National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week by spending an afternoon experiencing life in the State of Poverty.

Experience the pressures that push families into making difficult decisions. Meet and interact with other community leaders working to address real community needs in the Northwoods. Alumni of previous simulations can volunteer as staffers.

Business owners, educators, members of the media, community service organization members, law enforcement officers, health care professionals, employees of government agencies, elected officials and public servants, community leaders, any individual interested in learning more about their community.

Pre-registration is required by Monday, October 31, 2011. Individuals must participate in whole event. Space is limited, register early. Call (715) 365-2750 to register.
Since the recession, more people are experiencing challenges in meeting basic needs such as: Employment: Between May of 2008 and May of 2010, the unemployment rate in Oneida County increased from 4.9% to 8.6%. Food security: There has been a 43% increase in the number of ongoing Food Share caseloads, and a 105% increase in the total Food Share expenditures in Oneida County between 2008 and 2010. Utilities: Between 2007 and 2010, Wisconsin Public Service reports nearly a 60% increase in the number of utility disconnects in the Rhinelander, Minocqua, Eagle River and Tomahawk service area. Housing: Forty-nine of 270 households (18%) responding to a survey at the Rhinelander Area Food Pantry reported they were homeless or had been at risk of being homeless in the past year. Of the 152 individuals in these households, 60 were children under the age of 18.
