WE WILL NEVER FORGET

9/11

First Baptist Church Naples

Resilience But No Repentance

When I was privileged to serve as guest Chaplain in the U.S. Senate shortly after 9/11, I drove into the Capital and passed the recently attacked Pentagon. The Islamic Jihadists had hijacked a jet loaded with hundreds of thousands of pounds of fuel and crashed it at perhaps 500 miles per hour into that tribute to Depression-era engineering. The concentriccircle designed building sustained a direct hit yet remained defiantly intact. Two wings collapsed on the west side, and 125 people died in their offices or onboard American Flight 77. Acts of heroism were demonstrated. Displaced workers commandeered nearby buildings and set up their laptops. Some were even back in their offices the following day. Reconstruction began immediately, though I certainly saw the blackened impact area. American resilience was quickly demonstrated here and in many other sectors of society following 9/11. We are good at bouncing back but not at looking up as a nation. While we seemed to move on from financial catastrophes that year like Enron (12/15) and WorldCom (7/21), any attempts at seeking the Lord seemed hollow. President Bushs poll numbers soared briefly as politicians held their fire for all of two weeks. The phrase God Bless America was on bumper stickers and lips, and it looked as if a miracle was brewing, a bythe-bootstraps moral reform of manners but without God. Hail the selfreformation! Praise the Force! Many sought resilience as the answer to ruin, as when Bruce Springsteen released a new disc, The Rising, with excerpts such as, Dont worry, were going to find a way and This too shall pass. There are some people who are just no fun, such as the prophet, Jeremiah, who said that there will be people saying, peace, peace, when there is no peace (8:11). He would say that singers and politicians are filling you with vain hopes (23:16). No one would want Francis Schaeffer at their party either, who dared to say in Death in the City: Man is justly under the wrath of God, and if the justice of that wrath is obvious concerning any generation, it is our own. Definitely no fun! But he saw further back and further forward than most of us. Our repentance must not be like the dew that goes away early (Hosea 6:4). The evil of the terrorists resides in us to some degree. We must all repent, casting ourselves on Gods mercy and crying out for a return to moral absolutes. While I believe we have risen from the ashes, we have also continued to build on the wrong foundation. Though we live in the greatest country on earth, it is still true that Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord (Psalm 33:12). I pray that we find the Way (John 14:6).

Guest Reception
There is a guest reception in the Commons immediately following the Saturday night and Sunday morning service. Come and meet Pastor Hayes.

Steve Green wrote and sung the popular song, People Need the Lord The second stanza reads like this... We are called to take His light To a world where wrong seems right. What would be too great a cost For sharing life with one whos lost? Through His love our hearts can feel All the grief they bear. They must hear the words of life Only we can share. When will we realize --people need the Lord? The Lord has not brought us to beautiful Naples to live out our lives but rather to out live our lives. We can do that by sharing the good news of Christ with others. Would you like to know how to effectively share? Beginning this Sunday evening September 11 at 4:00 p.m. we will be equipping people on how to share their faith. We will meet in Room DC121. We would love to have you join us.

September 10 & 11, 2011

Freewill offering this weekend at the doors.
Today, there are fewer Bibles published and made available to the worlds 1.2 billion Muslims than for any other major people group. Most Muslims have never even seen a Bible, let alone have a copy of their own. God is currently doing a significant work among Muslims. One of the results of the 9/11 attacks, unintended on the part of the perpetrators, is a new openness of many Muslims to the gospel. They look at the evil acts undertaken in the name of Islam and say, If this is what it means to be a Muslim, there is something wrong with Islam. Finally, the Word of God is more powerful than any weapon man, or Satan, can devise, and He promises in His Word that it will not return to Him until it has accomplished His purpose. Is there any better way to share the truth about Jesus with those who have never heard than to give them the Scriptures in their mother tongue?

SEPTEMBER 2011

stories from the Great Commission

living letters

Joseph Rose* was in college when jets slammed into the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and a Pennsylvania field. After the shock wore off, he started to read about Islam. He got a job, moved into an apartment. His neighbor was a young Muslim from the Middle East. I asked him questions about his country and his religion. He smoked. He bowled. He worked at a hospital and helped his brother open a coffee shop. He was not a terrorist. Just an average guy. Over the next few years Rose met more young Muslims just like thousands of other young people in America. Today he works at the IMB. He continues to nurture friendships with Muslims, and he studies Arabic.

10 years after 9/11

God has called me to dedicate my life to working with and around Muslims, sharing life and Truth with them, Rose says. If it werent for 9/11, I might not be where I am today. I might not have seven guys named Mohammed listed in my phone. I might not have traveled to nine Muslim countries before age 30. God used this tragic event to call me out of the darkness of apathy and ignorance toward Muslims, into the light of service and presence among this vast people. Whats your 9/11 story?

For the people involved in the ministry of Pregnancy Resource Center, one aborted baby is too many. The fact that abortions are being performed right here in Collier County is incomprehensible. But, we cannot do it alone. We need you to join us in our Walk for Life on October 15. Please pick up a walk registration form after church today, or you may download your registration form from our website, www. prcwalkforlife.org and click on Walk for Life. Sermon Notes

The words that so freely pass through our lips should be measured with care. Better yet, they should give praise and thanksgiving to God, Who has generously given to us in many ways, both spiritually and physically. Look for different things for which to praise Him in this weeks passages. Sunday - Psalm 135:1-12 / Monday - Psalm 135:13-21 Tuesday - Psalm 136:1-9 / Wednesday - Psalm 136:10-26 Thursday - Psalm 137:1-9 / Friday - Psalm 138:1-8 Saturday - Psalm 139:1-12
