Three basic types of shooting drills are presented in this chapter: free throw drills,
perimeter shooting drills, and post shooting drills. Several different layup drills can be
found in the Pre-practice, Warmup, and Transition chapters. Shooting drills that are
more specific to particular offenses can be found in the Offense chapter as they are
more often used in that portion of practice.

I like the shooting segment of practice to be focused specifically on proper shooting

mechanics, getting each player several shot repetitions, and on conditioning so that
shots are taken under fatigue that simulates game conditions.

Free Throw Drills

I usually have players shoot no more than 2 free throws at a time, since it is rare that 2
consecutive free throws are ever attempted in a game. The only exception is scrimmage
situations. Rather than stand and watch the action in scrimmages, substitutes must
make 10 free throws at a free hoop. Then the can enter the scrimmage.
