Nabbed
The change of climate towards the end of the year usually also means inceased spending by consumers as year-end approcahes. But it also means that robbery season is upon us. On Monday morning this week, vehicles of Protect Security in Burgersfort were filling up at Burgerfort Toyota when shots were heard in the region of the banks across the street in Twin City Shopping Centre. Rushing to the scene they found the Police already on the scene after being alerted by a bystander when a woman was allegedly almost robbed at gunpoint when she exited a bank. According to eyewitnesses the culprits had fled in a Nissan Sentra and the Police and the personnel of Protect Security gave chase on the R37 towards Lydenburg. Meanwhile shots were also heard across the street at the new Platinum Place centre and some of the Police personnel rushed there to see what was happening. . The pursuit ended at the tall trees next to the road after passing PLM Boerdery, before the Steelpoort turn-off. In the photograph suspects lie on the ground while Police search the vehicle. Although a firearm was not found, ammunition was found in the vehicle. Five suspects were arrested and was scheduled to appear in court later this week. The photograph was aken by Mr Christiaan Pretorius of Protect Security on his cellphone.

Unions, Anglo agree

Members of the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) at Anglo American Platinum platinum have overwhelmingly accepted a wage offer from the world s largest platinum company. We are happy for our members, very happy that we have been able to negotiate for what makes them happy said Oupa Komane, the NUM Deputy General Secretary and chief negotiator at Anglo American Platinum. World number-one platinum producer Anglo American Platinum said on Wednesday it had formally signed a two-year wage agreement with South African unions. CEO Neville Nicolau said he was pleased with the outcome and the manner in which the process was handled. The National Union of Mine Workers (NUM), the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa and United Association of South Africa have agreed to wage increases of 10% for lower paid workers and 8.5% for higher paid workers in the first year, and 9% and 8% respectively in the second year. In the event that the 12-month average year-on-year consumer price index equals 8% in the second year, the increase will be 8% plus 2%, and 9% plus 2%. Nicolau said We are fully committed to the wellbeing of our employees, and the safety and health of our employees remains our first priority. We are committed to eliminating mine accidents and fatalities and believe that we can only achieve this by working closely with our tripartite partners in labour and government to develop sustainable solutions to achieving our ambition of zero harm. Meanwhile broken-down wage talks between Impala Platinum have been referred to the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA). Wage talks with Northam Platinum and Lonmin will resume later this month.

Unions and Xstrata to the CCMA

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) held a meeting with Xstrata on Tuesday this week in a bid to resolve the internal dispute over the Employee Share Ownership Programme (ESOP) lodged by the union last month. The union says in a press realease the meeting failed to yield any resolution to the dispute. The dispute which arose over disagreement on the Employee Share Ownership Programme. According to NUM, Xstrata argued that employees should benefit from the share scheme according to their grades. The issue will now be referred to the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA). The NUM is opposed to the linkage between benefit and grade. The NUM says the union has agreed with Solidarity to take the matter to the CCMA, paving the way for possible strike action against the ompany. It will now be do or die at the CCMA said Eddie Majadibodu, the NUM s chief negotiator at Xstrata.

The By-election in Ward 17 was neccessary because the ward councillor, Maphoko Lwarence Mametja of the ANC resigned. He won the ward on 18 May this year with 64.38% of the votes in his favour. 48.02% of registered voters (4585) in the ward voted during that lection. On Wednesday the ward was hotly contested between four candidates, one from the ANC, one from the Congress of the People (Cope) and two independent candidates. The voting persentage dropped from 48.02% to 33.91%. Ngwakwane Dorah Mphethi united 67.59% of the votes on her, while Nkanloleng William Mametsa of Cope did not fare well at all with only 71 votes. Imbizo at Ga-Riba
Sekhukhune District Executive Mayor, Mogobo David Magabe (onthe left in phohtograph, left), visited Ga-Riba on Wednesday as part of the governments outreach programme in communities to discuss problems with ervice delivery. Also present to hear first hand what residents experience were Limpop MEC for Roads and Transport, Pinky Kekana (third from left, talking to Kgosi-gadi Riba, second from left) and Greater Tubatse Municipality Mayor, Nkosi Josias Mahlake (right in the photograph). Also present were the District Speaker, members of the mayoral Committee and councillors. One of the main concerns of residents is the condition of the road to GaRiba (everyone who has travelled this road knows it is bad at its best and an absolute nightmare to get to this village on top of the mountain from RibaCross when it rains, then you walk - editor). The days discussions gave ample opportunity to the large audience to air their views on the issue.

Friday!
The people of Limpopo are encouraged to wear their t-shirts/replica jerseys for rugby on the days when Springboks are playing during the Rugby World Cup. Magnificent Friday is a national initiative of Sports and Recreation South Africa which was launched early this year with the aim of making South Africa a sporting nation. The national Arts and Culture Department is also part of the initiative. Activities that will be presented during the Friday campaigns will be teaching people the National Anthem, teaching them about national symbols, distribution of flags and educating the public about the importance of sport in their lives. The rationale and idea behind Magnificent Friday is to build on the tremendous wave of goodwill and national pride that South Africa experienced during Football Fridays that were celebrated during the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

Indigenous vegetation relocated for Tubatse Mall

The developers of the Tubatse Mall retail project, Abacus Asset Management, is spending an excess of R500 000 to relocate indigenous bush and trees, from the 11 hectare construction site, situated in the valley of the Spekboom River in the greater Tubatse Local Municipality, to a nursery situated in the Eco estate itself. The landscape designs done by Landmark Studios, the appointed landscape architects for the Tubatse Mall development, relies mostly on what nature provides, opposed to man-made landscaping and/or structures. However, with the support of the environmental site officer and the necessary approvals in place, some of the indigenous vegetation is being moved to create space for the 32000 m2 retail shopping mall. The contract for the relocation, which was awarded to Tree Traders in Pretoria, includes an aftercare rehabilitation plan to help the transplanted trees to establish themselves more readily. Tree traders has perfected the art of tree relocation, and take every precaution to ensure their long-term survival. Gerrit van Rensburg (083 677 2121) from Tree Traders confirmed plans to reuse the vegetation in the landscaping of the shopping centre and the surrounds. All other plant material will be shredded and used as compost. Some of the vegetation is endemic to Tubatse itself and a large number of indigenous species of plant life such as Commiphora Velvet, Euphorbia Tirucalli, Combretum Zeyheri, various Aloas, Sanseveria and Euphorbia Tirucalli trees, will be retained. Abacus Group is fully committed to taking a responsible approach towards the conservation of the biodiversity of the greater Tubatse area, and imposes some of the very important aspects of environmentally friendly and energy efficient architecture to use less of the earths valuable resources and create sanctuaries for next generations, whilst adding to the vital economic growth of the region. Pressure on farming land vs settlement ground

The recent dispute regarding the occupation of farming land raised the concern of one of the local farmers associations, the Watervalsrivier Vallei Boerevereniging. The land which was previous clearly marked Tswelopele Irrigation Scheme, about 2km outside Burgersfort, is now littered with small shacks, many of them unoccupied. According to various people in the area, the shacks only represent a tentative claim to the area. Many of the people who errected those shacks allegedly have their own homes in Mashifane Park or Praktiseer and would sign lease contracts for the shacks. There are many stories, but the fact of the matter is that amidst serious pressure to claim farming land in white ownership, the government is losing their own land that could have been productive farming areas. The governments hands are also tied because of their own legislation. The Association asks for further investigation into this issue as sensitive matters such as this are often left to just be forgotten. The photograph below shows the area in question with many small shacks. This was previously farming ground that was not untilised.

Three suspects still at large

They recently managed to trace the whereabouts of Smangele Abel Thulare (35) of Mapareng who also escaped in May. He was wanted for 14 cases of housebreaking. When he realised the SAPS has surrounded his house, he started shooting at them before turning the gun on himself. He was rushed to Matibidi Hospital, but later died. The SAPS are appealing to the community to alert them if they encounter outstanding suspects. The other men still at large are Blessing Mohlala (27), Themba Mokoena (30) and Melton Shakwane (30). Do you have Rugby World Cup fever?

The IRB Rugby World Cup kick-off in NewZealand on 9 September 2011. The South African national team - the Springboks, will be playing their first game on Sunday in Wellington. They will be facing the team from Wales. In the build-up to the tournament, the teams have been squaring up and playing psychological games. Some commentary have critisized the way the Springboks play and others the choice of captain. The coach also came under fire for his teams performance in recent games. The team has however showed a united front and told the media and their opposition that they are ready to defend the cup they brought home four years ago. We asked readers whether they will follow the Rugby World Cup and about their opinion on the team and the game against Wales.

South Africa vs Wales in Wellington 11 September 2011, 10:30am South African time

Mr Wilson Ngobeni said: Yes, Ill follow the World Cup. They can win on Sunday. The guys are motivated. This is a different stage, they need to gear up and perform. They are also representing Africa, not only South Africa, so theyve got two caps.

Mr Jackson Riba said: Ill listen to the radio to keep up with what is happening at the World Cup. Can they win on Sunday? Maybe. I think so.

Dis amper dieselfde span as die vorige World Cup.

Mr Thamie Mthabisa and Mr Motseki Mokoena said: On the basis that they are the defending champions they will definitely beat Wales. We will be following the World Cup. Comments about the team are just individual speculation. In the past theyve made it, and the Springboks can do it again. Lets rally behind them, wear our jerseys on Friday and have some Madiba spirit. They can do it for him. They have the confidence coming with national pride and previous experience at the World Cup. They will bring the trophy home. For those who were worried about Habana being match fit, there are enough other players to make up the team and support.

By hom is Roos-Marie van Staden.

Mnr Jacques Hansen s: Die Springbokke sal Wallis maklik wen.

Regs: Me. In my tydjies wat ek niks doen nie, doen ek Facebook. Daar is nie tyd vir rugby nie.

Mr Crosby Masilela said: They will be tough when they start on Sunday. Nothing is impossible. Lets hope they win. Ja, Ill follow the World Cup.

Mr Caplet Rikhotso said: Ja, they will win. We are proud of them. We wish them good luck. It is the right team. Once the coach chooses, it is the right team.
