UVGI - Ultraviolet Germicidal Irradiation (Prototype)

What is UV radiation?
UV radiation energy waves are the range of electromagnetic waves 100 to 400 nm long (between the X-ray and visible light spectrums). The division of UV radiation may be classified as Vacuum UV (100-200 nm), UV-C (200-280 nm), UV-B (280-315 nm) and UV-A (315-400 nm). Naturally, the sun emitted ultraviolet radiation in its sunlight spectrum combining with many other wavelengths of light spectrum including radio waves, infrared, visible light, x-rays, gamma rays and cosmic rays. The Earth's ozone layer blocks most of this UV radiation from penetrating through the atmosphere. 98.7% of the ultraviolet radiation that reaches the Earth's surface is UVA.

How does it work?

In terms of germicidal (disinfection or decontamination) effects, the optimum UV range is between 245 and 285 nm. DDC UVGI system utilizes low-pressure mercury lamps that emit maximum energy output at a wavelength of 253.7 nm. Unlike most disinfectants, ultraviolet (UV) radiation does not inactivate microorganisms by chemical interaction. UV radiation inactivates air-borne and surface-borne organisms by absorption of the light which causes a photochemical reaction that alters molecular components essential to cell function. As a result, no residual is produced. As UV rays penetrate the cell wall of the microorganism, the energy reacts with nucleic acids and other vital cell components, resulting in injury or death of the exposed cells.

Use of UVGI to Deodorize, Sanitize and Decontaminate:
Numerous studies over the years have proven UVGI is highly effective in inactivating microorganisms that cause odors and diseases. The unit is suitable to use to deodorize, sanitize, decontaminate area of approx. size of 140 square feet, for larger space, one may need to use it in rotary employment system. See below diagram.

Direction of use:
1. 2. 3. 4. Pre-clean and wash areas to be deodorized/disinfected, Close all doors and windows, Remove nearby (within 12 from center of light) combustibles/flammables, Remove nearby (within 12 from center of light) reactive chemical compounds/solutions, 5. Place UVGI system at the center of room/area, 6. Connect power plug and switch on the UV light. Never stare direct at the UV light! 7. Leave the UV light switched on for at least 2 hours, 8. Switch off before re-enter the room/area, 9. Use it in rotary employment system for area larger than 140 square feet, 10. Store UV light at dry and well-ventilated place, do not hold or cover UV lamp tube by hand, soiled/oily lamp surface may block UV radiation. Always keep out of reach of children.

Safety measures and precautions:

Do not expose UV light to human, animals, plants. It may cause skin and eye damages. Never stare direct to the UV light! Do not expose UV light to flammables or reactive chemical compounds/solutions. It may cause fire and chemistry reaction. If exposure is unavoidable, wear UV-resistance long sleeve clothes, socks, shoes, gloves and eye-ware when operating UV light. If exposure is unavoidable, use UV-resistance clothing to cover all chemical containers. Some materials may not compatible to UV light. Please consult your manufacturer if you are unclear about the material compatibility. In case of broken lamp tube, dispose it immediately. Wear particle mask/respirator to avoid inhaling mercury substances and wear gloves when handling broken tube. Open all door and windows for air ventilation and wash area thoroughly with water to remove remnants.
