Rwandan Youth Participants (ages 17 35) for a Cross Cultural Human Rights Learning and Action Youth Program

Global Youth Connect and the Youth Association for Human Rights Promotion and Development (AJPRODHO-JIJUKIRWA) are looking for Rwandan participants (ages 17 - 35) to join a group of young leaders from the US in an interactive human rights learning and action program. This program will provide a space for youth to share ideas across cultures, learn effective strategies for promoting human rights and enhance skills through the collaborative development of new project ideas and strategies.

MAIN GOAL OF THE PROGRAM: To empower youth to advance human rights and create a more just world.

Specific Objectives of the Program


Increase young activists' understanding of both the context and practice of human rights activism. Facilitate cross-cultural dialogue, enable critical thinking and analysis of complex issues and encourage joint problem solving to address shared human rights concerns. Build the skills, knowledge and confidence of youth to raise awareness, take action and work collaboratively on projects to promote and defend human rights in collaboration with grassroots NGOs, INGOs, policy makers and other stakeholders.

Program Schedule & Themes (example precise schedule is open to change within the dates range of the Program) ** Note Orientation will be in May or June Day 1,2 Day 3-4 Day 5 6 Day 7 Day 8-12 Day 13-14 Day 15-17 Day 18-19 Exploring a Common Understanding of Human Rights (Kigali) Human Rights and Development (Kigali) Human Rights Advocacy and Action in Karongi District Day Off Volunteerism at NGOs (Kigali) Days Off Volunteerism at NGOs (Optional trip to Nyamata Memorial) Workshop Wrap-Up and Site Visits with Government and Institutions (Kigali)

Language: All workshop sessions will be conducted in English and formal translation will not be available. Therefore, English skills are essential. English language skills will be tested and verified by a short telephone interview between the applicant and a member of selection committee. Selection Criteria Interested applicants must meet the following selection criteria:

Rwandan citizen, age 17-35 Demonstrated interest and experience in human rights, social justice and/or Rwandan social issues Fluency in English (intermediate/advanced conversation and reading skills required) Availability to attend all days of the training and orientation

We are strongly committed to selecting participants who represent a variety of voices, opinions, backgrounds, experiences, perspectives.

We strongly encourage young women to apply!


Other Important Information There will be no fee/cost for the participants selected from Rwanda to participate in the workshop. Stipends: Travel stipends will be granted to all participants and will be determined on a personal basis in consultation with AJPRODHO according to public transportation rates. Please do not apply to this program if you plan on trying to save money from these travel stipends. Food: Lunch will be provided during full workshop days, and when outside Kigali all meals will be catered for. During the volunteer service days, the NGOs will provide for lunch on those days. Housing: No housing will be provided in Kigali. Participants coming from outside of Kigali are encouraged to stay with friends or family in Kigali. If you live outside of Kigali, you will need to arrange for your own accommodation in order to be able to attend the training. In Karongi, we will provide housing and food. Certificate of participation: At the end of the program, each participant shall be issued a certificate of participation signed by GYC and AJPRODHO. Only participants who attend all the days shall be given the certificate. About Global Youth Connect and AJPRODHO - JIJUKIRWA Global Youth Connect is a U.S.-based organization dedicated to building and supporting a community of youth who are actively promoting and protecting human rights, and to educate and inspire the next generation to work for peaceful change. This year we are focused on Rwanda and Bosnia. AJPRODHO-JIJUKIRWA is a national, Rwandan human rights and youth organization whose mission is to empower the youth to respect human rights and to advocate for socio-economic betterment.
