Objectives: I can convert a conditional statement to an if then statement. I can write the converse, inverse, and contrapositive of a conditional statement. I can distinguish inductive reasoning from deductive reasoning. I can work effectively in a group.

Groups: The teacher decides who will be in each group The teacher appoints the group officers A group has 3 members each of whom is an officer Leader: No member speaks unless recognized by the leader Ensures that each member contributes Ensures that each member is heard Recorder Produces the artifact that is the result of the activity Decides the content of the artifact Reporter Presents the results of the activity to the class Decides the content of the presentation

Lesson: A Half-Act Play Cast: Teacher: Miss Jones (Deja M. and Natalie) Leader: John (Jorrel and Kieth) Recorder: Mary (Deja Y. and Lexus) Reporter: Andy (Kevin and Alex B.) John: All right folks, lets get started. Our job is to fill out the first page of worksheet 2.2. [Mary and Andy now speak at the same time] Mary: I think someone should read the worksheet out loud and then we should discuss the answers. Andy: I think we should all read the worksheet silently and then discuss the answers. Miss Jones: You cant all speak at the same time. John, take control! John: Whats your idea, Mary? Mary: I think someone should read the worksheet out loud and then we should discuss the answers.

John: And your idea, Andy? Andy: I think we should all read the worksheet silently and then discuss the answers. John: Mary, you fill out the first four answers. Andy, you handle example 1, parts A and B. Ill do the negation and True False. Andy: Hey, you cant boss us around like that! Miss Jones: Yes he can. Hes the leader. When you are the leader you will get your chance. John has set up a plan. Now execute it. Mary: Im ready. A conditional statement has a hypothesis and a conclusion. The if part contains the hypothesis and the then part contains the conclusion. I underlined Steve is wearing shorts, and I circled it is warm outside. Andy: And I have my part. Part A should say, if an animal is a dog, then it has a tail. Part B should say,If two angles are congruent, then they have the same measure. In both sentences, everything

between if and then is underlined and everything after then is circled. John: And I have my part: The negation of a statement is the opposite of the original statement. To negate the house is orange we say the house is blue, since blue is the opposite of orange. To negate the water is cold, we say the water is hot. Mary: I dont think you should say the water is hot. Not cold is not the same thing as hot. Im going to record the water is not hot. John: You cant do that. Im the leader. Do as I say. Miss Jones: As recorder, Mary has the power to record the activity any way she chooses. I will grade her on what she writes. All right, Andy, its time for your report. Andy: A conditional statement is a statement with two parts, a hypothesis and a conclusion. You should underline Steve is wearing shorts and circle it is

warm outside. The if part contains the hypothesis and the then part contains the conclusion. In example 1, all dogs have tails becomes if an animal is a dog, then it has a tail; and if two angles are congruent, then they have the same measure. Underline everything from if to then, and circle everything after then. The negation of a statement is the opposite of the original statement. The negation of the house is orange is the house is not orange. Mary: Hey, he cant do that. I recorded the house is blue. Miss Jones: As the reporter, he can report any way he chooses. I will grade you on what you recorded. I will grade Andy on what he reports. Continue, Andy. Andy: The negation of the water is cold is the water is not cold. To prove that a conditional statement is false, you must show one counterexample.

Miss Jones: Thank you, Andy. Everything Andy said is correct. The word opposite to describe negation is poorly chosen by the author, because it is ambiguous. It is true that cold and hot are opposites and that orange and blue are opposites. To negate a statement, insert the word not appropriately and leave the rest of the terminology alone.
