maintenance Although the software will be ready for end users and will be stable it does not guarantee it will work properly at all times. But i will be reactive to the problem, instead of looking at bugs. I will monitor the performance of the software and create the necessary adjustments to maintain the software.
