Effectiveness of Different Known Brand Name Detergents and Laundry Bars in the Removal of some Common Water-Based Stains,

Oil-Based Stains, and Juice Stains in Tetoron Cloth

A Research Proposal Presented to Cebu City National Science High School Salvador St., Labangon, Cebu City

In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for Research I Subject

Statement of the Problem

In the world today and even a few years back, the human race has never obtained nor figured out a way of being free from the pollution, dust, and what not staining any of our clothing. With that given, the making of an easier way to clean clothes which will be through laundry detergents and/or laundry bars. It is not very surprising as it is considered as a necessity to keep everyday clothing clean and keep the wearer covered and protected.

Throughout a certain span of time including the present, there are still many commercials that would compare different brands of laundry detergents from the other. And comparison is usually the best way for the company to show that they have garnered better results from their own product when compared to similar products but from another different company. There are many different versions of the brands so what will be used is the original formula/composition. At some point in time, it will make the viewer of the advertisements wonder if the makers are really telling the truth or are just stretching it out so that people will buy the most-effective brand.

Significance of the Problem

The goal of this proposal is not to individually determine the composition of every cleaning agent that is brought into the experiment but it is to compare and contrast the different brands of laundry detergent. And in order to not just stay in comparing only one kind of cleaning agent, laundry bars will also be used. Laundry bars will not be melted but will be grated as it will be the best way to compare the two.

Whats the whole point in comparing the two kinds of laundry detergent? This will be done to test their effectiveness and see which one is more efficient in results and cost. To keep a sense of balance, the detergents and bars will be recorded separately but in order to achieve the goal, a comparison of the two will really be needed. Although as stated in the very first statement of the first paragraph that such is not the main goal of this comparison, the individual determination of ingredients and seeing what the other agent/brand has that the other does not can prove of help in determining why one may not be as effective as the other,

Scope and Limitation of the Problem

The study is meant to run and be finished in only such a short time-frame, of about one week or so. It will require finalization on the different stains that will be used throughout the process of experimentation. These stains will be done on the same day and estimated to be of the same amount on each piece of cloth. The cloth will also be only from one source to be uniform.

The detergents being compared is only limited to a certain number and is only limited according to its availability here in the Philippines as none of them will be from online shops and shipped from abroad.

Methodology

Set-up The research project must be conducted in a place where either electricity is present (with outlets) or where a gas stove or other utensils are present (preferably in the kitchen). Once all of the materials are prepared, it would be best to have the experiment in a calm/peaceful atmosphere where no one will bother the ones conducting the experiment. This will be important especially in the stage of staining as the cloth with stains (after they are applied) will be left overnight or for the whole cycle of 24 hours in order for it to stick to the cloth. The workplace will need to be free from any surrounding clutter as not only pens and papers but also many other materials will surround the ones who are performing the task.

Materials Materials used for the execution of this experiment will not be that expensive considering that the brands being compared are those common ones that a lot of people would usually see in television commercials. Old and new television commercials in order to keep the variety a little bit bigger.

Pencil and Pens Ruler Bond or Pad Paper

A small assortment of Detergent Powders A small assortment of Detergent Bars Measuring Cup A certain measurement of cloth/ used cloth Staining Material - Consists of any of the following (may or may not be limited to): Ketchup, Oil, Juice, Coffee, Chocolate, Mud and the like.

Hot Water Container and any Stirring tool/ Washing Machine

Procedure a. Come up with possible staining agents. Figuring out what will be used as stains that will be applied to the clothing will be the best thing to do first before anything else. Make out whether ketchup will be used rather than soy sauce, wine rather than coffee if it is really wanted or use all of them. The more the number of different stains the better. But bear in mind that the more stains used, the more cloth will also be used which will only add up to the cost when the cloth being used is bought. Once the possibilities are thought through and an agreement is settled, prepare the staining agents.

b. List the brand/names of detergents that will be used. As much as possible, use what is available at home as this is something everybody will have. If ever there is a need to buy, then make sure that the brands being bought are ones that are heard of by the people.

c. Prepare the pieces of cloth. The pieces of cloth if possible should be of uniform size and is not that small or that big. The number of pieces of cloth will depend upon the number of a detergents being used and the number of staining agents being used which is why it would be recommended to use old cloth that is not of use anymore.

d. Apply the different staining agents on the cloth pieces. In doing so, one must make sure that for each piece of cloth, distribution and amount will be equal for each variety so that the results will not be biased.

e. Set the stained cloth pieces within the time frame of 10~24 hours. This is done to assure that the stain is not merely clinging onto the surface but has already penetrated into the cloth. The longer the time, the better it would be. A total of twenty-four hours would be the best.

f. Prepare a container and fill it with hot water. The container should preferably be somewhat cylindrical for easier stirring. Hot water is recommended as the stirring process will only take a while.

g. Add the respective stained pieces o f cloth (one of every kind) and then pour the first chosen detergent or bar (if bar, it should be grated). A ratio between the amount of liquid present and the amount of detergent placed should be present, it will be up to the ones doing the task to estimate, but for every detergent powder/detergent bar, it should be the same to avoid getting fallible results.

h. Stir and Soak After the stirring for three minutes, what will follow is soaking them/leaving them untouched in the hot water for two minutes. This will start the process of the detergent to fully function.

i. Rinse container with cold water and Mix. Make sure that the water really is cold or at the least a little bit lower than the normal temperature when you do the rinsing. After making sure, mix the cold water and the pieces of cloth for yet another three minutes.

j. Squeeze the pieces of wet cloth and leave them to dry. The pieces of cloth should be placed on a clean surface to avoid any further stains.

k. Repeat steps f to j for every different cleaning agent.
