What if it doesnt work?

While this type of therapy is usually very effective, sometimes other problems in the neck need to be addressed before a patient will respond to strengthening. Your doctor may consider the following if the MCU is not effective: o Instability-This means that the ligaments that hold your neck bones together may be injured or damaged. o Damaged neck joints-motor vehicle trauma and other injuries can sometimes damage the neck joints. o Irritated or pinched nerves in the neck-When the nerves are compressed in the neck, the irritation needs to be treated before someone can effectively strengthen. Its not uncommon to restart strengthening at a later date, once these problems are addressed. For more information, see www.hanoun.com or www.centenoclinic.com. To book an appointment, call:

WHEN YOU HAVE NECK PAIN, THE MUSCLES CAN BECOME WEAK. ONCE YOUR PAIN IS UNDER CONTROL, ITS TIME TO START STRENGTHENING.
The neck is a very complex structure. As a result, strengthening neck muscles can be difficult using traditional physical therapy. When the cervical spine gets weak, specific muscles usually lose strength. The MultiCervical Unit was designed to test all neck muscles, diagnose which are weak, and provide a detailed program to restore these muscles to their original strength. HOW CAN THE MCU HELP? Making specific neck muscles stronger can reduce your pain and allow your neck to become more resistant to flare-ups. This is the final stage of your rehabilitation and getting back to a more normal life. HOW DO I BEGIN? A therapist will perform your initial test. The machine will measure how much your neck moves (Range-of-Motion), the strength of specific muscles, and the amount of disability you experience because of your neck pain.

MCU stands for MultiCervical Unit

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT? MCU visits are scheduled twice a week and last about 30 minutes each. You may be sore after the first few visits. Your strength will be tested every 6-12 visits and you will be able to see your progress on graphs and charts.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO GET THESE MUSCLES BACK? The average length of the program is 12 weeks. A few patients can get their all of their strength back in 6 weeks and some take as long as 18 weeks. DO THE STRENGTH GAINS LAST? Yes, the vast majority of patients at 1 year follow-up both held their strength gains and pain relief. The best way to maintain your strength gains is to return to your normal activities. WHAT TYPE OF PAIN CAN BE TREATED WITH THE MCU? The MCU can treat: Neck pain Headaches Dizziness from the neck Upper back pain Arm numbness, tingling, burning

DOES INSURANCE COVER THE MCU? Yes, most insurance plans have coverage for this type of therapy. If you have an HMO plan, you may need to get additional authorization from your family doctor.
