August, 2011 Time : 2.10 3.10 (60 minutes) Theme : People and Social Issues Topic : How to stay safe on the internet Focussed Skill(s): Writing Integrated Skill(s): Reading Curriculum Specifications: 2.1 Obtain information for different purposes by: a. reading materials such as articles in print and in electronic media Level 1, 2, 3 ii. Reading silently and aloud with understanding a variety of texts of suitable length (e.g. signs, notices, labels, warnings, instructions, descriptions, advertisements, directions, messages, simple passages, annotated series of pictures, information in tables). 2.2 Process information by: b. extracting main ideas and supporting details. B. Preparation for the Real World learning how to stay safe on the internet is important as internet is becoming an indispensable necessity in life. Students need to learn to protect themselves if they were to be efficient internet users. Lesson Objectives: By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

1) Read the passage given and demonstrate their understanding of the passage by underlining all the main ideas (identify the strategies to stay safe on the internet such as never give out personal information and etc). 2) Write a summary to summarise the main ideas identified (a summary on how to stay safe on the internet). Language Content: The difficult words in the passage such as pornographic, harass Teaching Aids: Mind-map, handout 1 (the passage for the summary) Previous Knowledge: Students are internet users in lives. Anticipated Problems: Time management is crucial as students are required to submit the summary by the end of the double-periods lesson.
Stage/Time Set Induction (5 minutes) Content - Discussion and mindmap. Teaching-Learning Activity Activity 1 - T draws a mind-map on the blackboard asking about the risks of using the internet. - A few Ss are called to fill up the mindmap (what they think the risks are). - The class then discusses a few risks such as sexual harassment, scams and etc. Activity 2 (8 minutes) - T gives out handout 1, which is the passage for summary writing. - One student is asked to read aloud the short text for the whole class. - T teaches some difficult words in the passage such as harass, pornographic and etc. Activity 3 (12 minutes) - Ss underline the main ideas in the passage (the strategies to safeguard oneself on the internet) Rationale - To prepare Ss for summary writing, which is about the strategies to stay safe on the internet. - To activate relevant schemata about internet use and safety. - Modeling, a form of scaffolding is provided before Ss are required to write the summary themselves. T goes through the answers with the class to ensure that the class has identified the main points correctly (a few Ss are asked to share their answers with the class). T asks Ss to write the summary using their own words. Modeling is done for one point (how the synonyms can be used to substitute for some words and express the points, with the original meaning retained). Ss write the summary using their own words (paraphrasing). T monitors Ss work and provides help where needed. Asking Ss to produce the summary and submitting their work by the end of the lesson enable T to evaluate the extent to which the lesson objectives have been achieved (have Ss grasped the concept and skills of writing a good summary). Reviewing and recapping help reinforce Ss memory and understanding
