Declination Studies
Besides showing parallels and contra-
parallels in the full aspect grid, Solar Fire
shows declinations in tables sorted to
make parallels and out-of-bounds plan ets
easy to see. There are also new graph ic
dec li na tion strips. Dynamic hitlists now
show not only transits and progressions
in dec li na tion, but also directions in dec-
li na tion. Plus, you can print ephem er ides
showing dec li na tions as they change over
time. There are also new lon gi tude equiv a-
lent tables and charts.
Eclipses
Solar Fires Eclipse Search lets you search
any timespan between 2000 bce and 3000
ce for solar and/or lunar eclipses in a given
Saros series, eclipses that aspect a speci-
fed zodiacal position, or eclipses that as-
pect a given chart. For each eclipse found,
you can see the eclipse type, Saros num-
ber, magnitude and duration, and you can
double-click on it to view a chart wheel for
the moment of maximum eclipse. You can
also calculate a whole string of consecu-
tive eclipses, and can include eclips es in
the dynamic hitlists.
Chart pages can show prenatal eclips es,
and you can also include these as sen si tive
points in wheels and dials.
Fixed Stars
Solar Fire in cludes the po si tion, mag ni tude,
spec tral class and other info on 290 stars.
Its extraordinary Fixed Star Editor lets you
add more stars, sort them, print star lists,
and even fnd exact star positions in eras
re mote from our own. You can put stars
into chart wheels and listings, list planet-
star as pects and parans, and print eph e mer-
i des show ing changing star positions over
the eons. (Adding the Galastro da ta base,
you can also put black holes, quasars,

Helpful Data Listings: For any chart, you

Forecasting: Besides natal charts, Solar
Maps 3 casts transiting, progressed
(secondary and tertiary), and now, also,
solar arc-directed charts. It displays
these in regular or local-space wheels as
well as on maps as they affect the natal
chart angles. A new addition is the abil-
ity to mix inner progressed with outer
transiting planets on the same map,
according to the C*C*G* forecasting
method advocated by Jim Lewis.
Animated Maps: You can now step the
transiting, progressed or directed astro-
lines for a persons chart through time at
whatever speed you wish. You can also
watch current planetary positions continu-

Eclipses: You can select one or more solar
eclipses from 1801 to 2200 AD, and dis-
play their paths of totality and partiality

You can now add storm tracks and the

Interpretations: For any locality, you can

W
ith their meticulous record-keeping of heliacal ris-
ings, eclipses and the path of the planets through the
constellations, the peoples of ancient Mesopotamia laid the
foundations for all of the Western and Vedic astrology that
followed. Their actual, immediate observation of celestial
happenings makes a refreshing and instructive complement
to our more abstract approach today.
Now, after years of study, Rumen Kolev has released his
Babylonia computer program to help you understand and do
research on the practice of the Babylonian astrologers.
Comparing Babylonias computations with Francesca Roch-
bergs complete collection of extant Babylonian horoscopes,
the author fnds a high level of agreement with the ancient
cuneiform texts. The data for erecting these early horoscopes
is included in a 32-chart fle that comes with Babylonia 1.5.
Simulating Direct Observation
The opening screen of Babylonia 1.5 shows a unique view
of the sky as an observer would see it at a given time from a
specifc location on earth. You can change locations, and can
even animate the sky to watch the planets and principal stars
rise, culminate, set and anticulminate as time passes.
Also included are tables showing the rise and set times of the
Sun and planets, their azimuth of rise and set, and the bright-
ness of the planets. As a bonus, heliocentric views show in-
formation about the planets apogees and perigees, aphelia
and perihelia, and current distance from the Sun and Earth.
Computing Heliacal Phases
One of the most important parts of Babylonian astrology
was observation of heliacal risings (the frst appearance of a
celestial body after its conjunction with the Sun) and helia-
cal settings (the bodys last appearance before its conjunc-
tion with the Sun).
Accurate computation of the dates of heliacal risings and
settings depends on many factors, including the brightness
of the body, its declination, and the latitude of the observer.
In computing the theoretical heliacal phases of planets, the
author uses Schochs Oxford tables for the arcus visionis of
the planets, and Jean Meeus astronomical algorithms.
So that you can track the lunar and planetary phases as the
Babylonian observers did, Babylonia 1.5 shows all the phas-
es. There are circular diagrams of a given bodys phases like
the ones shown on the next page. Theres also a very use-
ful Babylonian Planets Calendar table that inter-sorts the
Babylonias unique sky view helps you see how the planets and
stars relate to the local horizon and meridian when seen from a par-
ticular spot on earth. It also shows how far each body is north or
south of the ecliptic (shown here by the next circle from the middle).
Additional displays include a bar graph depicting when the Moon
and visible planets will rise, transit (culminate) and set, and when
this will happen relative to twilight and the day-night cycle. The
hours are shown across the top, and the vertical dotted line repre-
sents the current moment.
You can convert modern-style dates
to the Babylonian calendar and vice
versa. Plus, in case youre working
with Babylonian texts, you can in-
put time directly in the Babylonian
calendar. There are options for 7
different Babylonian eras. Since
the Jewish calendar is similar, you
can also use this feature to convert
Jewish dates to modern ones.

Babylonia 1.5 is a standalone program that expands the ba-
sic Babylonian astrology features in Placidus/Porphyrius. It
was created for all who want to read the sky the Babylonian
wayat twilight, with the unaided eye, taking in the heliacal
phases and noting the appearance (and beauty) of sunrise and

useful primary directions to the angles.
In most primaries, 1 day = about 360 years. With the prima-
ries available in Babylonia 1.5, you can have much faster
directions, such as:
1 Babylonian day = 12 Babylonian years
1 Babylonian day = 1 Babylonian year
1 Babylonian day = 1 Babylonian month
1 Babylonian month = 1 Babylonian year.
Using the slower, more conventional primaries you can block
in time periods when a certain infuence will prevail. Using
the faster Babylonian primaries you can then fnd when that
infuence will peak.
The author has checked this method with past events on vari-
ous charts, and is very pleased with the results. Looking frst
at the ordinary primaries and then at the faster primaries with
the same planet, he pinpointed several events in his own
chart and that of another person down to the day of the oc-
currence. Besides enabling more precise forecasting, these
faster primaries also have the potential to improve rectifca-
tion, and there is a special display to facilitate this.
For convenience, Babylonia also provides transits and the
ordinary primaries of planets to angles, including 1 day =
360 years and 4 minutes (1 degree) = 1 year.

and NC points, but is not shown because it is then invisible to
the observer. The full Moon occurs midway between the AR event
(Moon seen rising just before sunset) and CS event (Moon seen
rising just after sunset)events which, unlike the moment of the
exact Sun-Moon opposition, can be precisely observed by anyone
looking at the sky.
Converting Babylonian Dates
Babylonia 1.5 also does something that even scholars in the
feld can have trouble doingconverting between Babylo-
nian and Gregorian dates. Conversion is possible for all lo-
cations where this is valid (i.e., those below 66 latitude).

Founded as Astro-Graphics Services in late 1979 by the astrologers Robert
Hand, Gary Christen, Arthur Blackwell, Steve Blake and Patricia White,
Astrolabe is celebrating its 32nd year. Starting with programs for the Radio
Shack TRS-80, the Apple II and early CP/M computers, it is now a world leader
in astrology programs for Windows which can also be run on Macs. Besides
publishing programs for individual users, Astrolabe develops custom software
for third-party commercial use, including the Kiosk, a turnkey astrological
package for web developers. In addition, the Michelsen-Simms Trust has
appointed Astrolabe to administrate the ACS PC Atlas and license it to other
software and web developers.
Astrolabe also provides a full range of chart-calculation and astrological
report services. Its website, alabe.com, offers many popular charts and reports
for sale, plus well over 4 million free natal charts each year.
Along with president Gary Christen and vice-president Pat White, Astrolabe
employs astrologers Madalyn Hillis-Dineen and Ray White at its offices in
Massachusetts. It has a semi-autonomous division in Great Britain and direct-mail customers in countries from Argentina to Zimbabwe.
