Training dogs to behave off leash

BY JENNIFER PAN, OWNER, BISCUITS DOG BOUTIQUE ometimes it can be a stirring event when dogs display anti-social or aggressive behavior. Socializing your pups at a young age is key to introducing them to the environment. Sometimes we still find a dogs social behavior calls for correcting. As an owner of three amazing dogs, Ive gained a trove of valuable information and hope to pass a few easy tips that can bring harmony to your pack.

Teaching off leash recall techniques

Be aware, while off leash training is an important tool, it should only be used in controllable environments for the safety of you and your dog. Rosemary Gardens Park requires dogs to be leashed at all times. Rosemary Gardens nearest dog park is Ryland Dog Park at the corner of N. San Pedro St. and Ryland St. Another park not too far away is San Joses newest dog park at Watson Park, which opened Aug. 27 at E. Jackson St. and 22nd St. A complete list of San Jose dog parks can be found at the Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services website at: http://www.sjparks.org/dogparks/ As dog lovers, the worst scenario are loose, uncontrollable dogs. Not only for those who are walking their dogs on leash, but also for those who practice off leash walking. Without proper recall techniques, your dog can easily be distracted and even though he or she may have no track record of attacking another animal or running into the middle of the street, it just

Recall training for your dog

Continued from Page 1

takes one time to possibly end his/her life. The important lesson in allowing your dog off leash is your ability to retrieve him/her in any situation. That means even when your dog is in instinct mode, eyes wide on that little squirrel or bird perched up in the trees. Teaching recall techniques to your pup is a life saving technique, especially when living in a city environment. The first step is to invest in a whistle. A whistle is perfect because its constant, it sounds the same no matter what environment or who is using it. It also produces a sound that cant be replicated and can be heard from half a mile away. Youll also need a high value treat, and when we say high value, that means something you might even want to take a nibble out of. Create a pattern with the whistle, something along the lines of two short tweets, then one long one. After setting this pattern, whistle the combination and give your dog a treat.

This will teach him/her that after they hear this combination, they are entitled to a mouth watering reward. Continue practicing this for about 2-3 weeks, starting in your home so your dog become accustomed to the sound and reward. Move along to the backyard or dog park, while your dog is distracted do the combination and when he/she returns to you, give them that high value treat. Continue this for another 2-3 weeks. In the end, that whistle will be your best friend as well as theirs.Weve seen this technique used at the busiest dog parks, where distraction is at every corner and it has worked beautifully. Teaching recall is not only essential in keeping your dog safe but can also help if they escape from the yard. Since again the whistle can be heard from quiet a distance, it can cut your search short with just a few tweets!

ummer is over and the Bachrodt Eagles are back in school for another incredible school year! On Saturday, August 13th, students were on campus for the Back to School Kick Off event. The kindergarteners and their families spent some time on their playground getting to know each other and their teachers. Throughout the morning, the students and families received a lot of helpful information, met their teachers and celebrated the start of the new school year. Bachrodt is excited to have a new principal, Mr. Rigoberto Palacios. Mr. Palacios comes to Bachrodt from Hoover Middle School and he brings a great deal of knowledge and experience to the school. He has been hard HEIDI WOLCOTT Vice President, at work since July, and is already Bachrodt PTA making a remarkable difference at the school. He is making a very positive impact on the students, staff and families at Bachrodt. The Parent Teacher Association (PTA) has already met and is planning many activities for the Bachrodt Community. Some of the activities include an outdoor family movie night in September, a Halloween carnival in October, the annual Turkey Trot walk-athon in November and the Winterfest in December. There will also be several fundraisers happening throughout the year to help provide additional opportunities for students and to help support educational initiatives. The PTA is also excited to be offering several after-school enrichment classes for students, including art, tap & ballet, ballet folklorico, choir and robotics. These classes give students an opportunity to explore new opportunities right on campus! A reminder to our RGNA neighbors ... please remember that there are no dogs allowed on the Bachrodt field. Students do not enjoy stepping in surprises during recess or P.E. Please walk your dogs in Rosemary Gardens Park, across the street from the school. On behalf of the students at Bachrodt, we really appreciate your cooperation! Thanks to the RGNA for their continued support. We look forward to collaborating on more events this year!
