reddie Mercury was born Farookh Bulsara ro Persian parents on 5 September I946. His birthplace rvasthe island of Zanzibar, off the eastcoastofAfrica. \\hen he was eight, he was sent to school in Bombay, St Peter's Engiish board.ins schooljusr ouaide dre ciry. Afrer finishing at Sr Peters he went back to his family's flat in Zanzibar, but when he was 18 he was uprootedagain.In 1964,the Bulsaras fled to England from civil unrest in Zanzlbar. Their new home was a semi-detached house in the drab London suburb of Feltham. a far cry from the exotic lands of Freddie'syouth. But the Sr.r'inging were 60s an excitingtime in Britain. Freddie had ahvays enjoyed arr, and in 1966he beganto attend Ealing art school. He was coming under the influence of the new music sceneand was intrigued byJimi Hendrix. He had an unfocuseddesireto perform, but hadn't yet found the musicianswith whom to form a band. But that was soon to change.In 1968, a physics student at London University's
nowhere fast. For a rvhile Freddie sang with a group called Sour Milk Sea, and when they broke up he set up his owrr band. Wreckage. Thar also didn't lasr long. However, Freddie was srill hanging with the members of Smile. out
