Benjamin Rajadurai Mr. Russo AP US History 8 September 2011 Summer Essay Chapters 1-4 ! The Spanish,French,and British all had different imperial goals in North America.

They all came with the basic goal of making money but they also had unique things that they wanted to accomplish in the New World. Britain wanted to set up colonies, France came to trade and not settle, and Spain wanted to convert the natives to Catholicism. The Spanish,French,and British each had very different goals in the new world of North America. ! After Christopher Columbus, The Spanish were the rst to reach North America.

Part of Columbus reasoning to try to explore a potential new route to Asia was that he would be able to bring Catholicism to Asia. After wars with the Muslims and the Crusade,one of Spains main goals was to send Christian missionaries everywhere. Their main reason for nancing Columbus trip was for religious purposes. Starting off their main goal was to convert Muslims from Islam but it soon changed when they realized the amount of gold available. After that they turned into an army. The missions they built became forts. Many conquistadores, Spanish leaders who led armies into battle to defeat the Indian tribes that ruled the land below the Rio Grande. Their rush for gold led to the colonization of cities in Latin America. ! Most of Frances early efforts to gain land in North America were relatively late In

Their main purpose for coming to North America was to make money and trade with the Indians in Canada. They originally did not have major plans to make a large settlement. They built trading posts to trade goods with the Indians. They arrived late to North America and were not able to do much except establish a few trading posts in Canada and a settlement in South Carolina. ! Englands main goals in North America was to nd a place to colonize. During the

time of colonization. They sent a group led by John Smith to settle the new world. He landed in Virginia and set up Jamestown. Despite early troubles the colony prospered and grew into a reasonably large community. Later on when England was in religious tumult and different groups were being persecuted. These groups, like the Puritans and Quakers, were forced out of England and asked for a charter to go to North America. They landed in New England and Pennsylvania respectively. Both were founded on strong ideals and prospered. ! All three countries left their imprint on North America. The Spanish came with the

goal of converting the native Indians but left after destroying the Indian tribes in Latin America and taking their gold. The French came with the intent of settling colonies but only managed to build a few trading posts. The English came with the intent of colonizing and managed to built permanent settlements all along the Eastern coast of North America. The Spanish,French,and British each had very different goals in the new world of North America but only England really accomplished what they came for.
