> Laws to protect national security will still be in place post-ISA: DPM

UALA LUMPUR: The absence of the Internal Security Act after its repeal would not mean that people will be free to say or do what they want, without regard for national interest and security. Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin yesterday warned that even post-ISA, action can and will be taken against anyone who threatens national security. Just because there is no ISA, it does not mean that anyone may freely do things which disregard the interests of the nation, he told a press conference after launching the Makkal Sakti party convention. He may say it is his right, but if he threatens the rights of others, there are laws which will apply to his actions, said Muhyidddin. Nobody is above the law. If anyone stirs up trouble or commits an act which presents a threat to national security, action will be taken in accordance with the existing laws. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak had on Thursday night announced the move to repeal the ISA, and replace it with two other laws which provide significantly

shorter detention periods. Other reforms announced were the repeal of the Banishment Act and three Emergency proclamations, and reviews of the Restricted Residence Act, the Printing Presses and Publications Act, and police powers to regulate public assemblies. Muhyiddin said the decision to repeal the ISA was made after much thought and consideration, and in the interests of safeguarding the peoples right as per the Federal Constitution. Meanwhile, asked to comment on allegations by an online portal that Bangladeshi workers were being given citizenship in exchange for votes for BN, Muhyiddin said citizenship is not so easily given away. Questioning the credibility of the sources cited by the portal, Muhyiddin denied the allegations as untrue, saying the granting of citizenship to a foreigner is a long and stringent process which takes many years. To ask for foreigners to vote for us (BN) would make us look very desperate, he quipped, adding that even if Bangladeshis were to be given ballots, they probably would not even know who they are voting for. Muhyiddin slammed Kota Shah Alam assemblyman M. Manoharan for his Facebook comment that he

Everything we have accepted as part of our heritage, they want to throw away, the Umno deputy president said. They have no respect for history, and do not value what belongs to the people. That perhaps gives an indication of their true colours, he added. Said Manoharan in his Facebook

posting last week: I distributed many DAP flags today in my constituency. I refused to fly the Malaysian flag because it looks more BN than Malaysian. He apologised for the statement later. Earlier, in addressing some 1,000 Makkal Sakti members, Muhyiddin urged the party to touch the hearts of the Indian community to keep the growing support for BN. Even if it is a small gesture, touching the hearts of the people will

keep BN at the top of their minds as leaders who helped them in small but significant ways, said Muhyiddin who later received a memorandum from party president Datuk R. S. Thanenthiran, listing the problems of the Indian community. Thanenthiran pledged in his speech the party will work hard to win the support of Indians through its 87,000 members across the country if the BN continues to listen and act upon the communitys grouses.

Singapore comes under pressure

SINGAPORE: Singapore is coming under mounting pressure to ease political restrictions after Malaysia unveiled steps to abolish tough security laws and ease media and protest regulations. Human rights and opposition groups say Singapore needs to keep up with the times and repeal the Internal Security Act (ISA), which allows for detention without trial and is seen by critics as an instrument to stifle dissent. In a surprise move, Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak said last week his government would scrap the ISA and ease other laws perceived as curbs on civil liberties, including annual newspaper licensing. But Singapore insists the ISA, which was used against leftists in the past and suspected Islamic extremists in recent years, remains relevant and that media regulations are needed to preserve social cohesion. The city-states longest-held ISA detainee was Chia Thye Poh, a former Socialist Party MP who was held for 23 years from 1966 to 1989, followed by nine more years of effective house arrest. Even now, all protests outside a designated freespeech zone where speakers must register with authorities in advance still require a police permit. The ISA was originally designed to fight communist insurgents in the 1960s in British-ruled Malaya, which included modern-day Malaysia and Singapore. Singapore became independent in 1965 after being ejected from the Malaysian federation, but both countries retained the ISA. Najib said Malaysia will introduce new legislation retaining some preventive detention powers but for shorter periods and subject to more court oversight. In a way Najib is taking the cue from civil society groups in his country, said Sinapan Samydorai, director for Southeast Asian affairs at Think Centre, a Singapore-based political and civil rights campaign group. If Malaysia is opening up, then I think they are moving ahead. Its also time for Singapore to move ahead. Last week, Singapore authorities disclosed that three suspected Islamist militants were being held under the ISA after they were repatriated to the citystate. Two belonged to the Southeast Asia-based Jemaah Islamiyah terrorist network and the third is a member of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front which is waging an insurgency in southern Philippines. In a statement on Friday, the Ministry of Home Affairs said the ISA had been used sparingly and was aimed at fighting threats of subversion, racial and religious extremism ... espionage and terrorism, not political dissent. No person has ever been detained only for their political beliefs, it said. Samydorai said the results of parliamentary elections in May and the presidential poll in August, when the ruling Peoples Action Party recorded its worst-ever showings, showed that Singaporeans, especially the young, want greater political freedom. Governments in Asia are realising that young people cannot tolerate nondemocratic practices anymore. Government critics have been emboldened by the polls results and independent political websites are starting to buzz with calls for the ISAs abolition. Singapore will be making a quantum leap towards improving its human rights record if it decides to imitate Malaysia in abolishing the ISA, wrote Ann Xavier in The Online Citizen. A first world country like Singapore should not be keeping third world laws to repress its political opponents. Critics say the ISA is not Singapores only repressive legislation. The mainstream media is tightly controlled, and opposition figures have on occasion been bankrupted in libel actions brought by senior government officials which bars them from being MPs or parliamentary candidates. Chee Soon Juan, who is secretary-general of the opposition Singapore Democratic Party and has been made insolvent for exactly that reason, said times demand that the ISA be repealed. Repressive laws that instil fear and stifle independent thinking have no place in the modern world. AFP

Strategy to counter negative perception

BY AARON NGUI
newsdesk@thesundaily.com

GEORGE TOWN: Barisan Nasional will implement an Advocate Defend Attack communications strategy to counter negative public perception. Gerakan president and state BN chairman Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon said the strategy would be adopted at all levels. He said the process of synchronising communication and publicity efforts among BN component parties was ongoing. Koh said at Gerakans annual general meeting yesterday that advocacy referred to explaining government transformation prog-

rammes and their progress; defence to countering baseless allegations and apologising if we cant explain; and attack to criticising, as there were so many things about which to criticise the state government. There are many ways to skin the cat, he said alluding to the Penang governments oft-repeated principles of Competency, Accountability and Transparency (CAT). Koh, who is minister in the Prime Ministers Department, said there were many issues BN could use in attack, but that any attempt should be made in an orderly fashion. We must back up our criticism with facts and logic so that the people have

confidence (in our arguments). In his speech, state Gerakan liaison committee chief Datuk Dr Teng Hock Nan compared Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng to a man who treated his girlfriend irresponsibly after courting her. He said Lim would blame the girls previous boyfriend when she told him she was pregnant. But the girlfriend says it is not the fault of the previous boyfriend as that was three years ago, he said, referring to 2008, when BN lost Penang to the Opposition. Teng called on Lim to take responsibility and not blame the federal government. Otherwise, it would mean he is not a good leader.

Quitting BN wont make a difference

> Gerakans fortunes will not change unless its leadership does: Ex-CC member
BY HIMANSHU BHATT
newsdesk@thesundaily.com

GEORGE TOWN: Former Gerakan central committee member Dr Choong Sim Poey said the partys dismal political fortunes will not change if it were to leave Barisan Nasional, unless its present leadership is significantly changed. The issue of leaving BN had been raised on many occasions when delegates debated on the partys unfulfilled proposals for key policy changes. These include the removal of the Internal Security Act, the Printing Presses and Publications Act and abuses of the New Economic Policy,

he said. There was a clear consensus that if the party were ever to leave the coalition, it would have to be based on a serious disagreement between Gerakan and BN on key policy changes, Choong said yesterday in reference to a reported revelation by Gerakan secretary-general Teng Chang Yeow on party president Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koons frustrated intention to take the party out of the BN in 2008. This was after his photograph was torn and stamped on during a press conference by Umno Bukit Bendera chief Datuk Ahmad Ismail. Choong said Gerakans situation

will not change unless a new leadership with a fresh outlook emerges, which is most unlikely, given the partys existing second rung leadership. He said many early members became disillusioned with whether Gerakan, touted as the conscience of the BN, could really play a meaningful role in the BN from the 90s. These members gradually drifted off or were purged to ensure there would be no rebels left to rock the Gerakan-Barisan partnership. Choong noted that the party had rejected more mundane issues such as seat allocations as being inappropriate reasons to leave the BN. However whenever disagreement over such major policy issues came to the crunch, the leadership continued to crumble before the Umno threat, he said.

For a better democracy

PEKAN: Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak said yesterday the Internal Security Act was being repealed in an effort to make Malaysia a better democracy. The prime minister said the move was possible now because of success in developing the nation, the increasing maturity of the public and greater awareness of human rights. It was not due to pressure from any quarter, he said at his Aidilfitri open house here attended by about 50,000 people. Najib said changes to the countrys laws were part of the political transformation that the government was carrying out from the aspect of human rights. The time has come for us to take another step forward not only in economics and education, but also in upholding democratic principles. He said the Barisan Nasional government would continue to champion the cause of the people in all aspects. Najib said Malaysias uniqueness must be preserved with multiracial harmony as the country surges ahead. Bernama

BY PAULINE WONG
newsdesk@thesundaily.com

PETALING JAYA: Four Malaysians were killed and 18 others injured in the bomb blasts that rocked the Sungai Golok border town in southern Thailand on Friday, the Malaysian consulate-general in Songkhla has confirmed. The dead are Wong Kai Sean, three, and his grandfather Hong Yep, 63, Foong Too Keh, 45, and Chan Yau Wing, 52. Among the injured, 12 have been discharged while the rest are reported to be in stable condition and receiving treatment at the Sungai Golok Hospital and Yala Hospital. A statement from the Foreign Ministry yesterday advised Malaysians to postpone all unessential travel to southern Thailand until the security situation normalises. The ministry also continues to monitor the developments through its

embassy and consulate-general and is liaising with Thai authorities to provide necessary assistance to all Malaysians involved, the statement read. The bombings was reportedly carried out at Charoen Khet Street, a popular entertainment spot. Bernama reported Sungai Golok deputy mayor Rusdi Che Omar as telling Malaysian journalists that the first bomb, mounted on a motorcycle, went off at 7.30pm Malaysian time in front of the Teochew Cultural Centre and caused many people to be injured. He said the second, also fixed to a motorcycle, exploded a few minutes later at a hotel nearby claiming the lives of Fong and the local and injuring many. He said the third blast happened at a food court packed with people in the vicinity of the second and the Wongs were the casualties. In KOTA BARU, emotions ran high as the bodies of the Wongs were brought home on Saturday. Kai Seans body was cremated in Bachok early yesterday, while the body of his grandfather will be buried at the Chinese cemetery in Bukit Cina, Kok Lanas here today.

Govt to focus on rising cost of living

IPOH: In drafting the 2012 budget, the government has taken several initiatives to address the rising cost of living, Second Finance Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Husni Hanadzlah said yesterday. He said the current rise in the cost of living was due to global instability, where in the context of food supply, demand and supply are not in balance. The rise is also due to the increase in the world population. To overcome this in Malaysia, the government has decided to include cost of living as part of the national agenda and national key result areas, Ahmad Husni said. In our context, the cost of living involves food supply, housing and public transport. The government has taken initiatives to find solutions to this issue, and they will be tabled with the 2012 budget, he told reporters after attending the Jelapang Baru Rukun Tetanggas Aidilfitri open house here. Ahmad Husni said several shortterm solutions in urgent areas and long-term solutions have also been lined up. On matters concerning public transport, for example, the government has given the green light for the construction of the Mass Rapid Transit for the convenience of people in the federal territories. Elsewhere, he said, the Land Public Transport Commission had been directed to study how the transport system can be improved, and to table its findings in the cabinet. Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR: PKR Youth members lodged a police report yesterday over several video clips released by a blogger which were linked to an alleged sex footage of opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. The latest video clips, believed to be retrieved from CCTV security cameras, showed a man who resembles Anwar with another man, apparently businessman Datuk Shazryl Eskay Abdullah, stepping out of a vehicle and walking into an elevator in a building where the former is said to have had a sexual escapade with a Chinese prostitute. About 10 PKR members, led by the youth wings deputy information chief Rozan Azen Mat Rasip arrived at the Dang Wangi district police headquarters at 1.30pm before lodging the report against blogger Papa Gomo

who posted the clips in papagomo. com. We want Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ismail Omar to come forward and make a statement saying the police are not involved in the release of these video clips. Umno should also do the same. If they can do that then it will clear the air because who else may possibly be capable of getting such footages, Rozan said. The police must investigate how such video clips were acquired by Papa Gomo. We also want the police to take action against the blogger for distributing pornographic material. We have lodged a report with the MCMC (Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission) on April 4 after the blogger went public with the video in his weblog but to date there has not been any action taken against him. Now he threatens to post more sequels to the video. Why was he not probed?

Press council can reduce pressure on media

KUALA LUMPUR: The proposed Malaysian Press Council (MPC) can help reduce pressure on the media, National Press Club (NPC) president Mokhtar Hussain said. He said yesterday the council would also be a channel for the media to present any proposal for greater media freedom. Mohktar said the establishment of a press council was timely owing to changes in the current media landscape with the internet as an alternative information source. Hence, the press should be given more freedom to play its role without fear and worry. In principle, the formation of a press council had been agreed by senior editors of leading newspapers and magazines. The MPC will likely be modelled after media councils in India and Britain to ensure that it will function effectively, Mohktar said, adding that their regulatory framework was being studied. We hope the media will be given more freedom of expression in conveying accurate and correct information to the public. Bernama

Three days after the victims disappeared, police discovered their highly decomposed bodies, wrapped in white dhoti and dumped in a canal at Vadipatti in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, about 150km from their home. Forensic reports revealed the victims were strangled with a dupatta (shawl) and smothered with pillows. GEORGE TOWN: The Asian Association of Open Universities (AAOU) Annual Conference will be held in Penang for the first time, from Sept 28 to Sept 30. Hosted by Wawasan Open University, the event will examine the benefits of partnerships and different business models in enhancing the quality of learning experience for open distance

learning (ODL). WOU vice-chancellor and CEO Prof Dr Wong Tat Meng said the annual conference would focus on various aspects of ODL, including culture and social changes; quality of education; business models and the role of partnership through ODL; and impact of technology and future trends. Themed Transforming Asia through Open Distance Learning, it will be attended by some 350 local and foreign delegates from 20 countries, including Japan, Korea, Mongolia, Iran,

Turkey, China, India and Pakistan to share research findings and technology innovations in ODL. Over the past several decades, higher education delivered through open distance learning has transformed communities in many parts of Asia, and its positive impacts on marginalised urban as well as remote communities have been well documented, he said. ODL institutions have evolved from ones primarily concerned with improving access, to

ones laying emphasis on the delivery of quality education, underpinned by good governance, well-developed quality assurance system and processes, as well as rigorous assessment systems, Wong said at a press conference at the WOU campus here. The event will be opened by Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin, while the closing ceremony will be officiated by Minister in the Prime Ministers Department Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon.

GEORGE TOWN: The Penang government is considering whether to call for a Request for Proposal (RFP) for the development of an integrated waterfront and seaport in George Town, where the Swettenham Pier is located. The area for the proposed project would cover over 14,000sq m, around the new cruise terminal complex which was belatedly completed in November 2009, at a cost of RM65 million by the federal government. It would include the old Swettenham Pier building as well as an extension, where a tourists arrival hall and a wharf for large ships and ferries are sited.

Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said that the RFP is being considered in order to efficiently and effectively operate the whole port, and transform it into an attractive and active commercial area. We want to see growth in that place, as well as have future planning and investments put into it, he said, expressing hope that it would boost tourism for the state. Lim stressed that much

more can be done for the pier, which is built on state land and currently overseen by two federal agencies the Penang Port Commission (PPC) and Penang Port Sdn Bhd (PPSB). While the PPC acts as a regulatory body under the Transport Ministry, PPSB operates the port as an entity under the Finance Ministry. Speaking at a press conference, Lim lamented that the port up till today has only been maintained with no significant development carried out. There is no water break built in the area, which could allow yachts to berth at the pier, he cited an example. Before the RFP is called, the state government would need to get views from the relevant authorities, including PPC and the Transport Ministry, he said. The project would complement a RM351 million dredging project funded by the Finance Ministry to deepen the northern section of the Penang Channel, which has been delayed for more than a year. The dredging, which involves deepening of the northern section of the Penang channel from 12m to 15m would take about 18 months to complete. It would enable large transhipments to use the Penang Port.

BN condent of retaking Selangor

> Survey shows swing in support among Malay and Indian voters
from the opposition. He said there must not be any internal bickering among and within component parties. Everyone must be willing to accept and support candidates chosen by the party leadership. Whoever the candidate, or whichever party he represents is not important. We must give our wholehearted support to ensure a Barisan win, he said. It is understood that the state BN leaders will meet soon, to come up with new strategies aimed at retaking Selangor in the coming general election. Selangor MCA chief Datuk Donald Lim Siang Chai urged the BNs top leadership to identify as soon as possible its candidates for constituencies where the coalition only has a 50% chance of winning. This is to give them enough time to serve the people and to gain exposure. If the candidates are only named three weeks before the polls, they may not have enough BY KONG SEE HOH

Build non-Muslim houses of worship

HUA Zong (Federation of Chinese Associations of Malaysia) president Tan Sri Pheng Yin Huah urged state governments to follow the cabinets decision to build non-Muslim houses of worship on reserve land in areas with a high number of nonMuslims. He said this will alleviate the problem of illegal sites, he said. According to a report in Nanyang Siang Pau yesterday, Pheng said there was not much progress made in resolving the problem despite the cabinet decision, and urged the state governments to collaborate with the federal government to show that the authorities can walk the talk. Since land allocation and use come under the state government, we hope state governments will cooperate with the federal government in this area. He lamented that although the cabinet decision was made a year ago, there has yet to be any follow-through action by state governments. On another note, Pheng welcomed Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razaks announcement on Thursday to repeal the Internal Security Act and the Banishment Act, and to review several other acts. He said the announcement demonstrated Najibs courage and decisiveness in carrying out reforms. He hoped that the prime minister would take steps to amend or abolish more laws that are no longer suitable, to make Malaysia a model democracy.

SELANGOR Barisan Nasional is confident of recapturing Selangor in the next general election and forming the state government, Oriental Daily News reported yesterday. A survey done by the coalition showed that there is a swing in support back to BN among Malay and Indian voters although the Chinese are still taking a wait-andsee attitude. A BN grassroots leader who spoke on condition of anonymity told the daily that the Selangor Barisan Nasional convention in Shah Alam on Saturday looked at BNs chances in the 56 state seats. It was revealed that the majority of seats still regarded as black (less than 50% chance of winning) are located in predominantly Chinese areas, and that of all seats traditionally given to MCA to contest, only one is categorised as white (no risk of losing), which is

Sungai Pelek. Even so, many leaders and even the prime minister in his speech (at the convention) believed that although the Chinese voters are taking the wait-and-see stand, things are looking up for the BN. They feel a further change in BN leaders attitudes would help win back the Chinese votes, said the grassroots leader. Apart from the opening address by Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak, who is Selangor BN chief, the question-and-answer session, as well as the winding-up by Najib, a meeting with the chiefs and deputy chiefs of the four state BN component parties was held behind closed doors. The main objective of the convention was to unite the component parties as the next general election draws near. Najib had emphasised that BN leaders should not clamour for party positions but focus their efforts on wresting back the state

time to make preparations, Sin Chew Daily quoted him as saying. The prime minister has already said we must field winnable candidates. But sometimes, the suitable candidates are not the division chiefs. This is among questions that have to be considered and resolved wisely. He said MCAs target in the next general election is to win half the number of seats it contests. Lim disclosed that MCA has proposed that both the federal and state governments build more Chinese primary schools in areas such as Puchong and Klang where there are a large number of Chinese. At the state BN convention, Lim urged the BNs top leadership to discipline leaders who make remarks that go against the BN spirit. He said Selangor MCA also urged the BN leadership to advise government-linked companies not to implement policies that will further burden the people.

US envoy links militants to Pakistan govt

ISLAMABAD: There is evidence linking the Pakistani government with the Taliban-allied Haqqani network of militants, the US ambassador in Islamabad said, blaming the group for last weeks siege in Kabul. In blunt comments broadcast by state-run Radio Pakistan on Saturday, ambassador Cameron Munter said: Let me tell you that the attack that took place in Kabul a few days ago that was the work of the Haqqani network ... There is evidence linking the Haqqani network to the Pakistan government. This is something that must stop, Munter said. His remarks follow a warning by US Defence Secretary Leon Panetta, who said after the Kabul attack in which rebels fired rockets at the US embassy and Nato headquarters, leaving 15 dead that the US would retaliate against Pakistan-based insurgents. The US has long urged Pakistan to take action against the Haqqani network and suspected the group had support within the Islamabad administration. But the public comments are a mark of strained ties between the fragile anti-terror allies, with relations fractious since the US raid on Pakistani soil that killed Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden in May. Asked to provide evidence of the link with the Pakistani government, Munter said only we believe that to be the case. Acknowledging that the past year had been tough, he urged joint action against terrorism and said that the United States and Pakistan were fundamentally on the same side. The Haqqani network is thought to have been behind a number of attacks in Afghanistan, where Nato plans a gradual withdrawal of troops after a gruelling 10-year war. Militants frequently cross the porous AfghanPakistani border. The key here is that this is going to take a real effort to work together, to identify who the enemy is, Munter said. Time and again weve urged the Pakistanis to exercise their influence over these attacks from the Haqqanis and weve made very little progress in that area, Defence Secretary Panetta said, a day after the Kabul siege. Im not going to talk about how were going to respond. Ill just let you know that were not going to allow these kinds of attacks to go on, he said. Pakistans foreign ministry condemned those remarks as out of line, saying that terrorism and militancy is a complex issue. AFP

Fierce clashes in Sirte

> Libyan NTC troops retreat from Gaddas hometown
SIRTE: Forces of the new Libyan regime were forced to retreat on Saturday after earlier pushing deeper into Sirte, hometown of ousted leader Muammar Gaddafi, in the deadliest of three days of fierce clashes. Rocket, sniper and heavy artillery fire left at least 24 National Transitional Council (NTC) fighters dead and more than 40 wounded, including a French freelance videographer. The situation at the roundabout is pitiful. There is no central command, we are retreating to regroup and re-enter again from three fronts, said AlDhahira Brigade commander Saleb Abu Shaala. Pro-Gaddafi forces in Sirte, the ousted leaders hometown, have put up stubborn resistance against thousands of former rebel fighters massed in and around the key town. Abu Shaala said the clashes erupted on Saturday and that Gaddafis forces used heavy artillery and rockets against them while the antiGaddafi forces hit back with Grad Rockets. Abdel Nasser al-Sheikh, of the Misrata Military Council, charged that the

Anti-Gadda ghters step on a carpet bearing a picture of Gadda at their position in the north of the besieged city of Bani Walid. pro-Gaddafi troops were firing from the Bin Hamal mosque. We cannot attack this place, he said. There is progress but snipers remain a problem, said fighter Fatha Allah, 18, returning from a frontline he said had moved closer to the coast. We reached up to the city centre but there are families there. Six hours after the fighting began, Nato warplanes flew overhead, while the roar of artillery fire faded after rebels broke past a key roundabout in the citys south, which was the scene of heavy fighting on Friday. But convoys of NTC fighters left Sirte again under rocket fire late Saturday, failing to secure their advances in what has proved a recurring pattern in seven months of conflict. Front-line fighters and commanders gave contrasting reports of their progress in Sirte, with men on the ground acknowledging they were facing a tough and well-trained enemy while those in charge downplayed the pockets of pro-Gaddafi resistance. We dont even have five percent of Sirte because we just go in and out, said Abdul Rauf al-Mansuri, one of those taking up arms for the new authorities. French freelance video journalist Olivier Sarbil was among the seriously wounded after he was struck by shrapnel He was evacuated to Misrata by helicopter for further medical attention. Commander Salem Jeha said there were at least 1,200 NTC armed vehicles and some 6,000 fighters, mostly from Misrata, deployed in the Sirte area to take on the die-hard Gaddafi loyalists. AFP

Blair paid secret visits to Gadda

LONDON: Former British prime minister Tony Blair made two private trips to see Muammar Gaddafi in the run-up to the release of the Lockerbie bomber, The Sunday Telegraph newspaper revealed. Blair, who left office in June 2007, used a Libyan regime jet to visit Gaddafi in June 2008 and April 2009, the broadsheet said, citing documents discovered in Tripoli since Gaddafi was ousted from power. Blair played a major role in trying to bring Gaddafi in from the cold in exchange for giving up his nuclear weapons programme and first visited him in March 2004 in what was dubbed the deal in the desert. A spokesman for Blair acknowledged that the visits took place and that the Libyans had raised the issue of Abdelbaset Ali Mohmet al-Megrahi but the former premier simply told them that it was a matter for the Scottish authorities.

Megrahi is the only man convicted over the December 1988 bombing of Pan Am flight 103, which killed 270 people, mostly Americans, when it exploded over the Scottish town of Lockerbie. Megrahi, who has terminal cancer, was said to be only three months from death when he was freed from a Scottish jail on compassionate grounds on Aug 20, 2009. The Telegraph disclosure is likely to add to pressure for Blair to make public the full extent of his dealings with Gaddafi since leaving Downing Street. The Sunday paper said that the documents showed that in both 2008 and 2009, Blair negotiated to fly to Tripoli from Sierra Leone in a jet provided by Gaddafi. The documents also showed that Blair had a further private meeting with Gaddafi in June 2010. AFP

B R I E F S ZOOS ALLOW ORANG UTANS TO SMOKE: ACTIVIST

JAKARTA: An activist said on Saturday that orang utans in many of Indonesias zoos were allowed to smoke as visitors could freely toss cigarettes to them without proper monitoring. Cigarettes are bad for orang utans health. We demand the zoos closely monitor the orang utans, Centre for Orang Utan Protection campaigner Hardi Baktiantoro told AFP. In Malaysia, an orang utan named Shirley that amused visitors by smoking cigarette butts thrown into her cage was being forced to go cold turkey after authorities seized the great ape from a staterun zoo last week. Glimmer of hope
> Suu Kyi sees positive change in Myanmar
YANGON: After decades of military rule, democracy champion Aung San Suu Kyi says there are finally signs of political change in Myanmar, but its long-suffering people are still far from real freedom. In an exclusive interview, the Nobel Peace Prize winner told AFP that the new government appears genuine in its desire for democratic reform, and said an Arab-style uprising is not the answer to the countrys problems. There have been changes, but I dont think were all free or completely free yet. Theres still quite a way to go, but I think there have been positive developments, the opposition leader said at her party offices in Yangon. Ive always said Im a cautious optimist and I remain a cautious optimist. I do believe that the president would like to bring about positive changes but how far hell be able to achieve what he wants to achieve is a question that we still need to examine. Myanmars junta held elections last year that were marred by widespread complaints of cheating, and in March announced it was handing power to a civilian government dominated by former military officers. In recent weeks, the new administration has shown signs of reaching out to critics including Suu Kyi, who met President Thein Sein last month in the highest level dialogue since her release in November from house arrest. The dissident who has won international acclaim for her peaceful resistance in the face of oppression, and has been compared to Indias independence hero Mahatma Gandhi for her adherence to non-violence said she did not want a popular revolt in Myanmar of the kind seen in Libya. What has to be done is a revolution of the spirit. Until attitudes change, until their (the authorities) perceptions of the problems which they have to handle change, there will not be real change, she said. Everybody knows that Libyas troubles are going to drag on for a long time. Even if they manage to clear out everybody from the old regime and establish a new government there are going to be so many problems the bitterness will remain, the wounds that will remain unhealed for so long, she said. Chinas might adds urgency to Taiwan arms calls

BEIJING/TAIPEI: Chinas growing military strength, from stealth jets to aircraft carriers and anti-satellite missiles, has shifted the balance of power in the Taiwan Strait to Beijings advantage, and this will not be materially affected by an imminent US arms deal with Taiwan. The duration of any potential conflict between China and Taiwan will be a matter of days, not weeks or months, analysts and experts say. The Obama administration is expected to notify formally Congress next week on an arms package including F-16 upgrades for the self-ruled island China claims as its own, but not the new fighters Taipei wanted. Beijing, meanwhile, has shown no sign of ending an arms build-up that is strategically focused on Taiwan, and analysts say the arms deal will do little to alter the balance. Chinas military advances have continued despite a warming of ties across the narrow Taiwan Strait that followed the election of Ma Ying-jeou as president of the democratic island in 2008, and his signing of landmark trade and economic pacts. Taiwans military can do little to disguise its unease. There have also been no signs of adjustments to military deployments facing our country, Taiwan Defence Minister Kao Hua-chu wrote in July in the foreword to its annual white paper. We must build forces that are as impregnable as a rock. The US Defence Departments annual assessment to Congress last month warned that China remains focused on developing the pre-requisite military capabilities to eventually settle the dispute on Beijings terms. Taiwan once held the military edge against a backward Chinese Peoples Liberation Army (PLA). Today, experts generally agree that in the event of conflict, Taiwan would have at most only a few days to hold off China and get help from outside, most likely the United States, if they were to stand any chance. No ones really asking the question, could Taiwan beat China in an all-out conflict, said Matt Durnin, a researcher with the World Security Institute. The question theyre asking is whether or not Taiwan could survive long enough in a conflict it would be able to recruit other countries to support it politically or militarily. Reuters

TAIPEI: More than 4,600 Taiwanese schoolchildren came together for a mass violin-playing session yesterday, breaking a world record that had stood for 86 years. Britain to introduce samesex marriage

BIRMINGHAM: The British government has drawn up plans to introduce same-sex civil marriages before the next election in 2015, Equalities Minister Lynne Featherstone said on Saturday. I am delighted to announce today that in March, this government will begin a formal consultation on how to implement equal civil marriage for same-sex couples, she told her Liberal Democrat partys annual conference in Birmingham, central England. And this would allow us to make any legislative changes necessary by the end of this parliament. Civil partnerships for same-sex couples were introduced in Britain in December 2005, giving them similar rights to married heterosexual couples. However, the partnerships cannot legally be referred to as marriages. I believe that to deny one group of people the same opportunities offered to another is not only discrimination, but is not fair, Featherstone said. The change is expected to win strong support among the Liberal Democrats, the junior partners in Conservative Prime Minister David Camerons coalition. But while Cameron is also said to back the plans, he could face opposition from traditionalist Conservatives, who believe marriage should only be between a man and a woman. Gay rights groups argue that maintaining a separation between marriage and civil partnerships perpetuates the notion that same-sex relationships are not as valid as those involving heterosexual couples. Although activists welcomed the new proposals, they questioned the delay in the consultation until March. Rights campaigner Peter Tatchell said: I am not convinced that there needs to be any consultation at all. The ban on same-sex marriage is homophobic discrimination and should be repealed. AFP

Obama to propose Buffett Tax

> People making more than a US$1 million a year to pay more
WASHINGTON: President Barack Obama, in a populist step designed to appeal to voters, will propose a Buffett Tax on people making more than US$1 million a year as part of his deficit recommendations to Congress today. Such a proposal, among suggestions to a congressional supercommittee expected to seek up to US$3 trillion (RM9 trillion) in deficit savings over 10 years, would appeal to his Democratic base ahead of the 2012 election. White House Communications Director Dan Pfeiffer said in a tweet on Saturday the tax would act as a kind of AMT (Alternative Minimum Tax) aimed at ensuring millionaires pay a minimum rate of tax that at least matches that of middleclass families. The Buffett Tax refers to billionaire US investor Warren Buffett, who wrote earlier this year that rich people like him often pay less in tax than those who work for them due to loopholes in the tax code, and can afford to pay more. Obama will lay out his recommendations in White House Rose Garden remarks at 10.30am (10.30pm in Malaysia) today and is expected to urge steps to raise tax revenue as well as cuts in government spending. Those could include reforms of the Medicare and Medicaid government healthcare programmes for elderly and poorer Americans. The White House has already said Obama will not recommend any changes to the popular Social Security federal retirement plan. Obama, who has been hammered in opinion polls over his handling of the faltering economy, wants to use his plan to counter Republican claims he is a tax-andspend liberal as he campaigns for reelection next year. Congress is at liberty to ignore his suggestions and Republicans, who control the US House of Representatives, have said that they will not agree to tax hikes. If the president pushes for tax increases that stand little chance of being passed by a divided Congress, it may help him blame lawmakers for thwarting his plans at a time when the publics opinion of Congress has touched record lows. But he is also under pressure to show leadership after rating agency Standard and Poors cut the US AAA credit rating, and as investors scrutinise Washington for evidence it can curb the countrys towering deficit and mounting debt. The supercommittee of six Democratic and six Republican lawmakers must find at least US$1.2 trillion (RM3.6 trillion) in deficit savings before the end of the year to avoid painful automatic cuts, and is mandated to seek savings of up to US$1.5 trillion (RM4.5 trillion). Death toll in US air show crash rises to nine

LOS ANGELES: The death toll from a horrific crash at a US air show rose to nine on Saturday, as investigators sifted through wreckage of a vintage plane ploughed into the ground yards from a packed grandstand. Crash experts confirmed that they were looking at reports that a key part of the World War IIs tailfin had fallen off before the accident, saying they had found a component on the ground. Eight of the 54 injured in the crash remained in critical condition, according to updated figures released by the two main local hospitals where casualties were taken. Two people had already been confirmed dead in hospital overnight, said Reno Police Department deputy chief Dave Evans, adding: We also have a total of seven fatalities that we know of ... on the tarmac to include the pilot. The vintage P-51 Mustang was flying in the National Championship Air Races Friday when its elderly pilot, a race veteran, apparently lost control of the aircraft and it plunged at full speed into spectators. Amateur video captured the moment the plane, a single-seat fighter aircraft from the 1940s called the Galloping Ghost, barrelrolled wildly through the sky and smashed at a nearvertical angle into a roped-off area for spectators, narrowly missing a grandstand packed with many more people. An official from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said it was very unlikely that the aircraft had a black box, but said investigators were aware of reports that a piece of the plane may have come off before the crash. We are aware of that. In fact, a component has been recovered in the area where that was observed. But I think it is critical at this point to know that we have not identified the component, said the official, Mark Rosekind. The aircraft was flown by Florida businessman and pilot Jimmy Leeward, reported to be 74 years old. He had raced at the event since 1975, and had served as a stunt pilot for several Hollywood films. Witnesses said the aircraft crashed into an area of box seats, while some said the pilot prevented even greater casualties by swerving to avoid hitting the grandstand itself. It pretty well wiped out the front of the box area, said Mike Houghton, the head of the Reno Air Racing Association. Video of the accident, shot from the grandstand, showed people gasping in horror as the plane came down. RARA spokesman Mike Draper said the plane was a lap or two into the race when Leeward called in a mayday. We dont know why it crashed. The pilot did call in. He did pull out of the lap, which is what they do. They usually pull up, directly up to clear the race track, he added. AFP

History is truth
I REFER to recent reports and letters on history. One online dictionary defines history as A usually chronological record of events, as of the life or development of a people or institution, often including an explanation of or commentary on those events. Thus, history is documentation of events, people and institutions. This documentation is undertaken by scholars in the field of history. We should not dispute any facts of history. For example, Malacca fell to the Portuguese in 1511, to the Dutch in 1641 and was ceded to the British under the AngloDutch Treaty in 1824. Likewise, J.W.W. Birch, the resident of Perak was murdered by Maharaja Lela, a Malay chieftain. All these are historical facts. Of course, history is interpreted by many from their own perspective. From the Malay perspective, Maharaja Lela is a hero and Birch, a villain, but from the British point of view, it is otherwise. Points of view differ, but history is a statement of truth. The task of writing history lies with historians, without prejudice, bias or from their personal point of view. Historians should rely on historical records based on written records for evidence to support their claims. Sometimes, photographs, films, or other forms of artefacts can be used to substantiate their documentation. Trouble often brews when history is interpreted by many. But, interpretation is not history. Normally, interpretation is considered as ones point of view. Disagreements raised today can be put to rest, if history is seen as truth. I suggest let history be the concern of the learned in the field of history, ie the historians. History should not be distorted or misinterpreted and written in a biased and from a personal view-point. Dr S. Nathesan Muar

Poor Americans!
D
ATA released recently by US agencies has been confusing. Some numbers suggest the US economic recovery is gaining traction while others underscore the continuing fragility of the current upturn that began in June 2009. For policymakers in Washington and in Kuala Lumpur, one clutch of statistics is critical those providing a snapshot of American consumers well-being. With consumer spending accounting for 70% of economic output, the health or otherwise of American consumers will determine whether the US economy continues to grow, stagnates or falls into another recession the second in less than four years. One mixed message was the Thomson Reuters/University of Michigans consumer sentiment index which edged up to 57.8 in September from 55.7 in August while an index tracking consumer expectations fell from 47.4 in August to 47 last month, the lowest level since May 1980. These indices suggest Americans are slightly more confident about the US economy but increasingly worried about the future. In contrast, a new US Census Bureau survey published last week was painfully unambiguous: the worlds richest economy now faces an unprecedented poverty crisis. Last year, 46.2 million people or nearly one in six Americans were living in poverty, the largest number since the survey began 52 years ago. Poverty is defined as households with incomes lower than US$22,113 for a family of four. In percentage terms, the US poverty rate was 15.1% the highest since 1993 and a marked jump from 11.7% in 2001. One statistic contributed significantly to the dire poverty numbers persistent unemployment. About 48 million Americans aged 18 to 64 did not work at all last year, the US Census Bureau said. Despite dismal poverty figures, some analysts point out Americas middle class is still sizeable. In a Wall Street Journal article, Ellen Byron suggests the American middle class makes up 40% of households and enjoys an annual income of between US$50,000 and US$140,000. Data from US consumer product companies, however, indicates the purchasing power of Americas middle-class is shrinking. Wal-Mart, the worlds biggest retailer, recorded lower US sales in its second quarter, the ninth consecutive quarter this number has fallen. Brian Sozzi, a senior research analyst at Wall Street Strategies, says core Wal-Mart customers making US$30,000 to US$60,000 a year go to the stores only when they get paid. He also highlights two other trends: customers are now buying smaller package sizes and deserting Wal-Mart for US discount chains like Family Dollar, Dollar Tree and Dollar General. Core customers at most US discount chains typically have household incomes of US$40,000 or less. Another indicator is the market strategy adopted by consumer giant Proctor & Gamble (P&G). For the first time in 38 years, P&G launched a new dish soap in the US at a bargain price a move that reflects its expectations the squeeze on middle America will be long lasting. Equally telling is Citigroups Consumer Hourglass Theory which posits US companies catering to consumers in the highest-income and lowest-income brackets offer the best investment opportunities. An hourglass society is one in which the top and bottom segments are the largest in number but the middle is pinched. From Dec 10, 2009 to Sept 1 this year, Citigroups index of 25 companies comprising Estee Lauder and Saks at the top and Family Dollar Stores and Kellogg at the bottom posted a 56.5% return for investors, outperforming the Dow Jones Industrial Averages 11% gain. Adding to the gloom is the perception the US political system is dysfunctional. President Obama announced recently a well-crafted US$447 billion plan to create jobs by expanding the Society Security tax holiday for workers, extending unemployment benefits and stepping up modestly spending on public works projects. These initiatives will be paid for through new taxes on the rich. Opposition by the Republicans to any proposed tax increases to reduce government debt and to any increase in government spending to stave off a recession suggests a replay of the prolonged Congressional stalemate that ended only hours before the deadline expired in early August to raise the US governments debt ceiling. Given expectations of a continuing policy gridlock in Washington, policymakers in Malaysia and elsewhere in East Asia should look to within the region rather than the fiscally-strapped US or to a crisis-ridden Europe to sustain their economic growth. Gerald Lyons, chief economist of Standard Chartered Bank, says the three most important words in the decade after the 9/11 destruction of the World Trade Center were not war on terror but made in China. For the next decade, he suggests the mantra will be owned by China. The MCP and the independence movement

PUT incident in proper perspective (Letters, Sept 14) raises some important points about the Malayan Communist Party and left-wing nationalism. It is true that the MCPs armed challenge expedited the British plan to grant independence to our country. It was also one of the reasons why the Malay elite liberalised the terms of citizenship for the immigrant population. But whatever the MCPs impact, it should not obscure our understanding of the ethnic character of the movement. The MCP was the only preponderantly non-indigenous communist party in Southeast Asia. It was China oriented both in letter and spirit. The party even mirrored the splits and schisms in the Chinese Communist Party and in Chinese politics as a whole. This is why when the MCP directed Malayan Peoples Anti-Japanese Army tried to gain control of a number of towns at the end of the Japanese Occupation in 1945, it was perceived by the Malays as a Chinese bid to usurp power. It was a perception that became even stronger during the period of the communist insurgency from 1948 to 1960. It has had a profound effect upon ethnic relations in Malaysia. It was this an ethnic character that was at variance with the cultural ethos of the land and not its ideology per se or its use of violence which made the MCP unique. After all, radical left parties that chose to resort to arms were part of the freedom struggle of a number of countries in Asia and Africa.Whatever our feelings about their ideology, we should not deny them their rightful place in history. The contributions of the Left in our own quest for independence, as Ranjit Singh Malhi rightly argues, should be given due emphasis in our history textbooks. The Left had preceded Umno and the Alliance not only in its call for Merdeka but also in pioneering an inter-ethnic coalition immediately after WWII. In similar vein, Islamic writers and preachers who began articulating their thoughts about colonialism, freedom and justice in different parts of the peninsula even before the Left should also be readily acknowledged. Equally important, an inclusive approach to our history will also recognise the role of freedom fighters in Sabah and Sarawak. Chandra Muzaffar Kuala Lumpur

Set the record straight on allegations of electoral fraud

THE press conference by Armed Forces Chief Gen Zulkifeli Mohd Zin on the alleged electoral fraud by certain members of the armed forces was the topic of conversation in all the Hari Raya open houses of former and current army personnel I visited. The press conference further dented the credibility of the armed forces and there was a sense of disappointment at how these allegations were handled. Whenever serious charges are made it is incumbent on the defence minister to make a statement. It is ironic that these service chiefs were lined up like recalcitrant schoolboys to face these allegations that affect the credibility of the ruling coalition only to create the perception that they (the military) who are supposedly apolitical were acting as advocates for the political parties that form the government. Zulkifeli made an emotional pronouncement that the armed force was both professional and apolitical. Then why was his speech laden with partisan political innuendoes? Instead of attacking those who made these allegations and hinting of a conspiracy, the professional thing to do, is to initiate a thorough investigation. As a former naval prosecutor, I am well aware of the malfeasance that occurs in the military as it does in society in general. What the public deserves is an investigation. What is not needed are lectures on the viability of being elected into office. Again, if the military is truly apolitical then why did the general lecture opposition parties on the nature of public trust? I was appalled to hear the general equate the actions of these men as acts of betrayal. First, there has been no investigation, so it would only be a betrayal if these allegations were proven to be false. Second, if these allegations were proven to be true, than these men who are in effect whistleblowers were merely continuing their loyalty to the service and the country. The generals comments create the impression that these men are persecuted because they chose to make their statements at a press conference of a legitimate political party. If the armed forces is truly apolitical, what is the logical implication when a serving general chooses to characterise the men and the party who made these allegations as treacherous when the latter may well administer the country some day? One troubling question that seemed to bother most of the armed forces people I spoke to was the deafening silence of the officers who served with these men. These officers should have set the record straight when allegations were made against these men. Instead we get a wall of silence and political parties are left to expose any possible wrongdoing in military matters. On loyalty. The problem of the armed forces being used for propagandistic purposes is endemic all over the world. We in the armed forces like any other job accept certain responsibilities. We receive many benefits that civilians dont receive because of the often times dangerous nature of our occupation. This is not a sacrifice. A sacrifice is something which is done without thought of reward or benefit. This does not elevate us above the ordinary citizen especially since non military professions like teachers, doctors and social workers are as equally important to the nation. Zulkifelis admonishment of how can we be loyal to you if youre disloyal to us is unacceptable. The public dont owe any loyalty to the military beyond that of acknowledging their contribution to the country. This same recognition is warranted for the civil service as well. The public should be loyal to the country and the principles it stands for. The military should be the embodiment of these principles. By making such unwarranted allegations the general has done much damage to the credibility of the armed forces. What the press conference did was create the impression that the armed forces was merely an extension of the ruling political parties and that any who choose to expose (possible) wrongdoings in the service are treacherous or disloyal. Get ready for more responsibility

I
N JULY, a Malaysian journalist interviewed me on perspectives as a Malaysian abroad. Among others, I had this to say: I kind of have faith in what (Prime Minister Datuk Seri) Najib Razak is doing. He made some very strong speeches here in Oxford, and in the recent Organisation of the Islamic Conference in Egypt. Najib quoted from the Torah and the Bible, so if you have a prime minister who sees nothing wrong with using these words, whats wrong with these other guys? I regret that a few people have changed how we interact with each other, such as the one who wrote that email about it being haram to wish someone Merry Christmas? These are the individuals that make it difficult for all of us. Hypothetically if the prime ministers secretary is getting married in a church, shouldnt he attend the wedding? At a gathering a few days later, sceptical Malaysians scoffed at the opinions that were expressed. Najib is all talk, no action, many said. All I said was, given time, he will make it all happen. On Thursday evening in London, the phones were buzzing between the Malaysian diaspora in disbelief. The Internal Security Act would be abolished along with two other laws deemed draconian; there would be no more doubts about the freedom of peaceful assembly; and newspapers would no longer be required to renew their licences annually. Entering into the 55th year of nationhood, there could not have been better news. Even the Londonbased Amnesty International put out a release welcoming the announcement. The doubting Thomases were silenced for a change. Detention without trial is unacceptable and when the police claimed they detained Sin Chew Daily reporter Tan Hoon Cheng under the ISA for her own safety, all logic was thrown out of the window. And I was among many journalists who made a stand at that unjustifiable arrest. But any new-found freedom must come with responsibility. In the 90s, the new-found uncontrolled, uncensored internet became a tool for dissent and expression of views. However, like a double-edged sword, it also became an avenue for claims, allegations, rumours, innuendo and accusations, most of which were not based on fact. It became and still remains a platform to criticise or accuse someone and hide under the cloak of anonymity. More than 10 years ago, I told blogger Jeff Ooi (now MP for Jelutong) that Malaysians do not know how to handle freedom because they were on leash for so long. I reasoned thats the reason cyberspace is full of invented stories, doctored stories, and socalled authoritative comments by spin doctors. Now that editors no longer have the sword of Damocles hanging over their heads, it is not a passport to publish anything that would harm or cause any damage to the already precarious race and religious relations in the country. On the other hand, it would be good if editors use this to ostracise those who seek to use the religious and race card for personal and political gains. As the next step, can we see some changes in the manner we manage our funds and assets. A welleducated and well-informed populace is the hope for our future. People will put their faith on a government that is open, transparent and accountable. Every right-thinking Malaysian would like to thank the prime minister for his bold and courageous decision. But then again, we need this sort of brave thinking to spread down the line to civil servants who are in charge of administration. In another part of the interview, I said: I would also like to see me being able to walk into a government department, and ask Can you please tell me how much of state land was developed in the past year? and get answers. If you have an open society and people who are careful with spending public money, your tax dollar will go a long way. Id like to see that, not civil servants treating us as if we owe them a living. Here, the civil servants treat you as a customer or a client. Having said that Id go on record and say we have the best chief secretary to the government now Tan Sri Mohd Sidek Hassan a man who engages the people and encourages engagement. The most important thing is to empower civil servants by not making them subservient to politicians. After all, the ministers draw up policies and the civil service is there to implement them. Any interference in the implementation process will only impede progress. Civil servants should be encouraged to stand up against any form of meddling instead of being punished for holding to established norms and principles. The prime minister has set in motion a new era by listening to the voices of the majority on antiquated laws and rules. It is hoped that members of his cabinet will start thinking on the same lines to ensure a prosperous and united nation as we continue our march into the future. (Belated) Malaysia Day greetings to all our readers. R. Nadeswaran hopes everyone will use the new-found freedom to espouse issues and values which will create a better community for all Malaysians. TNB cheap quality stock but few takers

PETALING JAYA: Tenaga Nasional Bhd is among the cheapest quality stocks on Bursa Malaysia, but the prospect of weak quarters ahead and less than certain outlook for a tariff hike to pay for a surge in the cost of generating electricity had kept most investors at bay. At last Thursdays close of RM5.01, the stock was traded below its book value of RM5.32 a share. AmResearchs Alex Goh said the valuation matched a 12year low, and a level that was briefly touched during the height of the sell-off on global equities during the financial crisis. We believed TNBs weakening financial position arising from the current natural gas shortfall and high coal cost has strengthened the urgency of its request for a tariff adjustment from the government, he wrote in a update on the utility company last week. TNBs CEO Datuk Seri Che Khalib Mohd Noh warned of another bad quarter for the last three months ended Aug 31 after a shocking loss of RM440 million for the third quarter. He expects the group to remain in the black for FY11, owing to the strong performance in the first half of the year. AmResearch expects the gas shortage issue to be resolved by year-end. Hence, we expect normalisation of the groups fuel cost by the second half of FY12, Goh said. That means from March 2012. AmResearch estimated that the bill for additional fuel cost to make up for the shortfall of gas supplied by Petronas to be around RM1.3 billion. It said TNB is lobbying for the burden to be shared between itself, Petronas, and the independent power producers in a 40:30:30 ratio. This had been done before in 2004. AmResearch assumed this will be repeated again, and its net profit forecast of RM3.6 billion for TNB in FY12 incorporated a potential 70% writeback from the additional fuel cost. Based on AmResearchs projection, TNBs shares are worth less than eight times earnings. The consensus estimate for FY12 net profit was a more conservative RM2.83 billion. TNBs market value stood at RM27.3 billion as of last Thursday. The stock had fallen 25% so far this year. Meanwhile, TNB hopes the 2012 budget, to be tabled in Parliament on Oct 7, will address the subsidy issue so that the distortion created in the market can be regularised again, according to a Bernama report. We have created distortion in the market for so long and to the extent that now the problem has snowballed. It has reached a point where the subsidy model is no longer sustainable. Of course, if you remove the subsidy entirely, it will not be politically correct. But, we must have a plan to gradually remove some part of the subsidy so that the distortion created can be regularised again. We dont want the problem to reach a breaking point where it is no longer tenable for any government to continue giving subsidy. It needs to be quickly addressed. We have to start somewhere, Che Khalib said in an interview with Bernama. In promoting green energy, he said the government should give tax incentives to encourage commercial and domestic users to look seriously into using energysaving equipment for appliances that consume high electricity such as air conditioners and refrigerators. Perhaps, the government should even consider computer tax relief for individuals to use energy-saving devices, he said.

Prestariang seeks strategic partner

> In talks with local and overseas companies to divest equity stake
BY KANG SIEW LI
sunbiz@thesundaily.com

CYBERJAYA: Recently-listed Prestariang Bhd, an information and communications technology (ICT) service provider, is looking for a strategic partner to fuel its growth plans, and targets to identify one by the first quarter of 2012. Its CEO Dr Abu Hasan Ismail said the company had held discussions recently with various local and international players in the education, information technology (IT) and training services industry to divest a strategic stake. He said: We want to grow and the way to do that is through partnerships, collaborations and mergers and acquisitions. We are in a strong cash position. As at June 30 2011, its gross cash balance stood at RM12.8 million. On the equity stake it plans to sell, Abu Hasan said: It is not about how much we sell in the company. More importantly, the potential partner has to add value to our business. Abu Hasan is now Prestariangs single biggest shareholder with a 41.2% stake. Other major shareholders include Kumpulan Modal Perdana Sdn Bhd which holds 9.48%, Permodalan Nasional Bhd with 4.82% and Loet Holdings, 4.32%. Prestariang made a lacklustre debut on Bursa Malaysia on July 27 this year, falling 16 sen to 74 sen from its IPO price of 90 sen. It closed at 49 sen last week. Abu Hasan blamed the selling pressure on retail investors who, he said, did not understand the company even though it continues to show strong yearon-year topline and earnings growth and to clinch new contracts, and placed it in the same category as those with no track record. Personally, it is frustrating. But I cant control market volatility, thus I will continue to focus on what I can control like our revenue, cost and profit, Abu Hasan told SunBiz in an interview.

Abu Hasan: We want to grow and the way to do that is through partnerships, collaboration and mergers and acquisitions.

Prestariang, which posted a net profit of RM15.1 million for the year ended Dec 31, 2010 (FY10), expects to more than double the figure in FY11 backed by an outstanding orderbook of RM299 million and new contract wins. Revenue is set to cross the RM100 million mark in FY11, from RM58.5 million a year earlier. For FY11, Prestariang will continue to derive 55% of its gross profit from the ICT training and certification segment and the remaining 45% from software licence distribution and management. We currently offer about 40 certification courses from various technology and software vendors such as Microsoft, IBM, Oracle, CompTIA and Autodesk, but we are moving towards developing our own homegrown training and certification programmes (through partnership arrangements) because that is where the growth is, said Abu Hasan. Gross profit margin from its in-house certification is far higher at 70-80% compared with 35-50% from the ICT

training and certification and software licensing segments. Already, it has developed its first inhouse programme called IC CITIZEN with Certiport from the US, of which it has secured RM51.5 million worth of contracts to provide courseware, exam vouchers and training services locally as well as in Brunei and the United Arab Emirates. IC CITIZEN certification is designed to produce digitally literate and responsible Netizens. We will start seeing revenue contributions from IC CITIZEN in the fourth quarter of this year, but the majority will be in FY12 and FY13, said Abu Hasan. Prestariang is also developing new in-house certification programmes in Vocational English and Islamic Finance with Prometric and Green IT with an Australian partner. Meanwhile, the company has set a maximum dividend payout policy of 50% and is expected to declare an interim dividend for FY11 in the third quarter.

BEVERAGE maker Fraser & Neave Holdings Bhd (F&N) will start the next financial year ending Sept 30, 2012 (FY12) minus the lucrative Coca-Cola bottling and distribution right with the expiry of a transitional agreement at the end of this month. The groups RM350 million Pulau Indah manufacturing hub is expected to commence production by February 2012, while its plant at Rojana, Thailand is ramping up production to meet rising demand from Indo-China. F&N traces back its origins to a century ago, and currently sells its products in over 20 countries.

OUTLOOK
AmResearch sees F&Ns core net profit dropping 14% in FY12 from a projected RM453 million in FY11 due to the absence of contribution from its property arm and the lost of the CocaCola contract. However it is positive on F&Ns longer-term growth with a new product line at its core soft drink and dairies divisions. The research house values the stock at RM20.40, or 18 times its projected earnings. Full-year dividend payout should normalise to 70-80 sen a share after a bumper FY10. Historically, F&N tends to command a premium versus the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KL Composite Index in times of uncertainty, given its relatively defensive attributes. SUBANG JAYA: Mamee-Double Decker (M) Bhd (Mamee) wants to leverage on its sponsorship deal with Manchester United Football Club to double its annual revenue to RM1 billion by 2015 and expand its global presence. Last Saturday, the snack manufacturer signed a three-year sponsorship agreement with the football club which includes branding opportunities for its Mister Potato on a global level and for Mamee noodles in Asia. Deputy general manager of sales and marketing Pierre Pang said the global initiative would include airtime for Mister Potato on the digital boards at Old Trafford stadium during the clubs home games. According to DNS Sport, each home game played in the stadium is viewed by over one billion fans globally. This would help us achieve our target of doubling our revenue to RM1 billion (from RM480 million in 2010) by 2015 and to go beyond Malaysia. Mister Potato is already the number one potato snack in Malaysia and we aim to reach the number one spot in Asia within five years, said Pierre. He added that Manchester United is the most supported football club with a fan base of 333 million worldwide, of which almost two-thirds or 193 million are in Asia. They see Mamee as a strategic partner to expand their reach in this region, he said, adding that Mamee is the third Asian sponsor for the club after Thailands Singha beer and Japans Epson. Mamee business development manager Vuitton Pang said the sponsorship would help it grow its export revenue from the current 30% to 50% within the next five years as Asia is a football-mad region. If you look at our top five export markets Australia, Singapore, the Netherlands, Russia and Maldives our

neighbouring countries are not featured, therefore there is a lot of potential to grow regionally, he said. Pierre said Mamee currently exports to over 80 countries but there is still room for improvement and to build partnerships with local distributors. On investments, Pierre said it will spend US$60 million (RM185.43 million) on branding and an additional US$60 million on manufacturing over the next three years. The manufacturing investment includes a factory in Malacca which would be ready by year-end, bringing its total number of plants to five. It already has a plant each in Malacca, Subang Jaya, Kuantan and in Myanmar. The new plant features a lot of automation and would increase its capacity by 1.5 times. The volume growth is expected to lower costs in the long run by reducing labour, human error and wastage. Why we want to focus on the local market now is because of the Asean Free Trade Area (Afta) which means no duty for exports to Southeast Asia and China. With this, we can compete better in the

international market, said Pierre. On opening more plants overseas, Vuitton said it sees huge potential in Thailand and Indonesia but was looking at economies of scale through local distributors before investing in physical presence in those markets. Mamee was also hit by rising raw material prices and has been absorbing the bulk of the costs but it will adjust the selling prices next month. Vuitton said it was affected during the first eight months of the year resulting in eroding margins despite healthy growth. Other factors affecting margin were the foreign exchange rate and its heavy investment in marketing this year. However, it is still on track to achieve RM550 million revenue this year compared with RM480 million in 2010. Pierre said Mamee is holding back on new brand launches as its current brands still have room for organic growth. In addition, it also has landbank in Malacca and Subang for further expansion. He said 2011 is a year of investments as Mamee is preparing for its next leap and expected growth over the next five years.

Moderate hike in tobacco duty seen

PETALING JAYA: Tobacco players are likely to be hit by a duty hike in the upcoming Budget 2012, says OSK Research Sdn Bhd, estimating the rise at 4.5-6.8%. We believe the increase will be a modest 1 sen to 1.5 sen per stick, which translates into a 4.5-6.8% year-on-year increase, (because) the high illicit trade presents a strong case against a drastic duty hike on tobacco, the research firm said in a recent report. The 2009 budget saw excise duties rise by a hefty 20%, leading to the market share of illicit cigarettes increasing by 11.8% in that recessionary year. Unless there is stricter enforcement to counter illicit cigarettes, a drastic hike would only result in diminishing duty collection for the government. Although illicit trade did fall to 32.5% for the Oct-Dec period last year from a high of 39.7% (March-May), the decline was attributed to sub-valuefor-money (VFM) brand cigarettes being illegally sold below minimum pricing. We expect to see a rebound in illicit trade when the next round of data is released, OSK added. It expects the duty hike to have a stronger impact on VFM brands compared with premium brand cigarettes as the former group of smokers tends to be more price sensitive. There also tends to be a higher proportion of VFM smokers in the suburban and rural areas where illicit trade is more prevalent. In our view, VFM smokers are the prime candidates to switch to sub-VFM and illicit cigarettes when prices go up. We believe such risks are amplified in an economic downturn, said OSK, reiterating its neutral call on the tobacco sector. We prefer British American Tobacco (Malaysia) Bhd to JT International Bhd as the former is less exposed to VFM brands which are more price elastic and prone to substitution, it added. OSK, meanwhile, believes that breweries will be spared in the upcoming budget. For the breweries, we do not see a hike since beer duty is already the second highest globally while consumption is comparatively low, it said. A further increase on the already high beer duties would have a significant negative impact on duty collection. This was evident during the 2004-2006 period when excise duty rose at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 18.5% but its collection only went up by 5.1%. The malt liquor market volume in Malaysia has remained slow over the long term, growing only at a CAGR of 0.8%. Further, data from the World Health Organisation indicates that alcohol consumption in Malaysia is far from alarming. In fact, Malaysias per capita consumption is less than a quarter of the regional average, said OSK, placing an overweight call on the brewery sector for its defensive qualities. The 2009 recession has shown that the malt liquor market volume tends to be inelastic to gross domestic product. In view of a potential economic slowdown, the sector could also benefit from falling raw material prices and down-trading among drinkers. OSKs top stock pick for breweries is Guinness Anchor Bhd (GAB) as it believes that it has the more defensive properties that would appeal in a downturn. Compared with Carlsberg Brewery Malaysia Bhd, GAB has a more diversified brand portfolio and stronger foothold in the resilient traditional on-trade channel. We maintain a buy call on both breweries, with GAB at RM13.58 fair value, but reduce Carlsbergs fair value from RM8.58 to RM8.31, said OSK.

US Feds dilemma: Twist or shout

WASHINGTON: A fight looms in the US Federal Reserve tomorrow as policymakers wrestle over whether the threat of inflation should prevent them from feeding more money into the economy to boost jobs. While one camp on the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) is believed to favour a hopefully stimulative economic measure known as Operation Twist, a group of vocal dissenters could block that, shouting the alarm that inflation is picking up. Until data released last Thursday showed a surge in inflation, markets and economists had mostly expected that the FOMC would adopt Operation Twist a 1961 bond-buying tactic named after the popular rock and roll dance of the time. But with consumer prices having surged significantly in July and August, and the inflation rate now at 3.8% year-over-year, analysts say the so-called inflation hawks might have power behind their argument that more stimulus would be dangerous. The August inflation report makes a mockery of the FOMCs claim that inflation has moderated in recent months and raises the hurdle for additional easing action, John Ryding and Conrad DeQuadros of RDQ Economics said. Already anticipating a tough debate, the FOMC decided last month to extend the meeting to two days to weigh the evidence and the choices. At the end of June the Fed wound up its QE2 stimulus measure, a six-month programme to inject US$600 billion (RM1.85 trillion) of liquidity into the economy by buying short-term US bonds. QE2 the second round of quantitative easing prevented a plunge into disinflation. But it failed to give a sustained boost to the overall economy, which grew at a near-stall rate of below 1% in the first half of the year, leaving the jobless rate at more than 9%. Since then, Fed chairman Ben Bernanke has consistently said that unemployment, and the lack of confidence that is preventing consumers from spending money, is the US economys biggest problem. With worries of recession resurfacing, at its last meeting on Aug 9 the FOMC decided to make a pledge to hold interest rates near zero for two more years. It was an uncommon public commitment designed to encourage long-term, job-generating lending by banks and investment by companies skittishly hoarding cash. The Fed, however, did not offer a successor to QE2, and weeks later the minutes of that meeting showed that three of the FOMCs 10 voting members the inflation hawks were strongly against the pledge on interest rates. Operation Twist could be an acceptable compromise. The Fed is still holding and rolling over the QE2 purchases of short-term bonds. It could shift these holdings to long-term bonds, a move that would press down long-term rates, to further encourage bank lending to companies and corporate investment. AFP

Plan for the inevitable

COMMENT
by Tony Pereira

THE news that Yahoo! CEO Carol Bartz was sacked after less than three years in the top job has reopened the whole discussion around succession planning. Yahoo! is a young company. It was established by its founder Jerry Yang in 1995. Yang himself was replaced at Yahoo! due to shareholder dissatisfaction. Since it did not have a history to speak of, there were no internal candidates to replace Yang when he stepped down as CEO. Hence the board had to go outside to source his replacement. Clearly, this has not worked. As Yahoo! continues the search for a new chief and reassesses its business model, the importance of succession planning should be a key agenda item for the board of any listed company. Malaysia Airlines is another example of a company which, despite its long history, did not have a successor in place when change was necessary. In fact a number of the GLCs here seem to have little in the way of succession planning. Malayan Banking, Tenaga Nasional and Axiata, to name a few, have all opted for outside appointments for the top jobs rather than internal promotions when change had been deemed necessary. This is a pity, especially if the reason for outside hires is due to lack of planning. One of the important jobs of a C-level executive is to ensure continuity of the organisation. It takes a very special executive to set that as an objective. But it is this characteristic that has separated Jack Welch (ex-GE), Louis Gerstner Jr (ex-IBM) and A.G. Lafley (ex-Proctor & Gamble) from other CEOs. Each of these companies has a remarkable story about

succession planning in respect of the top job in the company. Take GE for example. Since Thomas Edisons General Electric Company merged with The Thomas Houston Company in 1892 to form GE, there have only been 12 CEOs. All of them from within the company. Gerard Swope who ran the company for 20 years from 1922 joined GE as a helper in 1893! GE clearly had a strong HR process even back then! In which other company can an employee rise from office boy to become CEO? Proctor & Gamble is another household name that is proud of its HR processes. In its long history of 172 years, P&G as it is otherwise known, has had only 12 CEOs and all of them from within the company. P&Gs global human resource officer, Moheet Nagrath, described their succession planning process in an interview with Fortune magazine. P&G has a binder which shows the top 120 executives of the company and their performance over the previous six years along a number of financial and non-financial dimensions. Included in the binder that they call the Talent Portfolio are the future CEOs of the company. It is no wonder than when Lafley retired as CEO of P&G, he was quickly invited to sit on the board of GE. Clearly the far-sightedness of Lafley impressed GE. IBM is also another household name, which despite losing its way in the early nineties, has a strong commitment to people development. The story here is different to that of GE and P&G. Gerstner was appointed in 1994, at a time when IBM was on the brink of collapse. In fact, in his book about IBM called Who Says Elephants Cant Dance? Gerstner confesses he had strong doubts about whether he could save the company. Not only did he save it, he grew it and handed over a strong business to an IBM

veteran, Sam Palmisano in 2003. Palmisano has changed the focus of IBM from purely a seller of hardware to a services company following the US$3.9 billion acquisition of PwCs consulting business. Palmisano turned 60 in July and rumours suggest he will be naming his successor soon. All the candidates being mentioned are long-serving IBM executives. GE, P&G and IBM are all strong performing companies with healthy cash flows and a resilience that enables them to handle even the deepest of global recessions. It is no accident that the human resource processes in these companies are the benchmark for others to follow. In these companies, the HR department is not a cost centre it is where the future of the company is identified, nutured and then unleashed. There is no shame in following the practices of the best. For those who dream of getting to the top, make it happen. If meritocracy exists, the only limiting factor will be the individual himself. Remember the movie The Pursuit Of Happiness? The true story of Chris Gardner, an African-American who dreamed to be a top stockbroker whilst he and his son lived in a shelter home and slept in subways. He worked hard and made it all the way to the top. Down in Australia, John Borghetti, son of Italian immigrant parents, started his career in the mailroom of Qantas Airways. He is now CEO of Virgin Blue Group. I once read somewhere this quote: The tragedy of life is not death. It is what we allow to die inside us whilst we live. The next time your mail gets delivered to your in-tray, the person delivering it could be the future CEO of the company. Tony Pereira is a chartered accountant and the CFO of a private venture fund

Seven S. Korea banks told to suspend ops

SEOUL: South Koreas government yesterday ordered seven savings banks to suspend operations because of their poor financial condition due to heavy investment in risky property projects at home and abroad. The decision came two months after Seoul banking regulators launched investigations into scores of financially-troubled savings banks hit by the market downturn amid the global economic crisis. The Financial Supervisory Commission (FSC) has ordered the banks to suspend business for six months, urging the management to improve their financial health by issuing more shares or selling assets. The FSC said the banks capital adequacy ratios a measure of reserves against assets at risk stipulated by the Bank for International Settlements standards were below 1%, far below a regulatory limit of 5%. UBS chief: No plan to quit

GENEVA: The head of Swiss banking giant UBS said yesterday he did not feel guilty about the US$2 billion rogue trading that occurred in his bank, and that he was not planning to resign over the fraud. I am responsible for everything that happens in the bank. But if you ask me if I feel guilty, then I would say no, Oswald Gruebel, chief executive of the bank, told Swiss newspaper Sonntag in an interview. When someone is driven by criminal intent, you cant do anything, he said. AFP

China solar power rms having their day in the sun as US rivals fail
SHANGHAI: Chinas solar power firms are emerging as the industrys dominant force after the collapse of foreign competitors, but the new market leaders are already struggling with low prices and overcapacity. As the workshop of the world, China has used cheap labour and state support to build a solar industry from scratch in just over a decade as part of a broader strategy to move up the manufacturing value chain from cheap toys and clothes. China is the worlds second-biggest oil consumer, and polluting fossil fuels account for 90% of its total energy use, but the country is making large strides forward in clean energy. Analysts say Chinese firms now have 70% of the growing global market in solar panels, thanks to aggressive pricing and the collapse of three US competitors in the last two months. The position of Chinese players has certainly been enhanced this year, said Tang Xiaodong, a Shanghai-based analyst at independent investment advisory firm CEBM. Lower costs are the direction of the industry and the advantages of Chinese firms on this front have been manifested more clearly. Chinas solar panel prices have fallen to around US$1.20 per watt of generation, down from about US$1.70 last year and much lower than the global average of about US$2 in 2010. But the downward price spiral has hurt revenues across the industry, and Chinese companies are themselves feeling the pain. Everyone is facing falling prices, increasing inventories and dire straits, said an official at Yingli Green Energy, one of Chinas biggest solar companies, speaking on condition of anonymity. Critics argue that Chinese companies have unfair advantages in the form of access to cheap capital from Chinas state-run banks. However, they are not alone in receiving government assistance the latest US solar firm to file for bankruptcy was Solyndra, which had a US$535 million (RM1.65 billion) loan guarantee from President Barack Obamas administration. between the lines

> Singer-songwriter Liyana Fizi wants to share with her fans the deeper meaning behind each song in her debut album
BY ANANSA JACOB NDIE music fans would know her as the voice of local band Estrella, famous for its 2008 single Stay, but Liyana Fizi is more than ready to be recognised for her own talents as a singer-songwriter. Her debut solo album, Between the Lines, was released at a showcase on Sept 11 at the Bentley Music Auditorium, but before that, Liyana gave the media a quick preview of some of the songs on the 10-track album at the Homegrown Space in Wisma Bentley, Mutiara Damansara. She performed three tracks, Kaku, Jatuh and the albums first single, Light Writing, accompanied by guitarist Izaad Amir and bassist Pito, as well as violinist Michelle Lai. Light Writing was released last month, and already has fans buzzing about her new sound. I named the album Between the Lines because each song has a deeper meaning, if you listen to the lyrics carefully, Liyana said. She drew inspiration for the songs from events and things in her life, including a long stretch of travelling that she did last year. I think that when you travel it does inspire you in many ways, she said. Of course I find inspirations everywhere, and while its good to be creative, people do sometimes think youre weird when you start randomly reciting lyrics. The album took two years to write, and was recorded in Bandung, Indonesia, in the space of a few weeks at the end of April. I did it in Bandung because I had heard a lot about its arts and music scene, so I thought Why not? and decided to go there. I also worked with some musicians there who are from the Bandung band, 4Peniti. The 4Peniti band was in Malaysia to perform with Liyana at her Sept 11 showcase together with her regular sessionists Izaad and Pito, and percussionist Ruviyamin Ruslan. Opening her showcase were local groups Tenderfist and Narmi. I really admire Tenderfist and their music, she said. In fact, Im working on a collaboration with

them now on a new song. While Between the Lines might be Liyanas first solo album, she does not feel as though it is an entirely solo effort. I get asked a lot about how different it is performing in a band and I love sharing my ideas and music with performing solo, but the truth is even at my solo people, and I love to shows, Im always see how they accompanied onstage by respond to it. a guitarist or by a band. Liyana Fizi So even in this album, I dont feel as though I did it alone; its just that Im using my own name for this. For her, the album is a very personal effort that she wants to share with her fans. For me, its always been about sharing rather than (making money), and so Im not really placing too many expectations on this album. MOST TOLERANT NATION

WHEN politician Dominique Strauss-Kahn arrived in France after being cleared of a New York sex scandal, he returned home smiling despite facing a frosty reception. Maybe he should have gone to Mexico instead, the worlds most tolerant nation.

> Asians are being forced to drop our planet-friendly habits for climate-destroying ones
THLETES got into trouble for trying to bring their own milk to the Commonwealth Games in India. Why? Because the milk was still in the cow. Leave the animal outside, officials ordered. And use packaged milk from the canteen. This is so dumb. Bringing your own cow (common in India) is way more environmentally friendly. The same day, there was an article in the business pages about an appliance sales mystery. Asians buy all the same stuff as Westerners do, except for clothes drying machines. No Asians buy them. Why? Because we have vast amounts of miracle elements called air and sunshine, which dry clothes at no cost. But a dark army (businessmen) is planning campaigns to make us change our habits. The world has gone mad. Asians are being forced to drop our timeless, planet-friendly ways to adopt climatedestroying alternatives. I tried to raise these issues in the local coffee shop but got nowhere. My friends and colleagues (idiots) instead wanted to share toilet tales, the subject of a recent column.

Old ways
One guy had been collecting stories of people attacked with toilet seats. There was such an attack in America and another in Thailand. But the news reports never deal with the obvious question, he lamented. Did the attackers afterwards leave the toilet seat upright or horizontal? (As a married man, I agree this is a key issue.) But I was intrigued by a comment from reader Peter Bentley: Why do women go to the toilet in groups? Men never do. Good question. One night a friend and I did an experiment. Halfway through dinner at a noisy restaurant, I got up and said: Im going to the gents. Anybody want to come with me? My friend jumped up and said: Sure, Ill come. As we headed off, we could hear a horrified silence descend on the crowd. On the way back from the toilet, I told my friend: That was a bad idea. Now everyone will think were gay.

are still best

We better tell them were not. He shook his head. You cant, he said. Its against the law to say youre not gay. Its discrimination and a hate crime, and you can be locked up for three years. I wish hed told me that earlier. Halfway through writing this column, I got good news from India via email. A widow who kept a cow as a portable milk supply for her two boys was distraught when a tiger ate it. In the past, villagers would have killed the tiger. But times have changed. Last week, they forgave the tiger and started a Facebook page to raise money for a new cow. The tiger will probably become a YouTube sensation and Justin Bieber will sing a song about it. But my smile was short-lived. In the next email, a reader told me that a new law has been passed in Shanghai. It is now illegal to hang your clothes out to dry in that city. People in China are being forced to buy clothes drying machines instead. The dark army has won that round. Fight back. Save the planet. Keep a cow in the kitchen. STARVING DOGS EAT OWNER

SEVEN dogs starved of food and water for two weeks are suspected of eating their Indonesian owner after he returned to his hometown in Manado from a holiday, local media reported recently. A neighbourhood guard saw luggage lined up at the front of Andre Lumbogas house, days after the 50-year-old arrived back home. He approached the house, smelled something foul and called the police, according to a report.

Hitachi unveils headset to study brain activity

A JAPANESE research team last week unveiled a headset they say can measure activity in the brain and could be used to improve performance in the classroom or on the sports field. Engineers from Hitachi working with university scientists say the lightweight headset will accurately measure minute changes in the amount of blood in the brain a key indicator of how hard the organ is working. They said numerous wireless devices could be running simultaneously, with the data displayed on a screen in real time, allowing researchers to monitor the performance of up to 20 people, or a whole sporting team, at once. The Japanese electronics giant said it currently has no plans for a commercial launch of the equipment, which uses nearinfrared light to detect the amount of blood in the brain. Scientists studying cognitive performance previously had to use highly artificial environments, such as laying people in a dark tube and keeping their heads still, said Ryuta Kawashima, head of the research team. But the newly developed gear will allow them to take measurements in reallife situations where human brains are interacting in complicated social situations, said Kawashima, of Tohoku University. One of my dreams is to help individuals better perform in society. Kawashima was the scientist behind the smash-hit Brain Training games on Nintendo consoles. Exploring the brain activity of, for example, football players to determine under which conditions they perform well could also help improve whole team performance, he said. Kawashima is also looking at how the kit could be used in classrooms. Studying brain activity when humans are concentrating or getting an idea is expected to help trainee teachers to get feedback from pupils and improve their teaching abilities, he said. AFPRelaxnews

THE brand new LG Optimus Sol (LG-E730) is an eyeful of simplicity. This latest addition to the LG Optimus Smartphone series is set to win the hearts of mobile users looking for a subtly appealing yet multifunctional phone. The 3.8-inch 800x480 pixel screen houses the top-notch Ultra AMOLED technology that displays images crisp and clear in bright and sunny conditions. The technology has a two-fold advanced reflection rate as compared to standard AMOLED displays, thus reducing the image quality degradation. The device also uses an enhanced idle-based power management system that boosts battery life by 20 to 30%. With the poweroptimising Dark UI selected, the Optimus Sol utilises less white light in order to extend battery life performances. At only 9.8mm thick, the LG Optimus Sol packs an impressive list of specifications besides its display and sleek design. The Android smartphone, running on the 2.3 Gingerbread platform, spots a 1GHz processor, 512MB RAM, expandable memory and a five-megapixel camera that comes with auto-focusing as well as fast auto-shuttering. Users can also take full advantage of multimedia connectivity via onscreen links to the internet. The Optimus Sol stands out from its competitors as the most affordable 1GHz Android smartphone with an AMOLED display, said LG Electronics Mobile Communications president and CEO, Dr Park Jong-seok. He said by introducing a no-nonsense phone that boasts one of the best displays on the market, LG believes it has the real winner for consumers who are looking for a subtle but visually stunning phone. The smartphone will be introduced in Europe this month, followed by roll-outs in Central and South America. It will be available in black, titan and white, depending on the region. There is still no news on the pricing and when the device will hit the local market.

Quiet elegance
CAROLINA HERRERA, a perennial favourite of Hollywoods A-list, recently offered a bit of quiet elegance for spring 2012, with flowing dresses, bare shoulders and simple silhouettes. For daytime, Herrera offered short ladylike white skirts and dresses with bird prints in bright green and canary yellow, or brick red. Dresses in dizzying geometric patterns contrasted with clean black and white numbers. For evening, body-skimming gowns were sleeveless or strapless, in shimmering silver, eye-popping yellow or emerald green. I love the idea of elegance and intricacy, but whether it is in a piece of clothing or a fragrance, the intricacy must appear as simplicity, the Venezuela-born Herrera has said. Oscar-winning actress Renee Zellweger who often wears Herrera gowns on the red carpet was in the front row, dressed in subdued grey. But rapper of the moment Nicki

The 69-year-old US designer came out for her curtain call and did her traditional cartwheel. When the Big Apple and the rest of the United States soberly marked the 10th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, fashion week went on at the usual frenetic pace, with at least two dozen shows a day. Diane von Furstenberg acknowledged the solemnity of the occasion by handing out small American flags to those in the front row at the end of her polished show. Although Asian countries including Malaysia and Singapore have summer all year round, Uniqlo has taken this into account and made some adjustments by placing more spring/ summer clothing collection for the benefit of shoppers. For example, the UT range which comprises mostly short sleeve tees are suitable for Malaysia and other South East Asian countries which have summer all year round. I was quite surprised to know that even the autumn/winter items were also doing very well in Malaysia, especially among travellers. There may not be winter here, but Uniqlo is one of the few international brands which brings in the full range of autumn/winter collection despite the weather, expressed Satoshi. If you are in the midst of preparing for a winter escapade, now is the best time to shop for your winterwear as Uniqlo unveils its autumn/winter 2011 collection along with other in-store promotions.

Fish Leong.

>Korean skincare brand appoints Fish Leong as its rst ambassador

EADING beauty and skincare brand Pure Beauty will no longer be only known for its skincare products but also another beautiful trait. After the success of its Pure Beauty Youth Restore Skincare Range, the brand has just appointed Asia's Queen of Love Ballads as the brand ambassador for its new Pure Beauty Pomegranate Antioxidant Skincare Product Range. This multi-award winning songstress will endorse this exclusive skincare brand in all advertising and promotion programmes for the product range. An icon of beauty, charm and immense talent, Leong Chui Peng or Fish Leong, as she is popularly known is a household name in the Chinese entertainment industry. Since launching her career in 1997, this petite singer has been dubbed the Malaysian singer who has won the most honours in the music industry. In addition, her live concerts in Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan and Hong Kong are consistently sell-out events, highly commended by entertainment and media critics all over Asia. Pure Beauty Pomegranate Antioxidant Skincare Range is a leading skincare brand originating from Korea. A skincare range which incorporates a breakthrough Korean skincare technology, Pure Beauty uses nutrient-rich pomegranate extracts with antioxidant qualities as the main ingredient for its efficacy. "Pure Beauty is proud to be associated with our very own homegrown songstress. We believe that Fish Leong is the epitome of pure natural beauty, vitality, youthfulness and radiance, a true personification of Pure Beautys qualities. She exudes the real essence of confidence. With the support and wow factor of Fish, we are confident that the Pure Beauty brand identity will make a strong impact in the beauty arena and propel us into the forefront

Pure Beauty Pomegranate Antioxidant Skincare Range. of the skincare industry as well", said Alice Lau, Watsons senior merchandise manager. Pomegranate Antioxidant Skincare provides users with the latest cocktail of natural extracts, including oil extracted from pomegranate. To maximise the effectiveness of the product, the extracts and ingredients are made in fine grain form which can be easily absorbed by the skin and capsuled for better affinity to the skin. The revolutionary formula enables the skin's own regeneration mechanism to help reverse the effects of ageing by penetrating safely and deep down to the 10th layer of skin. The product aims to help brighten, firm, energise, refresh and soften skin, plus acts as an anti-ageing agent. Targeted at modern working ladies who are often exposed to harsh environments, the new Pure Beauty Pomegranate Antioxidant Skincare Range is affordably priced and sold exclusively at all Watsons stores.

Hipster approach
FIRST fashion was mad about him, and now it seems to be beauty's turn: a video released to promote the new Madly Kenzo fragrance is set against the musician Devendra Banhart's "Carmensita". Apart from regularly DJing at fashion week parties, Banhart previously caused quite a frenzy when he starred in a campaign for eyewear brand Oliver Peoples with his girlfriend Rebecca Schwartz: the clip showed the barely clothed couple frolicking around John Lautner's Rainbow House in Los Angeles, with Banhart's "Brindo" playing in the background. Now, Kenzo is having a go at a more "hipster" approach, having used his music. "Madly Kenzo is the fragrance of a woman who is madly free, a woman who defies conventions," the Japanese fashion house says. - AFP Relaxnews

Bobbi Brown launches blog

TWITTER, Tumblr, Facebook: fashion and beauty brands are finding more and more ways to communicate with their fans directly. The latest example is Bobbi Brown, who has just launched a blog called Everything Bobbi. "It's always been my fantasy to be an editor at a magazine, to be able to tell the story my way," Brown told Women's Wear Daily. "This [blog] lets me do it. It isn't about e-commerce ... but more about how you can achieve realistic beauty, what inspires me and things like that." Similar to other brands' blogs such as the ones by J. Crew or Kate Spade, readers will find videos, inspirational stories and photos, recipes, and other lifestyle content. http://everythingbobbi.com. AFP Relaxnews

HOROSCOPE
Aug 23 Sept 22 SOME issues can be dealt with logically. But certain of those youre currently contending are more about emotions than facts. While you may be able to distinguish between these, not everybody can. Bear this in mind when youre discussing such matters and youll understand why the views of certain individuals make no sense. Sept 23 Oct 22 PUTTING yourself first while in the midst of chaos isnt easy. But because next weeks Libra New Moon constitutes a sort of personal new year, changes are inevitable. On one hand youll be deciding what must go, while on the other youll be focusing on what and who should take priority in the future. Oct 23 Nov 21 YOUVE long known that youd have to confront one particular individual about certain matters. Wait until next week, when both the Sun and Mercury are at odds with your ruler Pluto. By then youll be ready to deal with these and several other issues. It wont be easy. But you can finally clear the air. Nov 22 Dec 21 FROM your perspective, the sudden events changing this weeks arrangements offer a creative challenge. You enjoy figuring out how to deal with the resulting upheaval. Do exactly that. Ordinarily youd then take action. First, update those around you on your plans. Then proceed, ideally without further discussion. Dec 22 Jan 19 WHEN Pluto, the planet of truth, and of transformation through truth, moved into Capricorn in 2008, you began a cycle of deep reflection and growth. Bear this in mind when confronted with seemingly impossible situations this week, and youll view them as a challenge to be dealt with and learned from. Jan 20 Feb 18 SOMETIMES serious differences are best avoided. However, what you learn about others and the circumstances youre dealing with more than justifies clashes. Ironically, the issues in question arent nearly as incendiary as you fear. But you wont know that until youre actually discussing them openly. Feb 19 March 19 BEING intuitive by nature, youll often sense changes long before others have any idea about whats next. This has been the case recently. Consequently, youll be relieved that the events triggered by the current New Moon will open their eyes to those developments youve been describing. And none too soon. March 20 April 19 THE six-week-long cycle of focusing on and dealing with domestic or family matters has come to a conclusion. During this period, the tasks and issues you faced ranged from challenging to just plain tedious. Now that youre looking back on what youve achieved, youll feel a huge sense of accomplishment. April 20 May 20 YOU already know tricky issues are looming. Between now and the end of the month, when your ruler Venus meets the tough-minded Saturn, youll have a chance to assess exactly what your options are and make plans. Or you could hope that, somehow, you can avoid those issues. It is, however, highly unlikely. May 21 June 20 NOBODY would suggest that youre uncommunicative. You not only enjoy a lively exchange of ideas, its the way you gather information. However, youve been sidestepping pivotal topics, mostly because you assumed others werent interested. But they possess vital facts you need to know about. June 21 July 22 THE Full Moon may have been a week ago. But youre still struggling with ongoing issues involving certain already tricky individuals which came to a head then. However, the real problem isnt those issues but rather the fact that they dont care about things being be resolved nearly as much as you do. July 23 Aug 22 EVERYBODY knows about your high standards. You know you try harder, but are still sometimes amazed how little effort others make. To you, such compromise is unacceptable. Yet in several situations youve no choice. While at the moment this may seem a defeat, youll soon realise it was time to move on.

Winter Sonata the anime

FANS OF the hugely-popular Korean drama series can now enjoy the anime version, premiering on ONE HD (Astro B.yond Channel 393) and Animax (Astro Channel 715) tomorrow. This romantic TV drama captivated fans all over the region when it was first aired in 2002. Such was its popularity that Winter Sonata became the first Korean drama series to be turned into a 26-half-hourepisode anime series in 2009. Now, fans here will get to watch the anime series, with the first two episodes airing on both Astro channels at 6.50pm tomorrow, and subsequent episodes airing on week nights at 7.30pm, only on Animax. The Winter Sonata anime series reunites 23 members of the original Korean cast, including lead stars Bae Yong Joon and Choi Ji Woo, who lend their voices and their faces to the characters they play in the original series. Bae voices Jun-Sang, the gifted but illegitimate son of an eminent musician, who moves with his mother to study in Chuncheon, a rural city in South Korea. He soon falls for his classmate Yu-Jin, voiced by Choi. However, their romance is cut short when Jun-Sang loses his memory in a car crash. Jun-Sang is taken to the US by his mother to start life afresh as MinHyeong, leaving everyone, including YuJin, to think that he had died in the accident. A decade later, Min-Hyeong is an award-winning architect who returns to live in Korea. When Yu-Jin sees him on a street, she breaks off her engagement to her childhood friend and begins working at the same firm as Min-Hyeong in the hope of finding out if he really is her long-lost love. However, Yu-Jin is unaware that Min-Hyeong is now dating her friend, Che-Rin.

Eat likea

caveman
> Sauvage, a new restaurant in Berlin, lets you do just that
BOVE the door hangs a deers antlers, a slate tablet covered with meat skewers sits on a table and the fossilised remains of an animal hang on the wall while a candle flickers. The ambience looks like the kitchen in Fred Flintstones house and thats not far off the mark as the food that is cooked here in the Berlin restaurant, Sauvage, has a distinctly Stone Age character. The owners say their cooking can even help you lose weight. We only use ingredients that were available during the Stone Age, says Boris LeitePoco. Leite-Poco opened Sauvage two months ago in the district of Neukoelln together with his spouse Rodrigo. Both men follow a diet that strictly adheres to what our prehistoric ancestors would have followed. Sugar, pasta, rice, potatoes and bread are taboo. Meat, fish, vegetables, berries and nuts are, however, on the menu. Its a Palaeolithic form of nutrition known as the Paleo Diet or simply Stone Age eating. I eat a lot and still manage to lose weight, says Leite-Poco. The 27-year-old has been following the Paleo Diet for two years. Proponents of Stone Age food say the human body is genetically programmed for a prehistoric menu. Bread and milk became available much later to humans and therefore the body is less well able to digest them. The result is more weight and poorer health. However, there are no mammoth steaks or dinosaur filets at Sauvage. The menu looks distinctly modern leg of lamb in rosemary-ginger butter, eggwrap with shallot-tomato sauce and nut-sesame cake are just a few of the items guests can choose from. Naturally, dessert items are free of sugar and baking powder. The owners of Sauvage believe their restaurant is the first of its kind in Europe. The Prague restaurant Pravek (Stone Age) cooks its meals over an open fire in a cave-like atmosphere but potatoes and cheese are served. Leite-Poco says there is a restaurant in London that serves Palaeolithic meals but not exclusively so. Sauvage is the only business in Germany offering

this type of menu. Kawan Lotfi prepares crackers in Sauvages kitchen using only vegetables as ingredients. The 26year-old kitchen helper has changed his diet to that of Fred Flintstones. I used to have a problem not eating ice cream or sweet things, he says. But now, I no longer need to eat those very sweet things. But there are a few devices of the modern age that Lotfi cannot do without such as his microwave oven for cooking crackers while meals are cooked on an electric stove. Were not trying to imitate how prehistoric people used to cook but to eat as healthy as they did, says Leite-Poco. Paleo is not a diet but a way of life. Dietitians, however, are sceptical about whether it is healthy to completely avoid every form of grain. Eating grains doesnt have to be a negative thing per se, says Alexander Stroehle from the University of Hanover. Stroehle works at the universitys Institute for Food Science and Human Nutrition and has researched the eating habits of our prehistoric forbears. He says the human body no longer has the same needs it had two million years ago. However, the Paleo Diet can be quite healthy viewed from the nutritional concentration aspect, he says. But the rationale behind it is not plausible. He says our ancestors looked upon food in a completely different way than us, adding that in the Stone Age, humans didnt want to lose weight. dpa

Stormy win for Mayweather

F
LOYD MAYWEATHER dethroned WBC welterweight champion Victor Ortiz with a controversial blind-side punch in the fourth round of their lively title ght yesterday in Las Vegas. Mayweather knocked out Ortiz at 2:59 of the fourth as he hit the champion and fellow American after a break in the ght with a left-right combination while Ortiz had his hands down in the centre of the ring. It is protect yourself at all times. We touched gloves and that is all she wrote, the still-unbeaten Mayweather said. He did something dirty but we are not here to complain about what he did dirty or I did dirty. Referee Joe Cortez had stopped the ght in mid-round to deduct a point from Ortiz for head-butting Mayweather in the corner during a vicious exchange of punches. Ortiz had just nished apologising twice to Mayweather for the head butt when Mayweather surprised him with a short left. After the ght, Ortiz and his corner complained about the way the referee handled the nal moments of the ght, but Ortiz also took some of the blame for not protecting himself. It was called a break and I did as I was told, Ortiz said. I looked at the ref and then boom! I was out. There was a little miscommunication by the ref. But I have no one to blame but myself. It was a learning experience. The MGM Hotel and Casino crowd booed the decision by Cortez to give the victory to Mayweather, who had been winning the 147-pound ght by a slim margin through the rst three rounds. Cortez said he had ofcially restarted the ght following the head butt and point deduction and that Mayweather had a green light to start punching again. Time was in, the ghter needed to keep his guard up. Mayweather did nothing illegal, Cortez said. The 34-year-old Mayweather is now 42-0 with 26 knockouts and looked impressive early despite taking 16 months off since his last ght. But Mayweather wasnt done in the ring, and after the ght he engaged in a obscenity-laced confrontation with HBO interviewer Larry Merchant. You never give me a fair shake. HBO needs to re you. You dont know sh*t about boxing, Mayweather said. Merchant red back, I wish I was 50 years younger: I would kick your a**. Ortiz, who came into the ght 14 pounds heavier than Mayweather, was coming off a solid victory over Andre Berto. In the fourth round, the two ghters were locked in a corner exchanging blows when Ortiz thrust his head up and forward to hit the chin of Mayweather, who had his back to the ropes. Mayweather immediately complained to the referee, who stopped the ght to deduct a point from Ortiz. Ortiz then apologised to Mayweather for the rst time. I am not a dirty ghter. I told Floyd I didnt mean to do that, Ortiz said. The ghters then moved to the centre of the ring and Ortiz put his arms around Mayweather and apologised again. Ortiz dropped his hands, stepped back as Mayweather caught him unaware with a quick left that stunned Ortiz before knocking him down with a straight right hand. I got hit with a dirty shot. It is protect yourself at all times. I hit him with a left hook-right hand that ended the bout, Mayweather said. Ortiz had been ghting well up to that point, showing he was more than just Mayweathers tuneup for a possible ght with Filipino champ Manny Pacquiao next year. MORALES WINS VACANT WBC TITLE

VETERAN boxer Erik Morales, the last ghter to beat Manny Pacquiao, stopped fellow Mexican Pablo Cesar Cano to win a title in a fourth weight division yesterday. Morales battered and bloodied the younger Cano before the ght was stopped at the end of the 10th round by the corner of Cano, who was a late replacement and took the ght on with just a few days notice. With the win Morales earned the vacant World Boxing Council junior welterweight belt. Canos corner stopped the ght as blood streamed down the left side of his face from a cut around his eye. He was ghting outside of Mexico for the rst time. Morales improved to 52-7 with 36 knockouts, while Cano dropped to 22-11. The ght was featured on the

POLICE ARREST FOUR IN MANNY HOME BURGLARY

FOUR PEOPLE were arrested for burglary at the Los Angeles area home of Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacquaio, authorities said yesterday. Police said no one was in the house at the time of the incident and an attorney for the Asian southpaw, who also serves as a Philippines Congressman, said nothing was taken from the house. Sheriffs detectives were in the neighborhood where Pacquiaos house is located on another matter and saw the burglary in progress, ofcials said. Identities of the four people involved have not been released, but they were being questioned by police. Charges have not yet been led against them.

I am an alcoholic who liked to cross-dress

HE WAS the original Golden Boy of boxing, hailed by presidents for his clean-cut, iconic image and worshipped by his millions of fans. But now Oscar De La Hoya (pix) has confessed that he is an alcoholic and drug addict who dressed in drag and cheated regularly on his wife, mother of two of his ve children. The ght game is still reeling from the shock. After spending the last three months in rehab in a Californian clinic, the Mexican-American idol stepped back into the spotlight this weekend as the promoter of last nights world-title bout in Las Vegas between his former opponent Floyd Mayweather Jnr and Victor Ortiz, speaking openly of his other ght outside the ring that drove him to the brink of suicide. What makes his confessional so astounding is that here was no archetypal washed-up stumblebum, with which boxing is sadly familiar, but a handsome, articulate multimillionaire boxer-businessman who converted Olympic gold in Barcelona in 1992 to two stfuls of world titles in six different weight divisions in a 16year, 55-ght career. He retired only two years ago. Muhammad Ali apart, the 38-yearold De La Hoya has been the most revered gure in US boxing during the past half-century. He now heads his own Golden Boy organisation, who have promoted top ghters including the Britons Ricky Hatton, David Haye and Amir Khan. Little could Hatton have known that when he was battling the booze himself, so was his promoter. De La Hoya was last here in April when

Khan fought Paul McCloskey in Manchester. We never guessed a thing, said Khan. This has been a complete shock. Oscar presented himself as such a sober gure. Yet now the tarnished Golden Boy has confessed: I havent been truly sober since I was eight, recalling how he was encouraged to sip beer at family parties. A sip sounds harmless, but after about 20 you are drunk. I remember the rst time when I passed out. My mother whacked me pretty good. Before he entered the Betty Ford clinic in Malibu, De La Hoya had fought the inuence of alcohol

throughout his career. It was a monster so big I cannot describe it. Im surprised it hasnt killed me, he said, adding: There were drugs. My drug of choice was cocaine. The last two years I depended more on the alcohol than the cocaine. It took me to a place where I felt safe. He also admitted to crossdressing. When photos of him in shnets appeared in a magazine four years ago he protested they were fake. Now he has revealed: Yes, it was me. I am tired now of lying, of lying to the public and of lying to myself. Other pictures showed one of the most macho men in the United States in bras, short skirts and womens underwear. I was under the inuence of alcohol and drugs. I got involved in some very bad things. Apart from the drugs and booze there were the women. We are not talking a Tiger Woods here, but I was unfaithful. Ive sought forgiveness. I dont want to say were ne, but Millie (his second wife of 10 years) is a very good person and it hurts me a lot. Those nights when I was drunk and on my own, I asked myself: Is it really worth continuing to live? I contemplated suicide. Im incapable of doing something like that, but I did think about it. At times I would even drink a tequila before a ght. In 2009 I overdosed on cocaine and alcohol and wound up hospitalised. I knew then I was going to end up dead or in jail. In May he nally checked himself into rehab. Now, I honestly feel as though I was born again. I feel better than ever. Addiction is the hardest battle of my life. This is sort of like training for a ght that never comes. The Independent

Justin Rose to the lead

> Englishman red a two-under 69 while top rivals faltered
USTIN ROSE red a two-under 69 while top rivals faltered yesterday, leaving the Englishman with a fourshot lead after the third round of the US$8 million (RM24m) US PGA Tour BMW Championship. Britains Rose nished 54 holes on 13under 200 to seize command at the penultimate event of the US PGA playoffs, while his 36-hole co-leader, American Mark Wilson, struggled to a 77 to stumble back into a share of seventh. Another American, Webb Simpson, was only two shots back when the day began but a double bogey at 17 dropped him to a 73 for the day and six adrift for the tournament. Rose sank back-to-back birdie putts at the fourth and fth holes, took a bogey at the par-3 12th but answered it with a birdie on the very next hole and parred his way to the clubhouse on a cool and breezy day at Cog Hill.

Justin Rose of England hits his rst shot on the eighth hole during the third round of the BMW Championship at Cog Hill Golf & Country Club yesterday.

I was aware that it was a pretty tricky day and guys werent going low, Rose said. Pretty happy to get it in where I was. Australian John Senden, ghting to qualify for the Presidents Cup, red a 70 to grab second on 204, one stroke ahead of American Bill Haas and Aussie Geoff Ogilvy, also trying to secure Presidents Cup and Tour Championship spots. Im trying not to think about it but it creeps into your mind, Ogilvy said. Rose won titles last year at the US PGA Memorial and National events but has struggled to close out victories, squandering a three-stroke lead to lose at Hartford last year but winning by one at the National after leading by four. Ive been there a little bit last year won one, lost one when I was in a situation like this, so Ive got some good experience on which to count, Rose said. Just keep seeing good shots and keep

playing one shot at a time. I dont think you can get defensive. A four-shot lead isnt really a big enough lead to waste holes. Only the top 30 players in season points after this weeks 70-man event will advance to next weeks season-ending Tour Championship, where the $10 million playoff prize will be awarded. Ogilvy stood 26th in projected points. After three rounds, Im in reasonable shape, Ogilvy said. If I have a good round tomorrow, Ill be golng again next week. Rose and Senden look to have jumped into the top 30 if they can avoid a last-day collapse while South Korean Yang YongEun clings to the 30th and last Tour Championship spots based on current position. A victory next week by any of the top ve players in points would secure the playoff prize, while the other 25 qualiers will need help to move into the top spot even with a triumph. - AFP

B R I E F S CHAMPIONS SERBIA STAY ALIVE

DEFENDING CHAMPIONS Serbia stayed alive in their Davis Cup seminal when Viktor Troicki and Nenad Zimonjic defeated Argentinas Juan Ignacio Chela and Juan Monaco 7-6 (7-4), 6-4, 6-2 to trail 2-1 overall. After world No. 1 Novak Djokovic pulled out of the opening singles rubber on Friday, Serbia slumped 2-0 down overnight. But yesterday Troicki and Zimonjic took a tense tiebreak and then battled back from 4-1 down in the second set, winning ve games in succession, roared on by a 15,000-strong crowd.

BAD LIGHT SAVES AUSSIES

FADING LIGHT forced the suspension of the Australia-Switzerland Davis Cup World Group playoff yesterday, with Lleyton Hewitt and Stanislas Wawrinka into the nal set of the deciding match. Switzerlands Wawrinka was two sets to one up and leading 5-3 in the fth when the match referee decided it was too dark to continue. The two players will come back today to complete the match, with Wawrinka leading 4-6, 6-4, 6-7 (7-9), 6-4, 5-3. World No. 3 Roger Federer earlier levelled the best-ofve tie at 2-2 when he beat Bernard Tomic in four sets 6-2, 7-5, 3-6, 6-3. The winner of the tie will play in the top tier World Group in 2012, while the loser will be forced into regional qualifying. The experienced Hewitt will have to win his rst serve when play resumes today just to stay in the encounter. Wawrinka struggled with injury and indiffer- ent form in losing his opening singles match to Tomic on Friday, and then the doubles on Saturday. But he put his troubles behind him to push Hewitt to the brink in what has so far been a magnicent display from both players.

TEEN TITAN THOMPSON TAKES CHARGE

US TEEN LEXI THOMPSON, trying to become the youngest winner in the LPGAs 61-year history, red a ve-under 67 yesterday to seize a ve-stroke lead at the Navistar Classic. Prodigy Thompson, who turned 16 last February, nished 54 holes on 15-under 201 at the US$1.3 million (RM3.9m) event and was poised to shatter LPGA age marks and collect her rst elite-level victory. I always go into every tournament wanting to win, Thompson said. Im at 15, so my goal is to take it one shot at a time and try to get it to 20. South Korean Meena Lee was second on 206 with Englands Karen Stupples, Becky Morgan of Wales and American Tiffany Joh sharing third on 208, seven adrift of Thompsons pace. Its the second time this season that Thompson, not yet an LPGA member, has challenged for a record-smashing title.

Sloppy England
> Johnson fumes as England repeat their mistakes

PARRA GUIDES FRANCE TO CANADA WIN

MORGAN PARRA guided France to a 46-19 win over Canada in their second World Cup match yesterday to remain unbeaten in Pool A alongside New Zealand. In a game littered with elementary errors, Parra kicked four conversions and ve of his six penalties, including three in nine minutes before halftime that crucially saw France build a substantial lead they never ceded. Winger Vincent Clerc bagged a hattrick of tries and fullback Damien Traille also crossed the whitewash, while Francois Trinh-Duc kicked a drop-goal. Canada, surprise 25-20 winners over Tonga in their opening pool match, remained within touch of the French thanks to a Ryan Smith try, two penalties and a conversion from James Pritchard, and two drop-goals by Ander Monro. Last week was a difcult rst match for us, said stand-in captain Aurelien Rougerie of Frances 47-21 over Japan in their opener. I am very proud of the French team. Its never easy against Canada. Canadian skipper Pat Riordan said of his players: I am so proud of them, the way they played. We showed we can stick with the top teams like that.

NGLANDS World Cup campaign will be a short one if they do not quickly learn the lessons from another indisciplined, over-complicated display in yesterdays 41-10 victory over Georgia, coach Martin Johnson (pix) said. England ultimately emerged comfortable winners of the Pool B clash, with two tries each for Shontayne Hape and Chris Ashton and others from Delon Armitage and Manu Tuilagi. However, for the second game in a row they had a man sin-binned after repeated team indiscipline as they gave away 11 rst-half penalties. Luckily for England, the Georgians failed to cash in on their chances because of wayward goalkicking. It wasnt good enough and if we are happy with those standards well go home early, Johnson, with his brow at its most furrowed, told reporters. The guys need to be a bit more patient and trust our defence. Some of it was sloppiness, a bit of rustiness maybe and the guys were a bit over-eager at times, but they have to learn they will be penalised. We need to be a bit sharper and we are under no illusions that we need to get better. Johnson has spent most of his threeand-half-year tenure as England boss trying to bang home the message that rugby remains a simple sport at heart yet it seems he is still not getting through. Im just a bit annoyed, he said. There

were lots of chances for us to do better. When we executed simply we made it easy but we just over-complicated it and the higher level you go the simpler it is. Johnson said England should have taken the ball into contact more and tried to build from there. We dont have to try to force that miracle pass, pressure would have given us those opportunities," he added. When we ran well they didnt really got hold of us and maybe the ball was available for unloading and boys were throwing things they shouldnt have done.

If ever we needed an understanding about what things are about at this level then watching Ireland v Australia last night was it -- its a simple game. Captain Lewis Moody, playing his rst match of the tournament after recovering from a knee injury, concurred. We wanted to play some rugby today, we endeavoured to do that, but we turned the ball over too much, he said. It was a frustrating game but the Georgians fronted up, we were just a bit naive at ruck-time in the rst half. We had so much potential to score but we forced it too much when we should have held on to it. Georgia coach Richie Dixon was delighted with his teams effort after a disappointing opening defeat against Scotland. We certainly gained a lot of respect from the team we played against and from those watching and if we had converted those kicks it would have been a lot closer, said the Scot after watching Merab Kvirikashvili miss ve of his six penalty attempts. The contact area is something we have been concentrating on and I think England were surprised by our ferocity. We froze in attack really against Scotland so weve certainly demonstrated we can attack as well as defend but we have to learn to turn territory and pressure into points. We put an awful lot in today and didnt get much out. Reuters

MUGGED WALLABIES SAY ITS NOT OVER YET: HORWILL

THE WALLABIES are looking to regroup and regain momentum in their next World Cup match against the United States after their stunning unravelling against spirited Ireland on Saturday. The Australians were clueless to combat Irelands tormenting pressure and lost the high-intensity contest 15-6 at Eden Park to virtually hand the Irish control of Pool C. Instead of facing Wales, Samoa or Fiji in the last eight, the Wallabies are now likely to have a much tougher quarternal against defending champions South Africa. It was a sombre Wallaby camp who left Auckland yesterday for Wellington where their third group match against the 18th-ranked United States on Friday takes on extra signicance. It was certainly a taste of reality but its not the taste were unfamiliar with, coach Robbie Deans said. Its part of rugby and that potential is there every time you enter a game. The Australians were beaten up at the contact and in the scrums and playmaking halves, Will Genia and Quade Cooper, were starved of front-foot ball to launch attacks. We were poor, we didnt allow our backs to get any continuity because we were getting stied at the breakdown, skipper James Horwill (pix) said. There are a number of things that we didnt do well enough, and the Irish did better than us. Obviously the breakdown was an area where we were quite poor and they were very good. They had a set plan to slow us up and they did it well and youve got to give them credit for that.

IRISH VICTORY KNOCKS SOUTHERN ARROGANCE: ALL BLACKS

ANY World Cup condence among the big three southern teams New Zealand, Australia and South Africa has been knocked by Irelands upset win over Australia, the All Blacks said yesterday. Irelands 15-6 win in a tryless match opened the way for a southern hemisphere northern hemisphere nal after pre-tournament predictions had centred on a New Zealand Australia showdown. It just shows a little bit of arrogance we sometimes have in the southern hemisphere we think were the best teams in the world and Ireland showed thats not the case, All Blacks wing Richard Kahui said. It just shows this World Cup is not a two-team competition as some people thought it was going to be. Theres a lot of teams out there that can win it and thats good.

Steady Sri Lanka build lead over Australia

ANGELO MATHEWS moved to within 15 runs of a maiden Test century as Sri Lanka steadily extended their rst innings lead against Australia in the third and nal Test yesterday. In reply to Australias rst innings total of 316, hosts Sri Lanka, trailing the three-Test series 1-0, ended day three on 428 for six wickets for a lead of 112 runs. At stumps, Mathews remained unbeaten on 85 off 207 balls with debutant Saminda Eranga (5 not out) keeping him company. Mathews, who has twice been dismissed in the nineties in his 16-test career, was involved in two useful partnerships that enabled Sri Lanka to move ahead of Australias total. He stitched together a record fth-wicket stand of 121 with captain Tillakaratne Dilshan and followed it up with another partnership of 81 with Prasanna Jayawardene. Dilshan returned to form with a well-paced knock of 83 off 121 balls, which included 14 fours, before he edged Trent Copeland to wicketkeeper Brad Haddin standing up to the stumps. The ball hit Haddin on his right thigh before he held on to it, bringing an end to a partnership that was Sri Lankas highest for the fth wicket against Australia. Reuters

WALES COACH Warren Gatland praised the character of his team after they ground out a deserved 17-10 win over Samoa in Hamilton yesterday to record their rst win over the Pacic islanders at a rugby World Cup. After a 17-16 loss to South Africa in the Pool D opener, Wales knew yesterdays game was crucial against a Samoa side that had beaten Namibia 49-12. Samoa have also been something of a bogey team for Wales, winning their two previous World Cup encounters in 1991 and 1999. We knew today was a must-win game, said Wales coach Warren Gatland. I thought we showed some great character today. To do well at a World Cup you need a little bit of luck and you need to show some character and I thought we did that today.

Welsh character made the difference, says Gatland

I question perhaps, a few years ago or 12 months ago, we might not have won that game. Wales proved the more expansive team at times, trying to run the ball out from their own line on one occasion with wing Shane Williams proving a handful on the left ank. Gatland told reporters this had not been part of the gameplan. I thought in the rst half we tried to play a bit too much rugby, particularly in our own half, he added. Maybe we should have played a bit more territory and that put us under pressure with a few turnovers. The tricky pool also includes Fiji and Namibia, as well the Springboks, and Samoa will now need to beat the defending world champions if they are to have any realistic hope of advancing.

The rst points of the game came from the boot of Wales fullback James Hook before Samoa levelled through fullback Paul Williams. Hook capitalised when Samoa were caught for collapsing a scrum to put Wales ahead 6-3 but Samoa came back strongly and were only denied a try when anker Maurie Faasavalu was penalised for a double movement when he crossed over the line. Samoa breached the Welsh line on the stroke of halftime when prop Anthony Perenise crashed over. In the second half Rhys Priestland took over the kicking duties from the injured Hook, knocking two kicks over, and a try to Shane Williams was enough to see off Samoa. Reuters

Adebayor still bears the scars from Togo tragedy

E
MMANUEL ADEBAYOR wants to be loved. That makes it hard to explain his decision to join Tottenham Hotspur, whose supporters have abused him for scoring against them regularly and often, particularly for Arsenal but he has come through far worse ordeals. He survived an armed attack on the Togo team bus in Angola during the 2010 African Cup of Nations in which teammates were wounded and ofcials lost their lives and so has a better perspective than most on footballs place in the scheme of things. When you realise that I was one minute from passing away, its all nothing, he said. I tell myself: Adebayor, just live your life. People got shot two seats in front of me. When you have been through those things, youre another person. On the eighth of January 2010 it could have been Adebayor gone, nished, over. In Madrid last season there were games I wasnt playing, but I was just enjoying life, laughing when I came on because I was a footballer and I had a chance to play. When youre younger and you havent been through things, you dont understand. If Im told to sit on the bench Ill be happy to. We woke up on 8 January, we were going to the African Cup of Nations, we were singing on the bus, we ended up carrying a dead body back home. Playing only 10 minutes, being on the bench, those things are nothing. Adebayor, who joined Manchester City after three-and-a-half seasons at Arsenal, is no longer part of City manager Roberto Mancinis plans, and is on a season-long loan at White Hart Lane after a similar arrangement with Real Madrid last season. I want to feel love again and I had a good discussion on the phone with the boss, Harry Redknapp, and he showed me the ambition, where the club wanted to go to, Adebayor said. Im here and very happy. Im loved by my teammates and I love all the players. In a fortnight that will mean facing Arsenal, having already roused the ire of his former fans with an extravagant celebration after scoring against them for Manchester City at Eastlands. I had the chance to play for Arsenal, I had a fantastic moment, they made me one of the best strikers in the world. But you have to move on. What happened at Man City was a big mistake. I regret doing that not scoring, but my celebration. But, trust me, if I have to score against Arsenal again, I will do it. Im a footballer, I have to be a professional on the pitch. However, Adebayor admits that he fell out with Mancini, and his

They asked us to do that as a punishment but we did it in a positive way. He would have stayed with Real if an offer had been made. Politically Madrid is difcult, and its not just one man, he said. If it was up to Mourinho I could be there now, because Im happy what I did there last season. But hes not the person who can decide. He can ask, and I think he did, but he gave me the advice to come to Tottenham and I have huge respect for him. He likens Redknapp to Mourinho in his man-management, and revealed that Redknapp promised to do everything in his power to keep Spurs competitive by retaining Luka Modric. Adebayor scored on his Spurs debut as he did for Arsenal, City and Real at Wolves eight days ago and believes that a top-four nish is possible, as is extending his stay. Ive got to enjoy myself and then there is a (chairman), manager and the fans everyone will decide if they want to keep me for another year. As a player you always want to stay at a club where you have fun, but I still belong to Man City and who knows, if I nish top scorer in the League, City will call me back. Sometimes football can be very funny. At the end of the season well see Ill be more than happy to stay here. That could be connected to his becoming a father, adding to responsibilities he has taken on in Africa. He has paid to rebuild a school and two hospitals in Togo and backed a drinking water scheme in Ghana. We always have to give something back, he said. I come from one of the smallest countries in the world to where I am today and Im blessed. I started from a place where I didnt even have any boots, today I have everything I wanted. Ive played in all the big games around Europe. Ive worked hard, but you need luck as well to be there at the right moment, and without self-belief, with all that happened after I left Arsenal, I wouldnt have kept going. People try to criticise you or write some stuff on my Twitter, but it gives me motivation. It means these people have taken time and they have respect and love for you. When there is no message from anyone on Facebook or Twitter, then Ill start panicking. Then Ill know the love is gone. The Independent

Mowbray delighted by Middlesbrough spirit

MIDDLESBROUGH manager Tony Mowbray (pix) believes his players have the ghting spirit essential to win promotion after they moved to the top of the Championship with a 1-0 win at Crystal Palace. Mowbrays side are one point clear of second placed Brighton, who crashed to a 1-0 defeat at Leicester. Marvin Emnes gave Middlesbrough the lead when he red home in the 65th minute, but the visitors had to hold their nerve in a tense nish after Joe Bennetts dismissal for two bookings in the closing stages. We can talk about the quality of the commitment. Weve scored a lot of goals this season but were a team that is working hard for each other, Mowbray said. The quality and the grit of the side was shown. I didnt think it would be an expansive match with load of goals in it. To score against Palace is a difcult thing to do. At the King Power Stadium, Gus Poyets Brighton were beaten for the rst time this season. After enjoying the better of the rst half, Sven Goran Erikssons Leicester team went ahead in the 46th minute when Japan midelder Yuki Abe met Darius Vassells cross to earn the Foxes just their third win of the season. Marcos Painters late dismissal rounded off a miserable day for the Seagulls, and Poyet conceded his side had been well below their best. We were not good enough technically for some reason. We were chasing the game and made too many bad decisions, he said. But if someone had told me that we would have started the season unbeaten until our seventh game I would have taken it. Derby boss Nigel Clough saluted his side after the Rams recovered from the second-minute dismissal of goalkeeper Frankie Fielding to beat local rivals Nottingham Forest 2-1 at the City Ground. Fielding was sent off for bringing down Ishmael Miller in the box in the opening stages, and when Andy Reid scored the resulting penalty it looked grim for the visitors. Cloughs side rallied though, with Jamie Ward equalising in the 29th minute before Jeff Hendrick drilled home a 72ndminute winner. In the context of the moment, coming off the back of consecutive defeats and against the adversity of the opening two minutes, I thought it was an absolutely remarkable performance staggering, said Clough, whose father Brian managed both clubs. It was beyond what we could have expected. I would have taken a draw at any point during the game. West Ham dropped points on their travels for the rst time this season after a bruising derby against Millwall nished 0-0 at The Den. Much of the pre-match attention had focused on the bitter nature of the rivalry between these two London clubs, which led to major disorder when the teams last met in the League Cup in 2009. Thankfully this xture passed off more peacefully and neither side could be unhappy with a point after Liam Trotter missed a good opportunity for the Lions and David Bentley squandered a sitter for the Hammers. Bentley had an unbelievable chance but he put it wide, Hammers boss Sam Allardyce said. In the end we are disappointed we didnt win it but we respect the point that weve got. Elsewhere, Blackpool and Cardiff shared a 1-1 draw, 10-man Leeds won 2-1 against Bristol City, while Peterborough beat Burnley 2-1. Hull enjoyed a 1-0 win over 10-man Portsmouth, Andy Grays 57th-minute header earned Barnsley a 1-1 draw at home to Watford and Reading defeated Doncaster 2-0. - AFP

Le Saux, who also took evening classes in antiques, never quite tted in during his rst spell at Stamford Bridge. He wrote later that he was regarded as an over-earnest young swot, felt isolated, and a whipping boy. He added that players who have been educated academically often had such problems. A dressing room can still be a hard place, and Le Sauxs observation that footballers are insular remains true to an extent, but the game has moved on, and so have Chelsea. English voices remain the dominant ones in the dressing room, and Matas studying is rare enough for one reporter to tell him yesterday he was quite intelligent for a footballer, but in the wake of Glenn Hoddle and Ruud Gullit, Gianluca Vialli and Gianfranco Zola, an interest in education no longer makes a player the easy target Le Saux felt he was. Indeed, in modern football intelligence is an advantage. Mata, who embarked on a sports science degree in his native Spain, and is now doing a long-distance course in physical education and marketing from the University of Madrid, proved smart enough in his rst ofcial press conference yesterday to negotiate all the traps with aplomb. He swerved past several attempts to draw him into a discussion about Fernando Torress lack of goals, he avoided besmirching English footballers by comparison with Spanish ones, and deadbatted queries about his relationship with Fabio Capello at Real Madrid. He spoke in Spanish, but did not need questions translated. I dont think football and studying are mutually exclusive, he said. I am focused on my career but like to enjoy other things, like study for example. It is certainly a change from footballers more traditional leisure pursuits - the pub, the bookies and the golf course. In this respect Mata recalls the days of another nimble Chelsea winger with quick feet and an inquiring mind, Pat Nevin. On the pitch this intelligence will also be valuable to Andre VillasBoass attempts to remodel Chelsea upon what Mata suggested would be more dynamic lines. Perez presence brings swift end to La Ligas nancial revolution

THE SPANISH revolution looks like being still-born after an attempt to introduce greater parity in television income largely evaporated. Last week Jose Mara Del Nido, the president of Seville, rallied a dozen clubs behind an effort to restore competitive balance to La Liga by reducing Barcelona and Real Madrids currently overwhelming share of TV income. However, according to leaks from a meeting of clubs last Thursday, which, unusually, was attended by Reals powerful president Florentino Perez, Del Nido is now only backed by Espanyol and Real Betis. Juan Mata was very diplomatic when he was unveiled by Chelsea, but he did make one notable criticism. When comparing La Liga and the Premier League he said: Unfortunately in Spain there is a lack of real competition. From JanuaryFebruary it is clear that there is a big difference in the form of Real Madrid and Barcelona and the rest. Here it is different. Critics will suggest it is only different to a degree, instead of a two-horse race there are four or ve in runners, but the gap between top clubs and the rest is more bridgable at individual matches. From the same 76 games, Barcelona and Real won 188 points last season, the Premier leagues leading two (Manchester United and Chelsea) won 151. Matas Valencia came third last season, 21 points behind third-placed Real, 19 points ahead of relegated Deportivo La Coruna. This season began with Barcelona beating Villarreal (fourth last season) 5-0 and Madrid defeating Real Zaragoza 6-0. Spanish clubs negotiate their own television contracts, so the big two make a fortune and the rest get scraps. Real and Barcelona received 135m (RM540m) from domestic rights last season, 10 clubs received 15m or less. In England, Manchester United received 60.4m (RM302m), Blackpool, who were the divisions lowest earners, 39.1m (RM195.9m). One consequence of this is that several clubs had trouble paying players leading to the players strike that forced the cancellation of the seasons opening weekend. It was against this backdrop that Del Nido described La Liga as the greatest pile of junk in Europe and pushed for reform along the lines of the English model. Florentino looks to have outmanouvered him, which is bad news for their English Champions League rivals as well as the likes of Seville. The Independent

condence in his ideas, said Mata of the manager. We talked about the different styles that could be used. Hes in favour of an offensive and dynamic style of football. He showed that at Porto where he won so many trophies last season. Torres, he said, had encouraged him to join Chelsea, saying it would be excellent for me to come to a bigger team, with excellent players. Of Torress goal shortage, he said: Its just a question of time. Hes a great player who has demonstrated he can score lot of goals. Everybody goes through phases but this will be his season. I believe Fernando is still the same player [he was]. He had a great game against Leverkusen and contributing a great deal to Chelsea as their striker. Mata said of his own best position, Im not a pure winger. I like being an offensive midelder and can play in different positions. I have no preference left or right and can play both sides and in the middle. I like to be between the lines. Mata, now 23, joined Real Madrid at 15 but only played for the B team, Castilla. As his 19th birthday approached his father and agent, a former player with Real Oviedo also called Juan, suggested Madrid should offer him a contract as other clubs were interested. Madrid, then coached by Capello, demurred and Mata joined Valencia. Did Capello not give Mata a chance? he was asked. Again the careful reply: I was young then. My contract ended and I went to Valencia. I didnt have much of opportunity to interact with Capello. It may not have been Capellos say. He would soon be red while sporting director Predrag Mijatovic was signing another winger, Royston Drenthe (now on loan to Everton). Whoever made the call made a mistake. Reals share of the 23.5m (RM117.5m) Chelsea paid Valencia last month was just 460,000 (RM2.3m) The Independent.

IONEL MESSI grabbed a hattrick as Barcelona responded emphatically to questions over their motivation by demolishing Osasuna 8-0 in a staggering display of attacking football at Camp Nou yesterday. Messi scored his rst goal after just ve minutes as the Spanish and European champions rebounded from two successive draws to deliver the perfect response to critics who claimed they had become complacent with success. Cesc Fabregas, playing in attack with Pedro Rodriguez rested, soon scored their second before David Villa rounded the keeper just after the half hour mark and slotted home. An own-goal from Ruben Gonzalez added to Osasunas misery and Messi was on target again before the break. There was no drop in pace this time from Barca as in their games against Real Sociedad and AC Milan, and they continued to punish Osasuna. Xavi lobbed the keeper and then Villa and

Messi both struck again to wrap up the scoring. It will be a warning to Real Madrid who face Levante later that they will not let go of their league title without a ght. Barca coach Pep Guardiola denied there was ever a problem inside the dressing room and that he was never worried by the criticism. I wasnt angry, people said I was angry but it wasnt the case. Obviously there is a part of the media which wants Barcelona to do badly and likewise there is a section which wants Real Madrid to do so, he said. I am not angry because my players havent given me a reason to be. I defend my players and my job is to convince them that they can win every game. If one day I think my players havent worked hard enough I will say it. A Frederic Kanoute goal after halftime gave Sevilla a 1-0 win over Real Sociedad in yesterdays late game. The Andalusian side dominated but found it difcult to break down a determined Sociedad. Alvaro Negredo and Jesus Navas both went close in the rst half but it wasnt until the 53rd minute they nally made the breakthrough with Kanoute ring in a knock down from Negredo. A poachers goal from in-form Roberto Soldado gave Valencia a 1-0 win over Sporting

Gijon to maintain their 100% start to the season. Sporting, who are still to pick up a point, started strongly with plenty of possession but it was Valencia who took the lead through Soldado who has now scored ve of Valencias six goals so far. Sloppy defending from the home defence gave Jonas Goncalves plenty of time to shoot but while the keeper Juan Pablo saved well, Soldado pounced on the rebound. The game showed the personality of the team and it was a group performance. This was a difcult game against a side which is battling to pick up points so we can congratulate ourselves for the way we played and worked hard, said Valencia coach Unai Emery. A deected Martin Demichelis header, which came off Pablo Caceres, gave Malaga a deserved 1-0 victory against Mallorca and Granada picked up their rst points of the season with Ikechuwku Uche scoring in a 1-0 victory over Villarreal. JUVENTUS maintained their perfect start to the season with a 1-0 win at Siena on Sunday in a match that saw the Turin clubs new coach Antonio Conte get one over on the team he left in the summer. Conte cut his teeth as an assistant coach at the modest Tuscan club and returned last year to lead them to promotion back into the top-ight. However, his new-look Juve team fresh from thumping Parma last week spoiled Sienas rst home game of the campaign by running out 1-0 winners at the Artemio Franchi stadium, Alessandro Matri getting the games only goal nine minutes into the second half after Mirko Vucinic had done the spadework. Elsewhere, Udinese made it two wins from two as they got the better of Fiorentina at the Stadio Friuli. Antonio Di Natale got the breakthrough for the hosts from the penalty spot eight minutes in before Mauricio Isla doubled the lead prior to the half-hour mark. Lazio have high hopes for this season, and after drawing at champions Milan in their opening game they were looking for a rst win when they hosted Genoa in Rome. AFP

Ten-man Bremen go top, Cologne oor Leverkusen

TEN-MAN Werder Bremen went top of the German league yesterday thanks to a 1-1 draw at Nuremberg despite having Germany goalkeeper Tim Wiese sent off. With Bayern Munich playing at Schalke later, Bremen took the opportunity to go top as they picked up a point, despite losing Wiese after just 17 minutes. The 29-year-old was shown a straight red after a desperate, rugbystyle tackle on Nuremberg striker Christian Eigler, who was through on goal, which forced Bremen to bring on reserve goalkeeper Sebastian Mielitz. Werder then took the lead when Turkey midelder Mehmet Ekici scored against his former club just seven minutes later. Torrential rain threatened to ood the Nuremberg pitch in the rst half and delayed the start of the second, but the hosts levelled on 62 minutes with a late header from defender Philipp Wollscheid. Gloomy Wenger bemoans fragile Arsenal defence

ARSENE WENGER (pix) vowed to carry on despite labelling Arsenals start to the season terrible following another defeat. A 4-3 setback at struggling Blackburn Rovers on Saturday left the London club with just four points from ve league games. They remain without a Premier League away win in seven attempts and have now conceded 12 times in their last two domestic away matches. And Wenger did not hold back after watching his side twice blow the lead against a Blackburn side that had begun the day rooted to the foot of the table. At the moment we are not capable of focusing for 90 minutes from a defensive point of view, said the bitterly frustrated Arsenal manager. When you are 2-1 up with the quality that we have, it is important that you dont give cheap goals away like we did. Regarding his sides start to the season, Wenger added: Its terrible. Its just not good enough and of course we are very frustrated. The number of goals we have conceded is just not good enough. On the other hand I believe the group will take off. But its important we get good results. Wenger said Arsenal were still nursing the psychological wounds inicted by Manchester United in an 8-2 mauling at Old Trafford three weeks ago. At the moment defensively we are fragile because our condence is gone due to what happened at Old Trafford, he said. But Wenger brushed off suggestions that he may be tempted to consider his future at the club, where he was appointed manager 15 years ago this month. Speculation is part of modern life. My future is focusing on what I do well, which is give my best to the club, he said. What can I do? Not talk too much. Arsenal were on course for a rst Premier League away win since April 10 when goals from Gervinho and Mikel Arteta put them 2-1 ahead at halftime at Ewood Park. But Blackburn, without a win since the nal day of last season, staged a remarkable comeback to storm into a 4-2 lead. Former Everton striker Aiyegbeni Yakubu, who had scored his sides rst, made it 3-2 after Arsenals Alex Song had put through his own net to level the scores. Another own goal by Laurent Koscielny made it 4-2 before substitute Marouane Chamakh scored a late consolation. About 250 Blackburn fans marched before the game in protest at coach Steve Kean following Rovers poor start to the season. I was disappointed with that, said Kean, who only took charge last December. But even the people who did decide to demonstrate were fully behind the team when they came into the ground. I think 99% of fans decided not to demonstrate. Hopefully the 1% of fans who did demonstrate will go home happy after seeing what the lads are trying to do. I thought we were excellent and caused Arsenal all sorts of problems. The desire to win got us the points. Our second-half performance showed what weve got in that dressing room, which is 100 percent team spirit. The boys were really working hard for each other. Weve got character in the side. Weve been unfortunate not to have more points but weve got character and we showed that last season. To play against Arsenal is so difcult. You have to run for the ball and they gave everything. But the most important thing was to get three points and its a very good feeling. I think we deserved to win. Blackburn lost defender Michel Salgado with a hamstring injury in the rst half but Kean is condent the former Real Madrid full-back is not facing a prolonged spell on the sidelines. AFP

Ruthless
> United two points clear as they outclass Chelsea
ANCHESTER UNITED maintained their perfect start to the Premier League season with a 3-1 win over title rivals Chelsea yesterday. Sir Alex Fergusons side blew Chelsea away thanks to three goals in the rst half from Chris Smalling, Nani and Wayne Rooney. Fernando Torres reduced the decit soon after halftime with only his second goal for Chelsea, but later missed an open goal and United could have won by a greater margin as Rooney wasted a second half penalty. Uniteds victory equalled a club record of 18 consecutive home wins and moved them two points clear of second placed Manchester City at the top of the table and ve ahead of third placed

Chelsea. It was Chelseas rst loss under new boss Andre Villas-Boas, who tasted defeat in a league game for the rst time since April 2010 when Benca beat his Academica de Coimbra team. United, who have made their best start since 1985, took the lead in the eighth minute when Smalling was left unmarked from Ashley Youngs freekick and the defender headed past Petr Cech despite Chelseas appeals for offside. Portugal winger Nani increased Uniteds advantage in the 37th minute, cutting in from the right wing before smashing a ferocious 20-yard strike into the top corner. There was an element of good fortune about Uniteds third goal as John Terrys attempted

clearance cannoned off Nani into Rooneys path and the England forward slotted home from closerange. Torres gave Chelsea a glimmer of hope in the 46th minute when he icked a ne nish over David de Gea. They had another boost when Rooney slipped while running up to take a penalty, awarded for Jose Bosingwas trip on Nani, and saw his effort y wide in an echo of the Terry spotkick miss that helped United win the Champions League in 2008. Torres should have pulled Chelsea to within one goal in the closing stages, but the striker produced an early candidate for miss of the season as he rounded De Gea and somehow scuffed wide with an empty net at hsi mercy. MANCHESTER CITY surrendered their 100% start to the Premier League season as Fulham fought back from two goals down to draw 2-2, while Tottenham routed nine-man Liverpool 4-0 yesterday. Roberto Mancinis side, who had won their rst four matches left Craven Cottage disappointed after a second half meltdown. Sergio Aguero has been in sublime form since joining City from Atletico Madrid for a club record 38 million (RM190m) in pre-season and the Argentina forward red the visitors into the lead as he met David Silvas pass with a clinical nish in the 18th minute. Aguero seemed to have put City in total command when he steered home Edin Dzekos ick in the 46th minute for his eighth goal of the season. But Bobby Zamora got one back for Fulham in the 55th minute with a curling shot from the edge of the area and Danny Murphy completed the ghtback when his long-range shot deected in off Vincent Kompany in the 75th minute. At White Hart Lane, Harry Redknapps Tottenham took the lead early in the rst half through Luka Modrics (pix) superb strike before Liverpool duo Charlie Adam and Martin Skrtel were sent off either side of halftime. Jermain Defoe made it 2-0 and Togo striker Emmanuel Adebayor, on loan from Manchester City, struck twice to take his tally for the club to three in two games. The defeat was the heaviest suffered by Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish since he began his second spell in charge in January, as well as the biggest Spurs success against the Reds since 1963. Tottenham took the lead in the seventh minute when Croatia midelder Modric slammed a blistering shot into the top corner of Pepe Reinas goal. Scottish midelder Adam was dismissed in the 28th minute after earning a second booking with a foul on Scott Parker. Any thoughts that Liverpool could still avoid a second successive defeat were erased when Skrtel was sent off in the 63rd minute for a second booking after clattering Gareth Bale. Tottenham took full advantage of their numerical superiority. Defoe ran clear to score in the 66th minute and Adebayor tapped in after Reina spilled Defoes shot two minutes later before blasting home from close-range in stoppage time. At the Stadium of Light, Sunderland stormed into a three-goal lead before halftime against Stoke and eventually ran out 4-0 winners. Titus Bramble got the rst goal in the fth minute when Stoke goalkeeper Asmir Begovic fumbled the defenders shot over the line and an own goal from Jonathan Woodgate increased the lead in the 11th minute. Craig Gardner netted the third in the 28th minute and Sebastian Larsson emphasised Sunderlands dominance when his freekick beat Begovic in the 58th minute. AFP
