SHAFT COUPLINGS
Elastomer-in -Shear Type Couplings
The simple design of the S-Flex coupling ensures ease of
assembly and reliable performance. No special tools are
needed for installation or removal. S-Flex couplings can
be used in a wide variety of applications.
Features and Benefits:
Easy to Install.
Maintenance Free.
No Lubrication.
Dampens Vibration and Controls Shock.
Torsionally Soft.
Double Engagement.
The S-Flex coupling design is comprised of three parts.
Two flanges with internal teeth engage an elastomeric flexible sleeve with external teeth. Each flange is attached to
the respective shaft of the driver and driven and torque is
transmitted across the flanges through the sleeve. Misalignment and torsional shock loads are absorbed by shear
deflection in the sleeve. The shear characteristic of the SFlex coupling is very well suited to absorb impact loads.
The S-Flex coupling from Lovejoy offers combinations of
flanges and sleeves wihich can be assembled to suit your
specific application. Thirteen sizes are available with torque
capabilities that range from 60 in-lb to 72,480 in-lb.
The S-Flex flanges are offered in four models which are
made from zinc die cast or cast iron. Sleeves are available in EPDM rubbber, Neoprene, or Hytrel to address a
wide variety of application requirements.

Protection from misalignment, shock, and vibration:

PARALLEL:
The S-Flex coupling accepts up to 0.813mm of
parallel misalignment
without wear. The flexible coupling sleeve minimizes the radial loads
imposed on equipment
bearings, a problem
commonly associated
with parallel misalignment.

AXIAL:
The S-Flex couplings
can be used in applications which require a limited amount of shaft enfloat without transferring
thrust loads to equipment bearings. Axial
movement of approximately 3.175mm accepted.

ANGULAR:
The flexing action of the
elastomeric sleeve and
the locking feature of the
mating teeth allows the
S-Flex coupling to effectively handle angular
misalignment up to 1.

TORSIONAL:
S-Flex couplings effectively dampen torsional
shock and vibration to
protect
connected
equipment. The EPDM
and Neoprene sleeves
have torsional wind-up
flexibility of 15 at their
rated torque. Hytrel provides 7 wind-up.

Flange Types:
Type J - Zinc Die Cast and Cast Iron,
Bore Range... 3/8-1-7/16
Type S - Cast Iron, Bore Range... 1/2- 5-1/2
Type B - Cast Iron w/QD Bushing
Type SC - Cast Iron Spacer
Type T - Cast Iron w/Taper-lock bushing

SHAFT COUPLINGS
Couplings Reduce Vibration, Absorb Shock and
Compensate for Misalignment.
The Power of Torsional Damping
The Lovejoy G-Type Flexible Grid Coupling reduces vibration by as much as 30%, and cushions shock loads to
safeguard your driving and driven equipment. The flexible nature of the spring-like grid absorbs impact energy
by spreading it out over time, thus reducing the magnitude of the peak loads. This is possible because of the
progressive contact that occurs between the curved profile of the hub teeth and the flexible grid. Therefore, as the
load increases, more of the tooth comes into contact with
the grid, thus supplying superior protection and supreme
performance.
Lovejoy G-Type Flexible Grid Couplings are designed for
versatility. Common hubs and grids are used within a
given size range for both horizontal and vertical split cover
models. Grid installation and replacement is a snap at
only a fraction of the complete coupling cost.
Benefits of the Grid Coupling include:
Our G2000 Series Tapered Grid coupling is fully
interchangeable with industry standards.
Quick installation and easy maintenance reduces labor
and downtime costs.
Torsionally flexible and resilient-reduces vibration, plus
cushions shock and impact loads.
Versatile stock components can be used with either
horizontal or vertical covers. Cover fasteners available
in either Metric or Imperial sizes.
High tensile, shot-peened alloy steel grids and precision
machined hubs ensure superior performance and long
life.
Top Quality Manufacturing
Made from a high tensile alloy steel, the grid spring is
carefully formed to shape, then hardened and tempered
under controlled conditions. Next, the grids are shotpeened, compressing the surface molecules and leaving
a residually stressed surface. This process creates a
stronger surface in compression.
Any load applied on the coupling in operation must first
surmount the compressive forces created by peening
before the tensile stress reaches the grid. This provides a
dramatic increase in rating over other coupling types, increases reserve strength for longer life and may permit
selection of a smaller coupling, thus reducing cost.
The Lovejoy Grid spring/hub tooth arrangement has been
specifically designed for optimum performance and supreme reliability. Not only does the hub tooth profile permit progressive loading under torsional shock conditions,
but unique root radii are incorporated to significantly improve the fatigue life of the teeth.

FULL SPACER DESIGN

Ideal for pump applications because drop-out
section allows for pump servicing.
Misalignment Capacity:
Parallel: The movement of the
grid in the hub grooves accommodates parallel misalignment
and still permits full functioning
of the grid-groove action in
damping out shock and vibration.

Angular: Under angular misalignment, the grid-groove design permits a rocking and sliding action of the grid and hubs
without any loss of power
through the resilient grid.

Axial: End float is permitted

for both driving and driven
members because the grid
slides freely in the grooves.

free of backlash; adaptable; free of wear;
numerous special designs, in particular,
flexible universal joint shafts.

Flexible coupling to be mounted on new or

existing drive elements; ideal for application
with considerable misalignment, such as on
diesel-engines, especially for front-power
take-off; for generators, compressors,
pumps, boats, etc. or for shaft to shaft drives
with electric motors.

Economical; simple, though of high quality;

axial plug-in (blind fitting) jaw-coupling.
Hubs of steel, bolted on claws of precision
pressure die-cast aluminium parts with
every smooth surface; standardized
construction principle allows numerous
variation in design; can be radially
assembled; flexible element can be
installed without disturbing the hubs.

To connect 2 shafts in all areas of machine

drives e.g. between electrical motors and
gear boxes, compressors, pumps; also
available with radially removable spacer for
centrifugal pumps (DIN 740) or as flexible
universal joint shaft of any length up to 6m
hubs with finished bore or Centaloc7 spline
clamping hub or taper bushes.

Robust, simple, plug-in jaw-coupling;

numerous types of flanges; suitable for
standard (SAE or DIN) or non-standard
flywheels; different lengths of hubs.

Diesel-generator and centrifugal pump sets,

as well as similar drives with considerable
inertia on the driven side. Type approval
from all important classification societies.

Robust, simple, plug-in jaw couplings with

large permissible finished bores. Various
hub lengths. With type 3 radial exchange of
rubber element - without disturbing the
shafts.

General industrial use for the purpose of

connecting 2 shafts, or flange to shaft.

Robust, plug-in, torsionally stiff coupling,

always for torsionally subcritical drives, oil
and temperature resistant. Type 4 with
integrated flange-adaptor SAE 10", 11"
and 14" for diesel flywheels.

Drives for flange-mounted hydraulic pumps

on diesel engines - especially with
wear-resistant Centaloc7 spline clamping
hub; the ideal and widely used reliable
coupling for hydrostatically dirven
cosntruction machines. Available with a
wide variety of pump mounting adaptors for
diesel engines.

Torsionally very stiff, free of backlash,

angularly flexible coupling; oil-and
temperature-resistant.

Exactly aligned drives for precise,

torsionally stiff and backlash free with exact,
angular transmission, e.g. step motors,
tachometer drives, feeding drives.
Torsionally stiff universal joint shaft.

Torsionally highly elastic, free of backlash,

allround ventilation, compact, plug-in;
standard flywheel dimensions according to
SAE J620. Hubs can be varied; for splined
shafts with wear-free Centaloc7-S-clamping.
Non-standard flywheel mountings available
if required.

Torsionally difficult diesel engine drives,

where the driven components have
relatively small inertias and are required to
run over a wide speed range from low idling
rpm to full engine speed free from
dangerous resonances; e.g. hydrostatic
pump dirves incorporating splitter gears,
screw compressors, boat drives, heat
pumps, generators. Type approval of
important classification societies.

CENTAFLEX

(THE COUPLING WITH THE 5-WAY-FLEX)

Every good elastic coupling has 4-way flexibility:
1. Torsional elasticity
2. Radial flexibility
3. Axial flexibility
4. Angular flexibility
In addition, the Centaflex is uniquely flexible in application, i.e. capable of modification and adaption;
Centaflex therefore has 5-way flexibility.

Characteristics and Advantages

Simple, compact, smooth-face

design.

Low weight, low moment of

inertia.

High performance, high-speed

range, large bores permitted,
ruptureproof.

Large angle of twist with

progressive characteristic
curve (approx. 6 - 8 at
nominal torque).

High elasticity and considerable flexibility in any direction

(radial, axial, angular) with low
counter forces on shafts and
bearings. The shafts do not,
therefore, have to be aligned
accurately.

The action of the Centaflex

coupling is shock and vibration absorbing.

Page 6.15d

The torque is transmitted

absolutely free from play,
uniformly, free from noise, and
electrically insulating.

The coupling requires no

maintenance, the rubber parts
suffer no wear, providing long
useful life with no dirt produced by rubber particles.

The rubber element is air

flushed all-round; the heat
generated is easily conducted
away and the rubber element
remains cool.

The rubber element can easily

be fitted and dismantled
without the use of special tools
or tension bands.

The coupling can be very

easily aligned, relying on line
of sight or with the aid of a
straight edge, without any
special templates or gauges.

Motion Technology

The elements can be dismantled transversely without any

axial displacement.

By slackening the radial

screws, the drive can be easily
separated and rotated without
dismantling.

No axial reaction forces are

imposed on shafts and bearings due to the transmission of
torque.

Rubber elements are available

in various shore hardness
grades. This permits variation
of the torsional stiffness within
wide limits an dits adaptation
to the vibrational requirements
of each drive system.

The rubber elements are

available in various materials:
Standard: Natural Rubber
Special Materials: Perbunan,
Neoprene, etc.

very lightweight. Its one piece construction makes installation simple and the construction provides for heat
and chemical resistance in environments that would be
harmful to elastomeric couplings.
Oldham Coupling

The Lovejoy Miniature flexible couplings have proven

to be particularly suitable in all light duty and precision
applications. The design objective of a Miniature flexible
coupling is to transmit torque loads without permanent
distortion or damage and without imposing undue bending or radial loads upon the driver or driven components.
The specific characteristics of each application determine
the proper flexible coupling to use.
Characteristics such as torsional stiffness, absorption of
vibration, isolation, backlash, tolerance to chemicals and
corrosion and uniform velocity should all be considered in
the coupling selection. Typical operational requirements
for Miniature flexible couplings include light duty, torque
ratings less than 50 in-lbs., torsional rigidity, low inertia,
constant velocity, low radial stiffness, zero backlash, corrosion resistance, and the capability of cyclic (repeated
start/stop/reverse) activity.
Applications that normally use Miniature flexible couplings
have a fractional electrical motor driver. Examples of these
types of applications include shaft encoders, resolvers, all
forms of servo devices, linear and ball screw actuators,
robots, step motors, light duty pumps and metering devices, plotters, positioning tables, computers, and radar.
Lovejoy offers four distinct coupling designs; Beam,
Oldham, Mini Soft, and Jaw. These designs provide a
wide range of alternatives in addressing fractional electric
motor applications.

Beam Coupling

Bore Sizes 1/8, 3/16, 1/4, 3/8, 5/16, 1/2.

3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12mm

The Lovejoy Beam Miniature coupling is formed from one piece of

aluminum rod. After sizing, boring
and installing the clamping mechanism or set screw, the final step is
to cut a spiral flexure or coil in
the coupling. The result is truly a
flexible coupling that transmits
torque through the flexure while accommodating angular,
parallel and axial misalignment.
The Beam coupling provides zero backlash, high torsional stiffness, and high speed capability while being

Page 6.18

Bore Sizes 1/8, 3/16, 1/4, 5/16, 3/8, 7/16, 1/2.

3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 11, 12, 14mm

The Lovejoy Oldham coupling is a

precision engineered, torsionally
stiff, three part coupling suitable
for a great many applications
ranging from incremental control
of fluid valves to highly dynamic
drives in a closed loop servo system. It accommodates misalignment mechanically through a floating disc that engages
tenons machined out of the hubs. As the coupling rotates, the disc aligns with each hub alternately to an
extent demanded by the alignment error. The principle
of operation should not be confused with that of the
Jaw coupling which accommodates misalignment
through compression of an elastomer.
Mini Soft Coupling

Bore Sizes 1/8, 3/16, 1/4, 5/16, 3/8, 7/16, 1/2.

3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 11, 12, 14mm

The Mini Soft Miniature coupling from

Lovejoy provides protection from misalignment, vibration, and shock loads.
The simple design of the coupling
ensures ease of assembly, installation
and reliable performance. No special
tools are needed for installation or
removal. No lubrication is needed and
once installed and aligned correctly,
no maintenance is required.
The Mini Soft Miniature coupling design is comprised
of three pads. Two hubs with internal teeth that engage
an elastomeric flexible center with external teeth. Each
hub is attached to the respective shaft of the driver and
driven and torque is transmitted across the hubs
through the center. Misalignment and torsional shock
loads are absorbed by shear deflection in the center
element. The shear characteristic of the coupling is very
well suited to absorb impact.
Jaw Type Coupling

Bore Sizes 1/8, 3/16, 1/4, 5/16, 3/8, 7/16, 1/2, 9/16, 5/8.
4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 14, 15, 16mm

The interlocking jaws of the three part

Lovejoy Miniature Jaw coupling provide positive engagement resulting
in great strength because of the large
area of contact of the elastomer with
the jaws. This Miniature coupling provides fail safe operations and is the
only coupling that will continue to
run, even if the elastomer center fails,
through the metal to metal jaw contact that will continue to transmit torque.

Tyre Couplings

COUPLINGS
Tyre Couplings Selection Procedure
3. Coupling Size

1. Service Factor

Refer to Table 2 and from the appropriate speed read across

until a power greater than that required is found. The size of
Tyre-flex coupling required is given in that column.

Determine the required service factor from Table 1 below.

2. Design Power

4. Bore Size

Multiply tne normal running power by the service factor. This

gives Design Power which is used as a basis for selecting the
coupling.

Check from Table 3 that selected coupling can accomodate

required bores.

Table 1: Service Factors

G amount by which clamping screws need to be withdrawn to release tyre.

J wrench clearance to allow for tightening and loosening the bush on the shaft and
the clamp ring screws on sizes F40, F50 and F60. The use of a shortened wrench
will allow this dimension to be reduced.
M half the distance between flanges. Shaft ends, although normally located twice M
apart, can project beyond the flanges. In this event allow sufficient space
between shaft ends for end float and misalignment.
* Mass figures are for single flange with mid-range bore and include
clamping ring, screws and washers and half tyre.

Tyre Spacer Couplings

COUPLINGS

Comprising a tyre coupling (size F40 - F140) complete with a forge spacer flange
designed fo ruse on applications where it is an advantage to be able to move
either shaft axially without disturbing the driving or driven machine; e.g.
centrifugal pump rotors. Tyre spacer couplings are primarily for the standard
distance between the shaft end dimensions 100, 140 and 180 mm.

SELECTION PROCEDURE:
1. Select a suitable size of Tyre-flex coupling using the procedure and data on
page 6.20E of this Section of the Manual.
2. Refer size column in Table A and locate the size of coupling selected.
3. Read across this size until required distance between shaft ends (DBSE) can
be accommodated.
4. The size of the spacer coupling is given at head of column.
5. Refer respective coupling dimensional table, Table B, to check that the selected
spacer/coupling combination can accommodate the machine shaft size.
Notes:
* Non-standard spacers are available on request.

Overview

Pin & Block and Needle Bearing Industrial U-Joints

The industrial universal joint product line is well established and provides you with a wide range of
standard and specialised products. The shape of the yoke is a special feature which results in
exceptionally high strength, yet allows full, free movement of the joint. This accounts for the high
horsepower capacity at high speeds.

D Type
This standard industrial-type universal joint with pin and block design is
ideal for applications up to 25 and speeds to 1750 RPM.

HD Type
A high quality universal joint made to exacting tolerances, the HD will
normally provide twice the life of a standard industrial-type universal joint.

D303 Stainless
D type universal joints are available in stainless steel when contact with a
corrosive atmosphere or sanitation requirements are a factor.

Needle Bearing Type

Designed with high quality, pre-lubricated, and sealed needle bearings,
this universal joint provides the reliability necessary for speeds up to 6000
RPM and angles up to 25.

LOJ and JR-4

These economical universal joints with offset pin design are ideal for use
on hand operated, low torque drives. They are capable of operating angles
to 45.

DD and DDX Types

Designed with two Lovejoy standard D type universal joints and a center
connecting shaft, the DD and DDX are tailored to your specific application
requirements.

Multi-Spindle Type
Multi-spindle universal joint assemblies consist of two quality HD universal
joints mounted at opposite ends of a spring loaded shaft. They are used
to connect drill head drives to the drill spindles.

Universal Joint Boots

The life of a universal joint can be extended substantially if booted. Wear
areas of the universal joint are protected from dirt and contaminants, while
lubrication is retained.

Application Service Factors for Universal Joints

Values contained in the table should be used as a general guide. For above average shock loads or start/stop conditions of not more
than once per hour, add .5 to the table value. Universal joints are not recommended for internal combustion engine applications. For
severe shock loads or reversing loads, or start/stop conditions of more than once per hour, add 1 to the table value.

universal joints

Available on request

Designed with Lovejoys standard quality D type

universal joints with a centre connecting shaft
that is tailored to your specific application requirements. This configuration is typical of industrial
applications of universal joints to compensate
for parallel misalignment and shaft separation.
Contact BSC with your specific needs.

D type universal joints are also available in stainless steel for use when contact with corrosive
chemicals, exposure to corrosive atmosphere, or
sanitation requirements are a factor. Stainless
steel universal joints are available from stock in
sizes 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12. They carry lower torque
rating due to strength and wear quality of the
pin. Contact BSC with your specific questions or
needs.

All dimensions in mm.

Maximum operating angle 25, Max RPM 6000.

UNIVERSAL JOINT BOOTS

The life of a universal joint can be extended substantially if booted. Wear areas of the universal
joint are protected from dirt and contaminants,
while lubrication is retained. Lovejoy on-site replaceable boots ensure proper lubrication for up
to 5 times longer universal joint life. Installation
and replacement is fast and easy. Your machine
can be back in operation in minutes. Lovejoy
universal joints: D, D-SS, DD, DDX, HD, NB and
LOJ come pre-grooved to accommodate on-site
replaceable boots.

Torque Limiters

TORQUE LIMITERS
Prevent Machine Damage and Eliminate Costly Downtime
The Torque Limiter is a protective device that limits the torque transmitted in a drive system by
slipping when the torque demand exceeds a preset value as a result of shock loads, overloads,
or machine jams. It automatically reengages when the overload is removed. No resetting is
required. Torque Limiters prevent machine damage and eliminate costly downtime.
Torque Limiters utilize spring loaded friction surfaces for their operation and slip torque is preset
by adjustment of the spring force using the adjustment nut or bolts.
Torque Limiters can be used with a sprocket, gear, sheave, or flange plate as the center
member damaged between two friction facings.
The Torque Limiter ratings are realistic and consistent with optimum spring loads and face
pressures that permit longer slip time, maintain re-engagement at preset torque, and provide
long lasting protection. This is an important advantage over the shear-pin mechanism which
serves only as a one-shot remedy.

Torque Limiters

COUPLINGS

Selection & Center Member

SELECTION
1. Determine the required slip torque from the loading conditions or from the design strength of
the machine. If the loading conditions of the machine are unknown, set the required slip
torque of the torque limiter to 1.52 times the torque that the motor produces on the shaft
where the torque limiter is mounted.
2. Select a torque limiter which has enough torque range and bore range.
3. Determine the proper bushing length from the thickness of the center member to be inserted
between the friction facings.
Always choose the largest bushing which does not exceed the width of the center member.
Maximum thickness of the center member is shown as S max. in the dimension table.

CENTER MEMBER
1. The center member should be machined on its rubbing surface to obtain the rated torque and
be flat, parallel, square with bore, and free from rust, scale and oil. Surface finish recommended is 3S~6S (63 microinches finish).
If the center member is not in accordance with these specifications, the slip torque will be
erratic.
2. Bore of the center member to be machined is shown in the table below. Also, minimum number of sprocket teeth to be used and bushing length to be chosen are listed in the table.

Torque Limiters

COUPLINGS

Torque Setting

TORQUE SETTING
Torque setting of the torque limiter is achieved by tightening or loosening the adjustment bolts
and/or the adjustment nut. For torque adjustment of TL50 through TL89, an adjustment nut is
provided, and for TL127 through TL20, adjustment bolts are provided. The torque setting can
be made after mounting the torque liminter on the shaft. The procedure is as follows:
For TL50 through TL89:
First, rotate the adjustment nut tightly by hand so that the disk spring fits the plate. Then tentatively tighten the nut by 60 with a wrench.
For TL127 through TL20:
First, rotate the nut for fixing the disk spring to the plate, and then tighten each adjustment bolt
by about 60 degrees.
Then, if the torque limiter slips under normal loading conditions, tighten the nut (for TL50~TL82)
or the bolts (for TL127~TL20) gradually until the torque limiter stops slipping. Always tighten (or
loosen) the bolts equally. Try this adjustment several times to find the proper torque setting for
the machine. For your guidance, the chart on the next page shows the relation between the
effective rotated angle and preset torque.
For precise torque setting, run-in of the torque limiter is recommended, for example, 500 revolutions at 50~60 rpm with a rotated angle of 45 of the adjustment nut or the bolts.

in their final positions.

A. L, AL, C and H Types

2.

Jaw hubs and elastomers come in many sizes and types. First,
determine the size and type of components being used. Remove all components from their boxes and loosely assemble
the coupling on any convenient surface. Also check maximum
RPM values in Table 2 against operating speed.

Check parallel alignment by placing a straight edge across

the two hubs and measuring the maximum offset at various points around the periphery of the hubs without rotating the coupling. If the maximum offset exceeds the parallel value in Table 3, realign the shafts.

3.

Check angular alignment with a micrometer or caliper.

Measure the X dimension from one hub to the other at
intervals around the hubs. Determine the maximum and
the minimum dimensions without rotating the coupling. The
difference of these two measurements must be less than
the angular value in Table 3. If a correction is necessary,
recheck the parallel alignment.
Position the spacer between the two hubs with collars loose
on the hub or spacer. Install the snap-wrap spiders and
fasten collars with cap screws. Proceed to Step 3.

1.

Inspect all coupling components and remove any protective coatings or lubricants from bores, mating surfaces, and
fasteners. Remove any existing burrs, etc., from the shafts.

2.

Slide one coupling hub onto each shaft, using keys where
required. Keys should fit snugly.

3.

Position the hubs on the shafts to approximately achieve

the G dimension shown in Table 2. It is usually best to
have any equal length of shaft extending into each hub.
Tighten one hub in its final position.

4.

For style 1 or style 2, if possible, slide the other hub far

enough away to install elastomer. If hub cannot be slid back,
or if blind assembly, tighten second hub on shaft and
bring equipment together.

1.

For style 3, tighten hubs on shafts, do not install cushions

and collar at this time. Tighten setscrews to the appropriate value shown in Table 1.

Slide one adaptor hub onto each shaft, using keys where
required. Position the hubs on the shafts to achieve a spacer
gap as in Figure 5. It is usally best to have an equal length
of shaft extending into each hub. Tighten both hubs with
the set screw torque from Table 1.

2.

Check parallel alignment by placing a straight edge across

the two coupling hubs, and measuring the maximum offset at various points around the periphery of the coupling
without rotating the coupling. If the maximum offset exceeds
the figure shown under Parallel in Table 2, realign the
shafts.

Install the spacer section between the two hubs. The spacer
section includes two jaw rings, the cushions, and a collar.
Fasten the spacer section to the adaptor hubs with the axial
mounting screws and torque them to 68-76 ft-lbs.

3.

Slide collar off jaw ring and set on the adaptor hub. Some
cushions at the bottom side of the coupling can fall out
and may be set aside while checking shaft alignment.

4.

Check parallel alignment by placing a straight edge across

the two hubs and measuring the maximum offset at various points around the periphery of the hubs without rotating the coupling. If the maximum offset exceeds the parallel value in Table 3, realign the shafts.

5.

Check angular alignment with a micrometer or caliper.

Measure the X dimension from one hub to the other at
intervals around the hubs. Determine the maximum and
the minimum dimensions without rotating the coupling.

4.

5.

Check angular alignment with a micrometer, vernier, or

caliper. Measure X from one hub to the other at intervals
around the coupling. Determine the maximum and minimum dimensions without rotating the coupling, the difference of these two measurements must be less than the
Angular value in Table 2. If a correction is necessary, be
sure to recheck the parallel alignment.

Determine the size and type of coupling being used. also check
maximum RPM values in Tables 2 and 3, against operating
speed. Remove all components from their boxes and loosely
assemble the coupling on any convenient surface.

The difference of these two measurements must be less

than the angular value in Table 3. If a correction is necessary, recheck the parallel alignment.
6.

Step1.
Inspect all coupling components and remove any protective coatings or lubricants from bores, mating surfaces, and
fasteners. Remove any existing burrs from the shafts.
Step 2.

1.

Use appropriate section for the type of coupling assembly.

2a. For RRS Type - Styles 1, 2 and 3
1.

Slide one hub onto each shaft, using keys where required.
Position the hubs on the shafts to achieve spacer gap as in
Figures 3 and 4. It is usually best to have an equal length
of shaft extending into each hub. Line up the jaws of both
hubs and tighten them with set screw torque from Table 1

Reinstall the cushions and fasten the collar with cap screws.
Proceed to Step 3.

Slide one hub onto each shaft using the keys where required. Position the hubs on the shafts to approximately
achieve the G dimension shown in Table 2.
It is usually best to have an equal length of shaft extending
into each hub. Tighten both hubs in their final positions
with set screw torque from Table 1. Slide the collar to the
edge of the hub and do not install the spider at this time.
