64 HKUST Counseling &

Development

Preface

Physiological decline is the norm, but psychological development can

be lifelong.

From the prime of life at about 30 years of age, our body functions
deteriorate gradually toward old age. At around age 75: our blood pH
regulation will drop to only 20%; taste buds to 30%; oxygen absorption
during exercise to 40%; brain weight, spinal nerve cells, lung volume all
to roughly 60%; cardiac blood output at rest and kidney filtering rate
to 70%; blood circulation for the brain to 80%; and nerve transmission
speed to 90%.

Preface:

It is comforting to know that mental or spiritual maturation is not restricted by

physical aging. Even though our physical being is gradually decaying, yet our
spiritual being is renewed day after day.** Outwardly we may suffer wear and tear,
but inwardly we can grow from strength to strength. There are companions who
walk along our lifelong lane, so we will not become discouraged. Our eyeballs have
blind spots; yet our growing mental insight can reach a farther and wider horizon.
We are not alone; what we cannot see by ourselves, our traveling partners can reveal
for us with love and understanding.

Dr. Isaac Tam

Associate Director &
Head of Student Life Center,
Student Affairs Office

Psychological growth, however, can span the whole life. For example,
Erik Erikson's theory of psychosocial development outlines eight themes that
emerge with prominence at different stages of life: from mistrust to trust,
from shame and doubt to autonomy, from guilt to initiative, from inferiority
to industry, from role confusion to identity, from isolation to intimacy, from
stagnation to generativity, and from despair to ego integrity.* At our unique
baselines, we grow toward our personalized maturity.

As interpersonal mirrors, caring counselors (peer or professional) can help

us to reflect upon our real selves and visualize our true images. Indeed,
a trouble shared is a trouble halved; and a blessing shared is a blessing
doubled!
Let's make psychological and spiritual development our lifelong norm!

A growth could base on revenues for

a company, on economy for a country,

on literatures for an academic realm,
and also, on self-understanding for
an individual. In a personal mental
basis, to grow means to develop selfunderstanding personally, to remove
inside hurdles consciously, and to
generate solutions to life problems
accordingly. I, however, have not clearly
realized the importance of personal
mental growth until I faced seemingly
unsolvable life problems and came to
SAO to seek help from a counselor.
The fact about life is that a person
seldom experiences a real development
unless he/she comes upon with a truly
difficult problem. That is to say, it is
always hurt to learn.

Mr. F

But the learning hurt could be much

more off-set with the help from
counselors because the learning process
is well-embodied in a series of positively
energizing conversations, a guided selfreflection from memories recalled by
myself, with an introduction of a toolkit
of useful mental tools. In this process,
I am not just a silent receiver, but an
active producer, who continuously
produces a more realistic picture of my
own paradigm, a lens through which I
view myself and things around myself.
The paradigm, or the lens, consists of a
great number of assumptions, mostly
unrecognized. To name a few: I will
lose the image of a competent person
if I seek for help from others; I should
be blamed if I am not a competent
person; what others value should
overweigh what I value; and the most
primarily, the assumption that what I see
as truth is the truth.

During counseling process, I have been

taught to view the lens, or the combination
of all those assumptions from another
persons angle. It takes time and practice
to get familiar and skilful with this tool,
but the tool works. It helps me to reveal
those unrecognized assumptions which
gradually formulate since I was raised as a
child by my family and started to receive
school education. It is not a quick-fix, but an
endurable and reliable inside friend, with
whom I could find a more realistic self.
I know I have just started the journey, one
that has been unconsciously undergone for
around 20 years. It is never too late to initiate
this intrapersonal journey, a journey to our
root of life.

Opening

Lester

Two years ago, I was a year one student who got lost and depressed. I

disliked people around me. I hated my family and my jongmates. I did not
want to do anything and failed two core subjects in that semester. I tried to
transfer to other majors in order to restart my university life. As expected,
the transfer was not successful because of my poor results. I was not able
to quit because my family was poor. I could not get into sleep easily. I quit
the society cabinet finally. I really needed someones help and so I went to
counseling. Counseling is really common in western nations but it seems to
be abnormal in Hong Kong. After two years, I really change my perspective
of seeing things around me. Everything has two sides and its a pity that you
only focus on the dark sides but neglect the beauties. Through counseling, I
explore myself and understand myself more. At the beginning, I really relied
on my counselor and wanted her to plan everything for me. However, rather
than that, the counselor helps me figure out my problems and my needs.
This is because the problem returns if you do not dig deeper for the cause.
She is the one who walks along with me instead of pulling me to walk. She
raises me up to face the challenges rather than protecting me. I really feel
relieved and being charged up after each counseling session. If you have
something to share but do not want to let your friend or relatives know, you
may try counseling. You may find a new way out!!

Challenges may exist every day either you have hard times in hall life, studies or

personal relation. Some people are always there to listen to, share with and spend
time with you. They are the counselors from SAO. Having regular appointments
with them, I find this useful. This is a simple way to express your feeling, clarify your
doubts and laugh out loud.
In my two years of studies, I faced many difficulties. I was challenged by my tutor
about my class participation in one of the courses. When I answered the questions,
I always raised my hands first, looked at her, as a signal that I could answer her
questions, and marked down how many questions that I had answered. No matter
how hard I tried to make her understand that I did answer so many questions, she
still did not believe me. I felt extremely frustrated. I valued the course. Even though
I am not a talented student, I found the answers before the lessons. My hard work
was questioned by this stupid tutor. She played favoritism. It was clear that I was
not in her team. It was so hard to believe, in HKUST, such thing does exist. My
counselor guided me, comforted me and taught me that I could not change how
she felt. This is impossible. Therefore, I had to prove that I was capable and I did
not make up my class participation. At the end of the course, I was appreciated by
my classmates. I did not need her appreciation. I got my satisfactory grade for the
course and I learnt something more than the course content throughout this course.

A lot of emotional problems is like a battle against myself. I always have

to challenge myself whether I have really done something wrong or it
was the people around me who made me feel that I was wrong. These
are two different things that we have to know. Even though I have gone
through the horrible course, I still face many problems. For example, I
have some unpleasant project experience, I had faith in the project at
the beginning because we got to know each other and contributed our
work. However, life is not easy. In the first half of the project, nearly half
of the group mates did not show up nor finish any work that I assigned to
them. As a project leader, I felt disappointed. Being an adult, they should
be responsible. They should not expect me to baby-sit them. They should
take the initiative. Maybe I was asking too much. My counselor taught me
not to force them to do anything because I just couldnt. This worked. The
free riders showed up in the meeting. Though they did not make useful
contributions, it was a good start.
Talking to the counselors is just like talking to your friends. The
appointments are informal and confidential. No one knows what you say
but only you and the counselors. Feel free to make appointments online at
SAO website.

Counseling since Oct, 2009

Bachelor of Computer Science
and Engineering (CSIE),Year 2
School of Engineering

I didnt choose my major but my

major chose me. This is the answer

for those who asked me why I study
engineering in HKUST. When I was
in middle school, I wanted to be a
politician to make a better world. I
didnt want to be silent and integrated
myself with computers in a laboratory.
Under no circumstances should I
become a nerd sitting in front of
the machines and debugging the
programs.

It is very hard for me to survive in the first

semester. First, the curriculum is wellpacked. They put a floodgate of contents
in courses and there are strong connections
between them. If I missed any key concept
in a course, my whole study progress
would be stuck in the middle. Second, my
classmates are experienced programmers
and they regard homework as games.
Given weekly programming assignment, I
had to spend my whole weekend to finish
it which only took my classmates half an
hour. Worse still, I have zero interest about
programming.
Even I spared no pains to study
programming, my mid-term result was still
disappointing. At that moment, frustration
made me fail to find the way out. I was
depressed for two weeks and did nothing.
With my unstable emotion, I need a person
to guide me and give me professional
opinions, something that my peers or senior
students may not be quite competent to
offer me. Once upon a time, one of my
classmates in HLTH001 class introduced me
to meet counselor in SAO, then my U-life
started a little change.

I started meeting with my counselor,

Ms Sliver Chan, on a weekly basis. I shared
my frustration, my background and
everything about U-life (with her). After
sharing my own things, she was devoted
to give her comments and suggestions to
me about how to deal with those difficult
situations. I have met her for one and a half
year. Now, I would say talking to counselor
is one of the most effective ways to selfexploration. I am a stubborn man, I prone to
solve all the problems on my own. It made
myself easily get into deadlock. My counselor
always shed a whole new way to see things
and I can hurdle those predicaments.
In your university life, you will face different
situations. Sometimes its good and
sometimes its bad. If you are confronting
some inexplicable changes right now, dont
panic! Find someone who can give you
support. Asking for help doesnt mean you
are weak. It means you commit yourself to
get over challenges.

Exploring

Discovering
Self

I am very thankful to have been introduced to the help and support provided by my counselor.
Having many problems such as lacking confidence and easily being discouraged, I didnt find
settling in HKUST easy. After having some confrontations with another student who continued
to verbally insult me, one of my friends made the recommendation to visit a counselor, and
from doing so I received many ideas and insights for dealing with difficult and complicated
situations, and noted certain characteristics about myself which I wasnt aware of.
After many sessions, my personality has noticeably changed. One of the biggest inadequacies
that I had was my lack of confidence and ability to stand up for myself. But now I am more
confident and able to cooperate with others more. Also, I was able to enjoy my life more in
HKUST. Not everything is short and easy. It takes multiple sessions and a long relationship for
the visits to be effective, but it worths.

BC

I highly recommend anyone feeling happy or not, social or lonely, academically well or
otherwise, to talk to a counselor. This is definitely helpful for dealing with stress and other
emotional difficulties, especially in an environment where the competition is fierce and the
workload is heavy.
Thank you so much for your help.

Year 1, Civil and

Structural Engineering

As an MSc student, I only have one-year study in

Voice of
Kind Hearts

HKUST, and it is exactly the same time that I stay in

Peer Counselor Training Program.

Peer Counselors first came into my life via nonlocal postgraduate student help desk in August,
2010. However, I had no knowledge about this
group till late October, 2010, when I participated in
a sharing program for Mainland students.

Amazing!! This is the word that I can use to express my experience of being a Peer

Counselor in HKUST. I am happy that I can be the Peer Counselor in HKUST in my first year
of study.
Being a Peer Counselor, I was offered a lot of opportunities to explore and discover myself,
which has also built up my self-confidence and enhance my view on my life. I joined
the activities organized by the Counseling & Development Service and also helped in
organizing activities. The most memorable activity that I had was my involvement in
organizing the Hall Night for students living in halls. That was an excellent experience
because I could work together in a team to design games, to prepare food and to hold
sharing discussion for the participants. But the most important value that I have gained is to
share our kindness and bring happiness to people around us.
Four years of university study ends very fast. Honestly speaking, study is not the only
component in our university life. On the other hand, there are other values and elements
that we should include in our life too. In the Peer Counselor Program, I learned that there
are lots of chances around us and it totally depends on how we identify and grab those
opportunities. Therefore, we shouldnt limit ourselves to certain boundaries. I also learned
the attitude of being positive-minded in our daily life because this will help people around
us too! This has motivated me and let me enjoy every challenge in my life.
Once again, its extremely my great pleasure to be a Peer Counselor. Although this is only a
one-year program, I strongly believe our spirit as the Peer Counselor will not fade eternally.
I will still continue to share, love, show encouragement as well as bring more happiness to
my friends and students in HKUST!

Previously, I was a registered volunteer in Mainland

and accumulated more than 500 service hours in
the last four years. Peer Counselors is a voluntary
group, but it concerns more on peer issues, or in
other words, our issues.

Tony

In fact, we are currently at a stage between

youth and adult. We may be influenced by
various positive and negative factors while
lacking sufficient ability to get through.
Hence, we can know these issues and learn
from them by joining the Peer Counselor
Training Program, and more importantly,
help others to do so.
To illustrate, we have outreach activities to
enhance teamwork. We have Mental Health
First Aid course to enlarge exposure, and
we have Peer Counselors projects to enjoy
university life.
If I can choose one word to conclude my
one-year Peer Counselors experience, I
believe it is SHARING. We share our past
experience, our current thoughts, and our
future targets.
I will graduate from HKUST this year.
Though my stay in Peer Counselor is short, I
appreciate all the people I met here.

Under the PC program, I am glad to

serve as a voluntary Peer Counselor

for students around me. Other than
attending regular meetings to strengthen
my bonding with other PCs, I was
further trained by professional student
counselors to promote a caring spirit for
schoolmates.

King Ting Twinnie Yung

Year 2
BBA (Marketing & Economics)

Through the training process, it

enhanced my basic helping skills, my
understanding on mental health through
a 12-hour Mental Health First Aid Training
Course, emotional management skill
and management skill on interpersonal
relationships. For example, there are
course materials, in-class demonstration
and in-class practices to reinforce my
understanding on certain theories.

Other than serving customers at the Love

is All Around book booth during Healthy
Living Week, I had a chance to contribute
in the Love is All Around Week. In order
to encourage students in the examination
period, we distributed free warm drinks at
the booth. Other PCs and I had also helped
to sell cookies for Caritas La Vie Bakery
and raised money for World Vision at the
counter. This helped us spread a caring
message to members in HKUST.

I enjoyed the sense of success that I had

when my peers became happy again
after chatting with me. Their thankful
smiles encouraged me to carry on the
caring mission. For me, being a PC not
just helped peers around me, but also
shaped me with the quality of a patient
listener and an active helper.

Besides, through chatting with peers

who encountered negative emotions,
I could share their burden and provide
positive energy for them. These were the
good chances for me to demonstrate the
skills I learnt. It is also a way to enrich my
counseling experience.
