North State Symphony, Sept. 24-25

The North State Symphony celebrates a decade since the Chico and Redding Symphonies merged in 2001 with its seasonopening concert, The Future Begins!, a program featuring works by Beethoven and Stravinsky. Concerts will take place on Saturday, September 24 at 7:30 p.m. in Chicos Laxson Auditorium and Sunday, September 25 at 2 p.m. in Reddings Cascade Theatre. A pre-concert talk for the Chico performance begins at 6:30 p.m. in Rowland-Taylor Recital Hall; a talk prior to the Redding performance takes place at 1 p.m. at the Cascade Theatre. The Future Begins! features New York pianist Diane Walsh playing Beethovens Fourth Piano Concerto. Walsh has performed with symphony orchestras from San Francisco to Berlin. She has been featured frequently in the play 33 Variations, by Moiss Kaufman, during performances in Washington, D.C., on Broadway and in Los Angeles. The play is based on the last year in the life of Beethoven, and also inspired Ms. Walsh to record Beethovens Diabelli Variations. Following the Beethoven concerto, maestro Kyle Wiley Pickett will lead the North State Symphony in The Rite of Spring, by Igor Stravinsky. This famous piece, written for a ballet, caused a scandal at its Paris premiere. The powerful music has always impressed listeners, even without the ballets sexually provocative choreography. Music Director Pickett described the concert as, the perfect way to celebrate the launch of our second decade. This music is beautiful and bold. What could be better? Later concerts in the North State Symphonys 2011-12 season, in November, December, February and May, will feature photography by Ansel Adams and North State young people; Holiday favorites including Messiah highlights; more Beethoven; and classical guitar music. Information on future concerts, fundraising events, and the NSS Chamber Music Series, is available at the NSS website, www. northstatesymphony.org. Advance tickets for The Future Begins! are available in Chico at the University Box Office, 898-6333, and in Redding at the Cascade Theatre Box Office, 2438877. The North State Symphony is part of California State University, Chicos School of the Arts / College of Humanities and Fine Arts.

Dolores Mitchells Chico + 20 Miles

Dolores Mitchells exhibit of oil and water media paintings, Chico + 20 Miles, (Sept. l4 to October l5) opens with a Friday, September l6 reception (5-8pm) at Avenue 9 Gallery, l80 E. 9th Ave., Chico. Mitchell says: In addition to Bidwell Park and Chico city scenes, I will be showing new landscapes of rice fields from Richvale and Durham. The changing colors of the fields attract meneon green in spring, gold in autumn, and mirrors to the sky when flooded in winter. I aim for a poetic response rather than documentation. The California Rice Commission is featuring Mitchells art on its Facebook blog: http://calrice.org/Industry+Info/ CRC+Blog.htm?id=1314201060 Mitchell says: A new subject for me has been the large Koi pond with fountain at the Abbey of New Clairvaux, Vina. Ive explored ways that water, light and reflections of sky and trees interact to reveal or conceal the multi-colored koi. Mitchell encourages fans of her kitchen table mini-paintings to come by Avenue 9 before the reception on sneak preview

Square Deal Mattress Factory Opens Inside Corlin Paint

ond Olive Highway address then finally settling at the Oro Dam location in 2002. Rocky Niles owner of Corlin Paint and Richard Lash owner of Square Deal Mattress Factory have been friends for many years. Both have family roots that go back decades in their respective industries. Square Deal Mattress began as a family business in 1920. Richard Lash is the grandson of the founder Ennis Rife. Corlin Paint, as a manufacturing company, was formed by Rocky Niles more recently in 1982, but his father Don was in the paint manufacturing business over 25 years, and at one point owned a chain of paint stores. Square Deal Mattress Factory has a long established reputation for building a line of quality, hand-made mattress products designed to be long lasting. Besides making a better mattress at a better price, Square Deal mattresses have some unique features. For example, all are double sided and the factory has the ability to customize a mattress to fit individual needs. Double-sided mattresses can be turned over periodically effectively doubling the life expectancy. If one likes to get to the heart of things, you can even watch your mattress being constructed. From its earliest days, the company has renovated furniture of all kinds and styles. The entire Lash family takes a special pride in restoring heirloom furniture which can involve stripping pieces down to bare wood for frame repair and reupholstering into something to cherish. The factory is located at 1354 Humboldt Avenue in Chico, CA and can be found on line at squaredealmattress.com.

North Yuba Harvest Fest, Sept. 17

North Yuba Harvest Festival Celebrates Local Agriculture The biggest wine and food event in the north foothills, the North Yuba Harvest Festival, is coming up Saturday, September 17 in Oregon House. This will be the 6th annual celebration of the gold-medal wines and olive oils that are produced by the unique climate and soils of our local foothills. North Yuba has received international recognition as a premium wine and olive oil region with local producers garnering coveted medals at major state, national and international competitions. The Festival draws five or six hundred visitors each year, many of whom want to sample the new vintages and extra virgin oils, and to take home their selections of the best of the best. Others come for the whole range of attractions, about 50 vendors in all: food stalls offering everything from haute cuisine to hot dogs, arts & crafts, antiques, Farmers Market, coffee bistro, childrens activities and live musical entertainment for a day of family fun. Yuba Wines & Olive Oils Why are They So Good? Wine grapes and olive trees have been grown in North Yuba since the 19th century, and some olive trees are over 100 years old. North Yuba has its own recognized AVA (American Viticultural Area) and it is also within the much larger Sierra Foothills AVA. With altitudes around 1500 to 2000 feet, the regions warm days and cool nights produce quality grapes with high acidity and concentrated flavors and aromas. The rocky soils force the vines to dig deep for water and nutrients, resulting in small yields but intense flavors. Four North Yuba wineries will be pouring at the Harvest Festival this year, and three local olive oil producers will have samples for tasting: Lucero Vineyards & Winery, Renaissance Vineyard & Winery, Clos Saron, Grant-Eddie Winery, Apollo Olive Oil, Calolea Olive Oil, and Sierra dOro. The Wine Spectator has said Renaissance makes some of Californias finest cabernets, bar none. Clos Saron makes a Pinot Noir so distinctive that they are sold out every year before release. Grant-Eddie Winery specializes in Rhone varieties and a signature Port; their 2009 Port captured the Gold Medal at this years California State Fair. Lucero Vineyards & Winery focuses on Cabernet, Merlot, and Chardonnay for which it has collected various silver, gold and first awards, and their Merlot Reserve is featured in Great Boutique Wines You Can Buy Online. All three participating olive oil producers, Apollo, Sierra dOro and Calolea won Best of Show (in their respective categories) at the Los Angeles International Competition, probably the most important olive oil event of the year with 400 producers from 23 countries competing. These local growers have consistently won gold medals at the prestigious L.A. competition. Caloleas Monica Keller says one reason for our regions success is our terroir, the industry term for the combination of soil, climate, and other factors that create a unique growing area. Keller says thats why the very large producers buy their olives in this region, including Yuba and Butte Counties. How to get there: Just a drive-in-thecountry away from Marysville/Yuba City, Chico, Grass Valley, and Nevada City, the Festivals venue is an oak-shaded meadow above the Alcouffe Community Center, 9185 Marysville Road, Oregon House, CA 95962. Entrance is free, with suggested parking donation of $5. The Wine Tasting is $10, including souvenir wine glass. For information, call 530-692-2476 or visit www. alcouffecenter.org. Vendor fees range from $25 to $50, with tents $10 extra. All proceeds benefit the Community Center.

Issues & Hors doeuvres Sept. 25

The League of Women Voters of Butte County will host an Issues & Hors doeuvres fall program for members and the public on Sunday, September 25 from 2-5 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, 850 Palmetto Ave. in Chico. The topic of the afternoon program will be Redistricting: Making Each Vote Count. Guest speakers include Charley Turner, Maureen Kirk, and Maria Phillips. The panelist presentations will shed light on the current process and differences in outcomes of redistricting efforts in California and Butte County. Professor Turner and Supervisor Kirk will speak to their experiences with State and County redistricting, respectively, while Ms. Phillips will lend a citizens perspective, having been the spokeswoman for a neighborhood group in the Countys most recent redistricting process. Following the presentations, there will be a question and answer session for the audience. The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan, political organization that encourages citizens to play an informed and active role in government. For more information about membership in the League, or about any of its education and advocacy programs, please visit www.lwvbuttecounty.org or call 895-VOTE (8683).

Gardening with Alex

Alexandra Heath Its Time for Fall Planting!
OK, so its 102 degrees out and looks to stay hot for awhile, but this month (on the 23rd) marks the autumnal equinoxthe beginning of fall. There are still veggies ripening in the garden and lots more canning and freezing to do before the harvest is done, but now is the time to begin preparing for your fall garden. With most of the garden beds still in production, it will save time and garden space to start fall vegetables in pots. They wont need any additional heat to germinate, but will need careful attention to moisture. Pots dry out fast and any germinating seeds will die before they can poke their heads through the soil. Putting trays of pots into plastic bags will help keep the seeds moist, but can cause the pots to heat up too much. Just be sure theyre in a shaded area, and check twice a day at least to make sure the soil is still moist. In this part of Northern California we can expect relatively warm days through the end of December, which gives us about three months of growth before the cold of the new year begins. Records from the past indicate that by the end of October we will have our rst frost, but the weather patterns have been changing and we might get a reprieve until the end of November or possibly the beginning of December. We wont get our hard freezes until after the New Year. So what to plant? There are a wide variety of cold weather crops that will do well in our moderate climate, but you might want to buy some late season seeds to make sure that the plants will grow quickly and survive (or even thrive) in cold weather. This year Ill be planting Marathon broccoli. Its a hybrid, but it reaches maturity in 68 days, forms nice tight heads and will keep producing even when the weather is downright chilly. Although Ive put up my summer broccoli in the freezer, its still a delight to have something fresh and green on the dinner table in the dead of winter. For those of you who have yet to grow broccoli, youre missing a real treat. Fresh from the garden at the peak of avor, homegrown broccoli literally melts in your mouth! Other cold weather crops to try this year: carrots, lettuce, spinach, peas, parsnipsand you can begin cole crops in the greenhousekale, cabbage, cauliowerfor setting out in early spring. Since these crops have very long growing seasons, getting a head start now for spring planting means that youll have early veggies from the garden and will likely avoid the dreaded cabbage moth season since the moths dont begin to appear until June or July to lay their eggs. Im trying an experiment this year and will be planting Brussels sprouts. Ill start the seedlings this month and will set them out later in the year. Traditionally these tasty little sprouts increase in avor after a frost. Im hoping to take advantage of the frigid weather weve been getting at the beginning of the year. It may not pan out, but thats part of the fun (and lesson) of gardening. Be sure when you start preparing your beds for fall to give them a good dose of compost, well-rotted manure or organic fertilizer. Theyve been producing all summer and need to be fed so that they can keep producing through the winter. We all know that veggies are full of vitamins and minerals, but they get those things from the soilso dont starve your soil! Any beds that you wont be using need to be given a bit of protection from the elements. Put down black plastic, which has the advantage of helping the soil warm up in the spring, keeps it from getting waterlogged so it can be worked earlier in the year and prevents weed germination, or mulch. As the weather starts to cool and the trees put on their fall colors, I wish you as alwaysHappy Gardening!
