Netbackup

Master Server:

Media Server:
Difference between Master and Media Server
The master is the one that contains your Netbackup Database. So it needs lots of disk space and some
power. It has the database that runs the schedules and keeps track of tape drives and other backup
devices. It also keeps track of media servers. (If it is a unix master - it can send all unix clients new
versions of the software)
A media server (which a master can also be a media server)
Does backups. It has tape drives or backup disk devices, and talks to clients, gets the data from them
and put the info onto the backup device. Does not need as much disk space on the actual server for the
netbackup software as a master. But does need a good network connection and some power. It also
sends to the master server the info on the files that it is backing up so the master can add that info to
the database.

Parts of the Catalog
Image Database
The image database contains subdirectories for each client that is backed up by NetBackup, including
the master server and any media servers. The image database is located at Program
Files\VERITAS\Netbackup\db\images and contains the following files:

Image files (files that store only backup set summary information)
Image .f files (files that store the detailed information of each file backup)

The image database is the largest part of the NetBackup catalog. It consumes about 99% of the total
space that is required for the NetBackup catalog. While most of the subdirectories are relatively small in
the NetBackup catalogs, \images can grow to hundreds of gigabytes. The image database on the master
server can grow too large to fit on a single tape. Image database growth depends on the number of
clients, policy schedules, and the amount of data that is backed up.

Disaster Recovery
Volume Any individual bit of media - tape, optical disk, etc.
Volume Pool A logical grouping of volumes to be used for a specific application. For instance, Oracle
backs up to a certain pool, the OS to a different pool, and product code to a third pool.
A volume pool is a group of media that is grouped together for use by a single application. The volume
pool is protected from access by other applications and users.
Volume Group A logical grouping of volumes based on physical location. Whereas the pool is used for
actual data, the group is used for administrative work. If you wanted to move all the volumes from one
robot to another, you can either move the volumes one at a time or, if they're all in the same group,
move the group.
