what is p2p:

p2p stands for "peer to peer" and is just a term. it is mainly file-sharing. p2p
enables people
to share information faster, bypass censorship, and lower server load.
p2p technologies:
----------------
there are several p2p technologies/networks. i will discuss all the major ones:
|> download swarming

download swarming is a term usually used in gnutella-like networks that refers to
downloading
from more than one host at once. downloading from more than one host increases
download speeds
because you do not have the upload speed bottleneck. upload speed bottlenecks are
a problem
in almost all connections. isps usually give you blindingly-fast download speeds
and slow
upload speeds. if you can download at 500kbps you may only be able to upload at
200. if you
are trying to download from people who have the same upload speed you will only
reach a
download speed of 200kbps. with swarming you can reach your full 500kbs because
200*3=600.
if you had 3 hosts uploading at 200kbps you would be able to download at your
500kbps with no
problems. bittorrent utilizes this system very effectively and it is one of the
reasons why it
is so fast.
|> non-linear transfers

this refers to downloading a file in any order you like. let's say you are
downloading a 5kb
file and each kb is a chunk. in many systems such as http downloading you must
recieve chunk
1 before recieving chunk 2. in networks like bittorrent you can recieve chunk 5
before chunk 1.
if you had to recieve them in a linear order it would slow things down a lot.
|> linear transfers

non-non-linear transfers. you must recieve each part of the file in order.
|> peers
in a bittorrent network peers refers to anybody who is trying to download. in
other networks
it usually means anybody on the network.
|> seeds
you usually only see this term in bittorrent networks. a seed is somebody who has
all the parts
of the file and is distributing the file.
|> leechers
in any network this means somebody who has not uploaded their fair share for their
downloaded
amount. they recieve lower priorities in downloads. in limewire they are called
"freeloaders".
this can also refer to a person who shares a low amount of files or none.
|> nodes
depending on the networks this can mean many different things. this usually means
anybody on the
network.
|> supernodes
this is a computer that controls communications between nodes.
|> leafs
this term usually related to the gnutella network and refers to somebody who is
not
an ultrapeer.
|> ultrapeer
this is the supernode or brains of the gnutella network. this computer connects
you to other
leafs. they usually recieve higher download rates.
|> tracker
this keeps track os all the seeds, leechers, and peers on a bittorrent file. they
are currently
developing a trackerless system.
|> gnutella network

the gnutella network utilizes download swarming, non-linear transfers, leafs, and
ultrapeers.
there is gnutella2 and gnutella1. popular applications for gnutella are shareaza,
bearshare,
limewire, and kazaa. this network has medium fed activity and it seems to be
staying the same.
it uses magnet links which rely on the sha1 hash of a file.
|> fasttrack network

the fasttrack network is what kazaa primarily uses. this was hopping with feds at
one point but
they are leaving. the network uses kzhashes to keep track of files.
|> bittorrent network

this network utilizes download swarming, trackers, seeders, peers, leechers, non-
linear
transfers, and is much faster than traditional networks. it is currently fed
paradise so watch
out. the bittorrent network is unlike any other. i won't go in-depth to it but i
may create
a follow-up article about it. common clients include the original bittorrent,
shareaza, abc,
azereus, and tons more.
p2p programs
------------
|> shareaza [shareaza.sourceforge.net]

i give this program a 4/5. it handles ed2k, gnutella 1, gnutella 2, and
bittorrent. it is open
source and contains no adware, spyware, or bundled software. the bittorrent
support is ok
but i wouldn't use it as your bittorrent client. it also comes with built in bitzi
support.
this software is easy to use but has a good advanced mode for power users. best of
all,
it's free!
|> bearshare [bearshare.com]

i give this a 3/5. it has a nice artist promotion program and uses gnutella 2. it
comes with
spyware, adware, and bundled software in the free version. it has an easy to use
interface that
is good for people who don't understand where the water goes when you flush the
toilet. it
has built in bitzi support. nagging register screen.
|> limewire [limewire.com]

i give this a 3/5. it supports gnutella 2. this software is more advanced than
bearshare and has
a very cool look. it comes with spyware, adware, and bundled software despite what
they say.
it is fairly easy to use. nagging register screen.
|> the original bit torrent [bittorrent.com]

i give this a conditional 5/5. if you are just a casual user who never does more
than 1
download at a time this is easy, slick, and simple. advanced users should not use
this.
it is spyware free, adware free, and contains no bundled software.
|> abc (another bittorrent client)

i give this a 3/5. it is open source and contains no malware or bundled software.
it has an
advanced interface but doesn't look very pretty.
|> azereus
i give this a 4/5. it has a very nice logo and interface. it can range from simple
to complex
depending on how you customize it.
|> kazaa [kazaa.com]

i give this a 1/5. this software is loaded with junk you don't want and it is
impossible to
uninstall. this software is absolutely worthless and is lucky to be considered
software.
|> mercora
i give this a 4/5. it uses p2p networks to deliver live legal streaming radio to
users.
you can't download music with this but it is a great tool.
finding files/torrents
----------------------
for finding file and torrents there are several services available. most people
will be
satisfied with just typing the file name in their client and hitting search.
for magnet links and things like that check out bitzi.com or google.com just type
the name in
bitzi and in google do something along the lines of "hack tv" "magnet link".
finding torrents is changing every day. currently there are lots of sites that
index them.
bittorrent.com is starting a search engine. you might want to check isohunt.com
but it'll
be shut down soon. just go to google and type:
"broken floppy" "torrent"
or:
"broken floppy torrent"
there are many torrent indexers which i will not list simply because there are too
many.
if you use any gnutella app just type in the name of the file and filter it to
torrent files.
staying safe on p2p
------------------
p2p is swarming with viruses, corrupted files, feds, and other nasty things. i
will talk about
the methods of keeping yourself safe.
everybody should download peerguardian2. this software can use any block lists to
block
the riaa, mpaa, fbi, and more. they have some good lists but i recommend going to
google and
typing in "dangerous ips" or "misleading ips" or "block list" or "ip blacklist" or
something
along those lines.
if you want to insure you don't get sued by the riaa/mpaa don't share any files
that are
copyrighted. it's a simple fix. you can also block their ips and things of that
matter.
before you download a file do a bitzi lookup on them. in most clients just right
click on the
file in your search box and then click "bitzi lookup". i don't download anything
if it doesn't
have a good rating unless i really need it. if you download a file and it doesn't
have much
information about it on bitzi please add it. you can make your submissions
anonymous if you
don't log in. we have created a bitsociety called "hacking files" where you can
rate hacking
files you are looking for/get.

charities they have claimed to donate to.
we ask you to immediately shut down these sites and keep a back-up copy for any
federal agencies
that may be investigating such as the united states secret service. we do keep a

the letters that we send so it can be verified that you recieved this information.
if you refuse or neglect to shut down these sites in a reasonable about of time

could be charged with encouraging, inhibiting, and knowingly allowing illegal
activities
