oil is a progr'am that However YOll def ine it, Bct..t~~ti will has a major impact on your chapter and it.s ability to accompl ish the goals and desires for the coming year. Without mot iVc.\t ing new members to become immed iatel y involved in chapter activities, there is a big possibi'llty that they ~'ion'tbe around ne:<t year. Without giving your current members new opport.unities for grm'itl-., r iendsh ip , f and personal satisfaction, they wi 11 lose interest and st.op participating.
One of the indicators of the health of a Jaycee chapter is growth. However, growth alone can be misleading. If you have a chc\pter of 100 members, and you ar'e on 1 y act ivat ing ~:;Ol. of your member's, you wi 11 have a ~~Ot.: retent ion rate, and will have to to recruit 50 new members during the year lose, not even just to replace the 50 that. you will considering growt.h of the chapter. If the same Chapter has an Activation Plan to get members involved, and can improve you will be in better shape to the retention rate to 751., your commun ity, and wi 1 1 be better accomp 1 ish the goa I sin If th is chapter ab 1 e to trai n 1 eaders for fut.ure years. recruits 50 members as before, with the 751. retention, you have a heal thy chapter that is GROWING instead of wi 11 standing still. A major goal of your chapter st10ul AL.WAYS be to d recruit new members to your organization. If we truly bel ieve in the val ue of the .Jaycees, we wi 11 want to bring new members so that they can have the rewards of belonging. New blood prevents burnout of the same people over and over, and gives future leaders to the organization. But along with this goal you must have a plan to ACTIVATE your members. If he or she was WOt Lh the effortto br'ing into this organization the (s)he is worth the effort it. t.akes to get him involved. The Florida Jaycees have some exciting plans to help you in getting your members involved. We want you to util ize the tools of the US Jaycees -- Springboard, Degrees of Jaycees, etc., and we want to help you understand these programs. We are instituting on a st.ate level t.he SPOKE and SPARK PLUG Progrc:~ms to recogn ize ~oLlr members em a State 1 evel for becom ing invol ved with t.he Jaycees and to give them the stroke to help them continue and stay excited.

This guide is divided into sections to help you in your Act ivat ion Pr'ogram. As with any program of f ered by the Florida .Jaycees, this Activation Guide is merely a tool for YOLlr LIse as and when it fits into your part icu 1ar needs. This Guide is intended to hel p you tai lor a pl an to your chapter's special needs. Use what you can when you can, but please -- USE IT I I I If you have any questins or recommendations to improve th s Act vat ion GLI ide, or if YOLI have a program idea that works for your chapter, please contact us, as this is YOUR program.

SUCCESSFUL

ORIENTATIONS

The new member orientation is a training program. Your chapter owes it to new members to inform them of our organization so that they can better understand what they paid their money for. Since it is also a requirement for the SPRINGBOARD program, your chapter should hold regular orientation programs. There are, of course, many ways to make your orientation program successful. Many chapters hold theirs 30 minutes before a regular meeting to insure better participation. Some schedule their orientations on non-meeting nights a~d provide refreshments. Some ever. call them "Ne''; Member ~1eetinys" and only allow new members to attend. Usually, the more nO~21 the idea, the more effective the pro~ram. District Directors and Regional Directors are usually excellent people to present the program because they are knowledgable, sometimes entertaining and it gives your new members instant exposure to a st~te Officer. The program should not ordinarily last more than a half hour. If it does, you may be feeding the new mer~ber too much too soon. The attached schedule is a sugg2stea guide for your orientation. The U.S. Jaycees SPRINGBOARD Chairman's Guide also provides sample agendas for your use.

The president will explain your local chapter structure. a small amount of its history and how these new individuals with their particular needs and interests fit into your chapter. This should be kept brief. but emphasize it as an essential part of 'making the new member welcome and involved. TABLE TWO:

Your Community Development Vice President will be located at this table. To add a little more class. you might want to have all of his/her chairmen at the table. The Community Development Vice President introduces each of the chairmen who explain BRIEFLY their particular projects. The member is then teamed up with one or more of the project chairmen to determine whether he/she wants to be 'on a committee or work on the project in some capacity. In this way. the members not only understand what your chapter is doing to improve the community. they are committed to involvement. TABLE THREE:

Your Individual Development Vice President will be located at table three with his/her program chairmen. The Individual Development Vice President introduces the members to the chairmen and each chairman explains to the members how their program relates to the members and the chapter. The members are solicited to get involved in at least one Individual Development program and are also initiated into the Springboard. Speak-Up and Degrees of Jaycees programs. Their names are also placed on the wall charts for these programs and they are given wallet cards for their persJnal records. This table completes the Jaycee Triangle Concept and has the members involved in each area. TABLE FOUR:

the new members fit into your local chapter and how they represent them and their ideas. The member is then assigned a particular Director and a team. That Director then takes the member aside and gathers personal information, acquaints the member with other team members and reassures the new member that the Director is there to help out at any time. As one can readily see, the key to this program is the institution of a people management system or approach in your local chapter. It is not as difficult as it sounds. All it takes is a commitment from the people who were elected to serve and a little training to ensure that everyone is playing on the same team. Your Directors become the Personnel Directors in the chapter. Each member is assigned to a Personnel Director, who, in turn, will get toknow each member of his/her team and assist those members throughout the year. The Director's duties are to orient each team member, as well as get them involved in projects of interest. The Director also guides the new memb~rs into'personal development programs and helps themdevelopment pride in your chapter. This could become the most important office in your chapter because each Personnel Director has the opportunity to affect the lives of Jaycees more than any other single officer. Run correctly, this program will produce Jaycees that become involved and acheive personal growth. It will be a rewarding experience for the member, the Personnel Director and the chapter.

FDR ACT I

PROGRAMS

ION

The US Jaycees offer two programs to help activate your members. By using the programs in your chapter you can help your members take part in what the Jaycees have to offer, and can recognize their efforts with certificates, patches, pins, etc. These programs are: SPRINGBQARD DEGREES OF JAYCEES

The following pages show what the requirements are for comp 1et ion of the programs. The Spr 1 ngboard Program 13 a 90-day program, and is a self-contained program. The Degrees of .Jaycees Program is des igned to be used through the Jaycee's career as he grows from new Jaycee to involvement in the State Organiz~tion.

The Springboard Program is monitored by the US Jaycees, and they wi 11 send the new Jaycee the member survey to compl ete. The process starts when the US Jaycees receive the name of a new member. Completing Springboard also means that your Jaycee is now a First Degree Jaycee. Completing Springboard exempts him from having to complete the First Degree. You can recognize your Jaycees by awarding Springboard Patches and Certificates when they complete the requirements. You can also recognize the outstanding Spr ingboard .Jaycee of the G!uat~t.er/ Year' . Recogn it ion anLl awards serve as excellent activation tools with thlS program. SPRINGBOARD PROGRAM

The Springboard program is designed to activate and orient the new member within ninety (90) days by providing an environment in which the new member meets Jaycees, works with Jaycees and learns about the AArvices, programming and other opportunities available through the Jaycees. It is not a difficult program - it's simple. But its simplicity should not overshadow its importance.

The following are the five (5) requirements ninety (90) days of joining.

of the Springboard

program and must be completed

within

1.

Attend fifty percent (50%) of the chapter's regular membera meetings.

The intent of this requirement is to get the new member "rubbing elbows" and socializing with other Jaycees. Attendance of at least half of the regular membership meetings the chapter conducts during the new members' time it takes to complete the Springboard program fulfills this requirement.

2.

Attend a Springboard

orientation.

The intent of this requirement is to acquaint the new member with the basics of our organization. This can be a U.S. Jaycees pre-prepared presentation or cover the basic history and accomplishments of your chapter to expand the new members' understanding of the Jaycee movement.

3.

Help work on or participate In one of the following: a. A Community Development project b. Attend an Individual Development program c. A Management Development project
The intent of this requirement is to acquaint the new member with activities of the chapter through direct involvement. This is when a new member really begins to feel the true Jaycee spirit, for they are either doing something positive for the chapter, community or for them self.

4.

Share the Jaycee experience by completing one of the following: a. Bring a prospective Jaycee to a chapter activity. b. Assist In recruiting a new member.
The intent of this requirement is obvious. Our organization is for sharing! Let's educate our new members and involve them in spreading the Jaycee movement -their spouse, neighbors and friends are all welcome.

5.

Complete and return the Springboard

member survey to The United States Jaycees.

This requirement is vital to your organization. The Springboard member survey which is sent to each new member in the Springboard magazine, will provide the leadership of The U.S. Jaycees with demographic information to assist in identifying the make-up of the membership of your state organization and your national organization. This information will greatly enhance the development and funding of future programs. Upon the receipt of the Springboard member survey, the completion of Springboard will be recorded on the new member's personal file in The U.S. Jaycees computer. A record of each new member c~rtifyjng for Springboard will be supplied to your chapter via monthly chapter roster reports. When new members certify their successful completion of the Springboard program, they are automatically certified for the completion of Degree one in the Degrees of Jaycees program. At that time, your chapter should recognize each new Jaycee with either a Springboard certificate or patch and the Degrees of Jayc88s ct:/llticate with the first ckgr8e seal embossou in gJid. For complete in/ormation on now to conouct your chopier's Springboard program, order the Springboard Program Chairman's Guida (catalog no. 5043-0). Also, tl1eft: is a Springboard wallch'H1. certillca[e and patch available in The U.S. Jaycees Sales Catalog. DEGREES OF JAYCEES PROGRAM

The new Degrees of Jaycees program is an excellent member activation program and a very effective "management tool" lor your chapter. The key to this program is the involvement of your chapter, as it is in all Jaycee management programs. Degrees of Jaycees is designed to provide leadership training to individual members and your chapter by encouraging member participation. Numerous benefits will result from the Degrees of Jaycees program: 1) Each member who completes the Degrees 01Jaycees program will have truly achieved the goals of "leadership training;" and 2) Your chapter will have developed a resource of trained leaders, which in turn will atfectthe impact your chapter has on its members and community.

Phuea
1. 2. 3.

There are ten (10) degree Involvement

levels divided

into three (3) phases

in the Degrees

01 Jaycees

program.

The three (3) phases

are:

Experience Leadership The involvement phase covers the first three degrees and has been carefully planned to provide new Jaycees with opportunities to experience orientation, training, community awareness and sharing Jaycees. The experience phase covers degrees four, five and six and is designed to let Jaycees use their experiences in the first phase to develop skills in the areas of activation; action and sharing Jaycees. The leadership phase covers the last four degrees and has been planned to provide Jaycees with the lIexibility to exercise the leadership skills gained in the first two phases through training and sharing Jaycees.

R"

Because the Degrees 01 Jaycees is a leadership development process, participants must complete one degree at a time before wOf"king on the next degree level. There are no retroactive items. Therefore, past performance in any qualifying level does not count toward completion of the Degrees of Jaycees program. Also, any requirement achieved for a degree can not be repeated lor achievement in another degree.

CerUflcation
In the Degrees program, participants must certify the completion of each degree with The U.S. Jaycees. To certify, the participants must complete a Degrees of Jaycees Certification Form alter each degree achieved and obtain the chapter president's president must then mail the Certification Form to: The U.S. Jaycees.
