Who was the client ?

The Swiss Railway Company (SBB) is the largest transportation company in Switzerland. About 28'000 employees assure the transportation of 275 million passengers and about 60 million tons of goods each year. The Division Infrastructure is a single business unit within the organizat ion of SBB. The division is responsible for the planning, construction and maintenance of the entire transportation network.

What was the primary goal of the project ?

The main purpose of the project Cockpit was to design and implement a management information system which specially allows the consolidation of key indicators. The project was activated by the board of management and was successfully realized (from conception to implementation) in four months. The formulation and implementation was mainly supported by the unit controller.

Why was the solution of QPR chosen ?

The QPR software solution to implement the management informati on system was in competition with the one of SAP. The decision was taken in favour of QPR Scorecard due to the following reasons: Rapid Implementation The implementation with SAP would have taken much more time according the estimation of the responsibles.

What was the main benefit of QPR Scorecard implementation ?

Easy integration The Swiss Railway Company implemented QPR Scorecard as an ASP solution. A complex, time intensive i ntegration in the existing ITenvironment could therefore be avoided. Furthermore, the fact that no hardware investments had to be made was an additional plus in their evaluation. Easy data import The relevant data from several sources could be easily calculated in an MS Access Database and exported into the Cockpit. Easy to use application After a short introduction all the 70 users coul d handle the application without having a deep technical understanding.

What was the main benefit of QPR Scorecard implementation ?

According the responsibles the following benefits occurred due the implementation of QPR Scorecard: The automatic data processing resulted in a enormous time saving. Before the implementation it was not possible to have the relevant management information in a standardized and aggregated format as rapid as now. The communication of the business units strategic goals improved the understanding of how peoples activities effect the overall result. The management by objectives approach strengthened the sense of responsibility for the overall results on every level in the organization. The main benefit resulted in a cultural change. Before implementation of the Cockpit the management tried to increase the performance s in optimizing the existing resources. After the introduction of the management information system, the improvement of the strategic goals based on better performances became first priority.

What are the next steps ?

The Swiss Railway Company plans to develop the Cockpit as follows: A regular adaptation and extension of the management information system is assured by a continuous release planning. Furthermore a stronger integration of the key indicators of the quality management into the Cockpit will be realized in the next release.
