VISIBLE METRICS FOR LEAN

MANAGEMENT FOR SENIOR
MANAGERS -

WHY AND HOW

Lean management is about maximising the
value delivered to customers by reducing
waste and rework.

Presenter: P. Grant Rule, Software Measurement Services

This workshop looks at what this means in terms of managing software projects, and
how to align improvements in the software process to the delivery of value to the
business. Measures of process performance support the identification of waste and
rework in the software development process. Judicious use of objective data is
essential for implementing efficient and effective processes.

“Measure, Assess, Calculate, Compare, and Commit to victory” (Sun Tzu c.500 BC)

Grant Rule, pioneer of the application of Lean techniques to software process

improvement, considers the principles of good generalship, identified by Sun Tzu over
two and a half thousand years ago, can be equally applied to software projects.
Organised by:

• If it matters……………… measure it
• If it’s worth measuring … it’s worth analysing

• Analysis of variation …… helps calculate causes

• Comparison of causes … demands action
• Commitment to action … requires visibility

The success record of software measurement programmes is poor. One of the most
frequent causes is a failure to apply the metrics gathered to the decision-making
Sponsored by:

process. Since the purpose of gathering metrics is to inform decisions, any

measurement programme that is not applied atrophies. One of the root causes for
failing to analyse and apply metrics is treating software measurement as a separate,
add-on activity. Its findings are sidelined – and therefore invisible. To be useful,
measures must be visible to those in a position to react to the feedback provided, and
– crucially – to the creative and customer-facing staff.

COURSE OBJECTIVES AND
BENEFITS

This workshop will consider in detail how to identify what matters to your organisation,
and therefore what “delivering value” means for your IT team. It gives participants a
practical overview of how to identify what measures to use to inform decisions and
behaviour at all levels; how to go about getting them in place; and how to make sure
they are visible - and therefore applied.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND:

Those in roles such as: Programme Manager, Head of Software Engineering Process
Group, Head of Project Office, Supplier Agreement Manager, Value Assurance Manager
and others in similar roles

BENEFITS OF ATTENDING:

This workshop offers a basic introduction for managers interested in developing and
implementing an effective strategy for the Lean management of information systems.

PRICE:

‘Early Bird’ Price: £440 + VAT until 17 October, thereafter £550+VAT
