Technology with added value The largest wastewater treatment plant in the world relies on FDT Technology for device integration
Singapore is no stranger to showcase projects. Be it a spectacular skyscraper or a gigantic ferris wheel, Singapore is known for its bold and daring undertakings. The latest flagship project in the smallest tiger economy in Southeast Asia focuses on the area of water, waste water, environmental protection and sustainability. The summer of this year heralded the opening of the Changi Water Reclamation Plant, a waste water reclamation plant that boasts a unique, trendsetting concept. The technology installed is cutting-edge, with an FDTbased asset management system overseeing 10,000 instruments of all makes and kinds in a consistent, uniform and extremely effective manner. The "Changi Water Reclamation Plant (CWRP)" is the world's largest wastewater treatment plant and the centerpiece of Singapore's project to construct a deep tunnel sewerage system (DTSS) - a scheme unparalleled anywhere in the world. On June 23, 2009, the wastewater treatment plant of the national water agency, PUB, was officially opened. The plant itself was constructed for the government by the international project consultant CH2M Hill Singapore. Located close to the airport, the completed, compact, covered plant, which deploys the latest in cutting-edge technology, is designed for a capacity of 2.4 million cubic meters per day equivalent to the volume of 960 Olympic swimming pools. What is revolutionary about this plant is that an innovative concept of water treatment means that every single drop of water leaving the CWRP can be reused. High-tech processes controlled by the most modern automation engineering technology make this possible. Architecture of the distributed control system All the information from field PA instruments like pressure transmitters, temperature transmitters, level transmitters and positioners is routed to the 600 field network interface panels (FNI) via PA links and couplers, which can cover distances of up to 2,600 meters. Drives, analytical instruments, flowmeters and actuators are connected via Profibus DP via Sekopia connectors and OLMs. From the fieldbus network, information is transmitted to the 49Nos of Programmable Logic Controllers which are located in air-conditioned rooms in various parts of the plant. These controllers, which are the heart of the plant, provide all process control and communicate via the control network, Ethernet TCP/IP and a redundant fiber optic ring with the FDT server for asset management and SCADA I/O servers in various systems.

CWRP - Control System Architecture

Device Type Manager (DTM) The device-specific software component is known as the DTM. It can be integrated in an engineering tool or a system environment. The DTM maps the configuration, diagnostics and other functions of the device. The software knows the possibilities and limits of the device and contains all the dialogues with the user as well as all the graphic displays. One further advantage is that device-specific documentation can be created per DTM. Asset management Field devices and fieldbus network The following instruments are at work in the plant: 500 magnetic flowmeters 400 thermal mass flowmeters 400 pressure/DP/submersile transmitters 140 radar and ultrasonic transmitters 50 optical TSS transmitters 40 dissolved oxygen analyzers 100 temperature transmitters 5000 electric actuators 400 pneumatic actuators 400 variable speed drives 100 motor control centers 600 switches, samplers, and approximately 100 PROFIBUS masters Challenges for asset management The question of asset management presented the decision-makers with serious challenges, as every field device manufacturer makes different tools available for calibration. For end users this means that they have to be familiar with a plethora of tools that are expensive to maintain and operate. Furthermore, no real-time information is available to service staff for maintenance and repair management. The situation is further compounded when different systems or communication protocols operate in parallel. The solution FDT ultimately presented a solution for integrated and efficient asset management. The open and fieldbus-independent concept presents unforeseen opportunities. This is made possible by advanced functions that are stored as active software components in the DTMs. The FDT standard forms the basis to integrated, information-oriented solutions that cover every level of the automation pyramid from field devices and the MES level to the ERP systems of a business. FDT allows openness and interoperability of field devices and systems for engineering, diagnosis and asset management tasks alike. Standardized fieldbus protocols guarantee communication between intelligent field devices and the higher-order systems. FDT FDT defines the interface between the vendor of the field devices and the engineering tool of the distributed control system, but does not affect the field devices themselves. The technology enjoys a high degree of acceptance in many industry sectors. The open technology allows the integration of a wide range of products, such as sensors, valves, drives, low-voltage switch gears, etc. The product manufacturers are responsible for the information provided by the field devices via the DTM. The cross-vendor solution is supported by many leading manufacturers of instrumentation and control systems. requirements Given the magnitude and complexity of the project, the FDT asset management system had to meet a number of specific requirements: Client/Server architecture Support for TCP/IP, Profibus & HART protocols Project structure (network/plant), compliant with ISA S88 specification Comprehensive user & session management Activity logging and reporting The data captured must be transmitted online to CMMS for preparation and planning Import/export function for new projects Instrument search function (network & plant view) Integrated information DNR Process Solutions, a supplier of tailor-made automation solutions in Singapore, provided the solution. The company was actively supported by ifak system in Magdeburg, Germany. The two partners worked together to develop the Field Intelligence (FI) FDT-based asset management system for the wastewater treatment plant in Singapore, which has to meet incredibly strict requirements and objectives. For the first time ever, the software has a client/server architecture. In this way, up to 10 users can simultaneously access the desired information from any location via the Internet. The system facilitates remote configuration, diagnostics and supervision of all devices that are linked to open communication protocols such as Profibus or HART. The data can be saved in a central maintenance management system. On the basis of

Editorial
Dear reader,
The last quarter reflects a whirlwind of FDT representation. Our managing director, Glenn Schulz and I have crisscrossed the world to meet the many requests to talk about the terrific progress of the FDT standard. As I write this, I am on a plane returning from the Multaqa event in Doha, Qatar where I presented a paper on the advancement of the FDT standard to more than 200 attendees. The week prior I was delighted to speak at the European FDT End Users conference in Antwerp to more than 70 attendees. Add to that speaking and press engagements in Houston; Brazil; twice in Canada; twice in Japan; Singapore; Netherlands; and Nrnberg, Germany and you get a sense of the intense interest in FDT. My thanks to our talented regional marketing organizations for coordinating all of these activities. While I was frequenting the airport, others were making great progress on the update to the FDT standard. Our project team is on track for a release of the draft specification to the membership in the March timeframe. Our recent developers conference showcased the new development environment, branded FDTExpress, which allows rapid generation of DTM for the updated standard using .NET. The excitement that this is creating in the development community is a compliment to the vision and leadership of our architecture and specification team. I look forward to 2010 when we will see the implementation of the updated standard that ensures backward compatibility with current DTMs. Mark your calendar for the annual FDT Group Assembly meeting on Friday, April 16, 2010 in Frankfurt, Germany. All members are invited and encouraged to attend as the formal business of the FDT Group is voted upon at this meeting. We have timed the meeting to just precede Hanover Fair in order to make it cost effective for you to attend. A detailed agenda is forthcoming. In this newsletter, you will find an update of our activities with the emerging FDI standard. Much progress has been made and more recently, all of the major DCS players have joined the effort. The dynamics of these developments warrants this timely article that describes how the FDI standard will interoperate with FDT and bring some long overdue secondary standards to the industry. As the Wallraf family settles in for treasured family time during the Christmas and New Year holidays, I wish you and your family a wonderful and safe holiday season. Enjoy reading!

operational findings with regard to the availability and utilization of the individual assets in real time, the system helps boost the efficiency of the plant. The asset management system successfully overcame the challenges and passed tests with flying colors. In the Changi Water Treatment Plant, the largest wastewater treatment plant in the world, it continuously, uniformly and costeffectively manages some 10,000 field devices from a wide range of manufacturers. The key technology of the solution is FDT - a technology that offers real added value. This article is based on a presentation made by Jane Goh, former chief engineer (Monitoring and Control System) at CWRP (Changi Water Reclamation Plant) in Singapore at an event of the FDT Group. The mega-project at a glance It took 15 years from the initial idea to commissioning in June 2009. Capacity: 800,000 cubic meters of wastewater per day in the 1st development stage. When fully constructed, the plant will be able to handle 2.4 million cubic meters per day. One pump station in the new plant is as high as a 25-story building. Project scope: CWRP in Changi $3.65 billion Over 350 domestic and international suppliers. Multi-award-winning environmentally friendly, sustainable concept. For the first time ever, a water treatment plant has been installed on the roof of a sewage treatment plant. Only one third the footprint of conventional plants. By gradually dismantling the three existing sewage treatment plants, densely populated Singapore gains valuable land for building, covering a space equivalent to 190 football pitches. Optimum efficiency thanks to size and centralization. Critical part of a sustainable development. Together with the existing plants, the new water treatment plant safeguards a third of Singapore's drinking water supply. One more step towards self-sufficiency and less dependency on water supply from neighbors. I

Summary
Changi Water Reclamation Plant

The FDI (Field Device Integration) moniker has garnered more attention in the press in recent months and with good reason. There has been significant progress in the last year and in the last month - several new key players have joined the endeavor. Lets take a look at what the buzz is all about and how it compliments FDT. The history

assist in turning the itm concept into a viable standard. The standard became known as FDI (Field Device Interface). Current status While earlier efforts fell significantly short of announced milestones, the ECT has made significant progress in the last year toward the publication of the FDI standard based on the itm concept. The architecture describes an FDI Package that consists of the EDDL binary, business logic, and a graphical interface. The FDI package will be directly usable on an FDT Frame or, as the FDI standard further describes, a client/server architecture that makes use of OPC/UA. The draft standard is due to be released in mid to late 2010. While the FDI standard is a significant deliverable, the major DCS manufacturers began to discuss other requirement to make the standard viable. In November of 2009 ABB, Emerson, Endress+Hauser, Honeywell, Invensys, Siemens, and Yokogawa announced that they will join the ECT to broaden the financial support and scope of the FDI efforts. Secondary standardization The addition of the DCS companies to the FDI efforts promises to bring focus and resolution on some nagging issues when applying EDDL, especially in the context of FDI. While EDDL is a common, text based description of a device, the text description is normally converted to a binary DD before being shipped with the device. Unfortunately, the format of the binary DD is different for each process fieldbus even though they originate from the common EDDL language. The DCS members of FDI have made it a high priority to harmonize the binary DD through secondary standards and tools. The FDT Group, at the request of our Executive Committee and Board of Directors, strongly urged the harmonization of the binary DDs, so we welcome to the DCS companies to assist in these efforts. The role of FDT Even in the earliest discussions of FDT joining the ECT, it was clear that the scope of FDI was centered in the interests of the process industry members of the FDT organization and offered limited direct benefit to our factory automation

Certification update

In early 2003, the three major process industry fieldbus organizations: Fieldbus Foundation, HART, and Profibus started a collaboration known as ECT (EDDL Cooperation Team) to enhance and advance the EDDL (Electronic Device Description Language) which at the time offered a limited data visualization and user interface. In late 2004 OPC joined the ECT to further their mutual interests. The FDT organization became involved in the future of the ECT when Professor Bender of itm published a whitepaper that roughly described a framework for combining the best of FDT and EDDL. After much vetting of the itm paper and in-depth discussions with the ECT, the FDT Group became an active member of the ECT in mid 2007 to

members. Perhaps this contrast was enhanced when the DCS companies joined the FDI efforts. However, FDT as a standard brings together multiple industry verticals and all applicable networks so it is essential that we maintain a leadership role in FDI to ensure the broad applicability of FDT in unifying other industry standards, including FDI. The FDT Group is represented on the ECT management team by Glenn Schulz, Managing Director of the FDT Group and Tetsuo "Ted" Takeuchi (Yokogawa), the Vice President of Technology of the FDT Group. Nestor Camino (Invensys) heads the FDT technical delegation in the ECT team and is closely supported by Suriya Selvaraj (Yokogawa), the FDT Chairman of Test and Certification. Other FDT members are active in the technical working groups. The FDT Group is technically contributing across the breadth of the FDI standard but particular emphasis has been placed on our expertise in the area of the graphical user interface and our communications topology. Recently, this activity has been framed to ensure that the resulting FDI package can not only run in the FDI client/server environment but also be fully supported in an FDT based frame. These

efforts have the technical experts from the FDI team and the FDT 2.0 specification team working closely together to drive out the details. FDI on an FDT frame While all of the technical dust hasnt settled, we can provide an early view of how an FDI package will run on an FDT frame. The FDI package (see figure) consists of the binary DD (including a device description, business logic, and descriptive user interface definition) and a so called UIP (user interface plug-in). The components of this FDI package will not be visible to the end user but are essential to describing the interaction with the FDT frame. The FDI package will plug into an FDT frame through the use of a DTM made for that purpose (see figure). This DTM processes the binary DD using the standard software created for that purpose by the FDI organization. The UIP part of the FDI package is the same as the FDT 2.0 UIP by design so this functions the same way that a normal DTM would. Finally, the business logic is a further abstraction of existing FDT functionality that is processed as it would be in a DTM. As you might

expect, the data model will be harmonized so it too is directly supported by the FDT 2.0 standard. The DTM that processes any FDI package will be available as a standard component from the FDT Group. Next steps The FDI standard is on a solid march for release in 2010. The recent broadening of the scope to include harmonization of the binary DDs and the supporting tools has not yet been firmly calendarized but the project managers are assigned and are pulling together resources and drawing up their Gantt charts. We expect that the timelines will reflect the financial and technical support that has been committed by the DCS members to ensure a timely conclusion. Watch for updates in the early part of 2010. The future of FDT FDI brings important standardization in the implementation and deployment of EDDL based applications. The FDT standard will make direct use of this FDI package to bring a standard method for incorporating EDDL in FDT. Add to this the broader capability of FDT to support the dozens of factory automation networks and the tens of thousands of devices that

are not supported by EDDL, we can see that the role of FDT as a standard that brings together other industry standards in a homogenous environment takes another important step forward in the industry. The FDT Group is clearly committed to ensuring the success of this important industry collaboration and we will continue to work to ensure that the supporters and users of the FDT standard directly benefit from this effort. If you have any questions or suggestions, please directly contact our Managing Director, Glenn Schulz, at md@fdtgroup.org. I

FDT support hotline available in China The Chinese Subsidiary of M&M Software GmbH will host a technical support hotline for developers from FDT member companies on behalf of FDT Group as of 2010. Following the growing demand for FDT Technology consulting, the FDT Group decided to set up a hotline specifically dedicated for China. The FDT Hotline provides support on FDT Technology related issues via email and phone, especially to smaller companies that do not have large development groups. The service will be available from 9am until 5pm Beijing Time. The Hotline will provide services such as receiving technical questions through email and phone, setting up an issue database. This Hotline is an additional service to the already existing Technology Forum that is available on the FDT Group SharePoint server. It's a separate area within the SharePoint server where member companies can discuss development related issues as well as sharing experiences. The forum is supervised by the Technical Support Line in Europe. In combination with differential pressure producing flow elements such as orifice plates, the EJX110 differential pressure transmitter is widely used to meter flow rate of liquids, gases and steam. The transmitter often is connected to the flow element through relatively narrow impulse lines, which in the case of liquid flow can clog or freeze. Advanced diagnostic methods are applied to detect when clogging or freezing occurs to alert the maintenance staff before the measurement fails by generating a proactive maintenance indicator in the DTM device status window. Impulse Line Blocking Detection is also available in the Foundation Fieldbus version of the EJX110 and EJX910 (multivariable) differential pressure transmitter. chair, Ian Verhappen, CAP as the new chairman to carry on with the work

As a consequence of a number of discussions at the ISA 2009 Conference and Exhibition, the ISA103 standards committee has seen significant changes most importantly the number of End Users has increased significantly. We took advantage of the ballot to increase the membership of the committee by threefold while retaining the requirement of having good representation of the various interest groups that will be affected by the final approved standard. One of the changes in the ballot was to elect former ISA Standards & Practices Vice President, and Canadian IEC 65E

started by Ahmad Zahedi who due to work pressures unfortunately had to pass the torch to him.

The ISA103 committee is working to adopt the approved IEC 62453 standard as a recognized American National Standard through ISA in the upcoming year. The process is fully defined by ISA and will have the benefit of ISAs experience in developing and adopting standards to provide the team with the tools and procedures to make this happen in a timely manner. Because we will be adopting a globally accepted standard, we anticipate that the team will be able to take full advantage of web based tools and teleconferences to help us with our work in reviewing and if necessary revising the document to be consistent with industry practices in North America, which can be as simple as using Imperial units of measurement. The committee will start its work early in 2010 at which time we will develop a project plan compatible with peoples available time and our target objective of completing our work this year if possible. The recent announcement regarding the FDI development activity provides even more incentive for us to finish our work in a timely manner so we can be prepared for the next maintenance cycle of this standard when FDI will likely be proposed in 2010. FDT certification
The FDT Group Certification Office delivered again many certificates over the past year. Year after year the number of companies with certified devices increases significantly. Currently, 43 different companies delivering certified DTMs for their products. This is an increase of 30 percent over the same period last year. These 43 companies deliver in total over 2300 devices that come with a DTM! The complete range of devices with certified DTMs can be found on the FDT Group website under the following link: http://www.fdtgroup.org/ en/certified-devices.html. We encourage all end users to require certified products from their suppliers and to verify the certificates on our website. We strongly recommend field device manufacturers to always certify their new deviceDTMs! We are convinced that this important part of the FDT quality process provides remarkable user benefits in terms of reliable and trouble free plant operation. In the future, BASF Nederland will prefer to only purchase field devices with a certified DTM, states Ferry Stofberg, Automation Engineer at BASF, Meern, Nederland. I

PACTwareTM Live Training

Manufacturer-Independent Device Operation in Process Automation In November 2009, the PACTware Consortium introduced a new Live Training concept in four German centres of process automation. The PACTware Live Training took place in Hamburg, Halle, Frankfurt/Hoechst and Marl.

The half-day event consisted of workshops facilitating the direct communication between the participants and the hosting PACTware member companies. The experts from eleven well-known companies in process automation demonstrated how to make device operation more efficient by means of the universal PACTware operator interface. The main focus of the events was the practical benefit of device operation with the most commonly used FDT frame application, PACTware. The workshops under the headings commissioning, operation and maintenance showed application examples in live operation by using a multi-vendor devices wall. Demonstrations showed to the participants how their daily work can be considerably facilitated and speeded up by using just one single tool for all communication and field devices, be it HART, PROFIBUS or FOUNDATION Fieldbus protocol. The attendees obtained detailed information in functions and scope of services of PACTware. I

TREBING & HIMSTEDT

PROFIBUS Monitoring with FDT Parallel Fieldbus and Field Device Management minimizes Commissioning and Maintenance Efforts

Trebing & Himstedts new CommDTM PROFIBUS DP-V1 for the xEPI 2 enables the display of PROFIBUS diagnosis information in FDT frame applications. Thus, it is now possible to operate Condition Monitoring of field devices AND of PROFIBUS networks at the same time. The intelligent xEPI 2 not only provides the Ethernet-based interface for central device access but also collects valuable diagnosis information on network and stations. In clearly arranged designs the CommDTM shows status, malfunctions and diagnosis messages, a Live List and bus and error statistics. The new telegram logger quickly detects communication errors during device

configuration and an integrated link to the xEPI 2 website allows plant-wide PROFIBUS monitoring with automatic email alert. Here, the tags and descriptions can now be automatically imported from the engineering data of the FDT frame. I
