Executive Summary

Total Time: 120 min

Total No. Of Questions: 175
Marking Scheme: +4 for correct answer and –1 for wrong.

FMS paper, this time too, came up with the standard pattern of 175 questions but the
difficulty level was much higher than the previous year. Quantitative section was full
of questions on algebra, complex numbers, logarithms, mensuration and coordinate
geometry, which could have perplexed you in case you were not comfortable with
them. Reading Comprehension & English Usage sections were difficult, 2 sets on Data
Interpretation were sitters. Verbal Logic was easy. The questions in Analytical and
mathematical Reasoning section, were tough to say the least.

Since there were no sectional break-ups, the number of questions you should have
attempted is dictated by your average accuracy. The number of attempts should have
been 95+ with 90% accuracy. However, if the accuracy is of the order of 80% to
85%, the attempts should have been above 100.

However, since there was no sectional segregation of the paper, you should have
attempted most of the questions from the area, which falls in your comfort zone.
Based on the presumption that the attempts you would have made are going to fetch
you higher accuracy.

English Usage + RC

Vive la difference! Though moderately difficult, the English section was an English
buff’s delight: Five RC passages, homonyms, antonyms & synonyms, analogies in
various forms, grammar, deductive logic, it was all there for the asking. Vocabulary
played an important role in the English usage section where its contextual usage was
tested extensively. RC passages were easy to difficult with the questions demanding a
good understanding of the nuances of the text.

Reading Comprehension

There were 5 passages, and 36 questions.

Passage 1: HIV/ AIDS- 6 questions – 5 were doable.

Passage 2: US –9/11- 7 questions – 4 were doable.

Passage 3: Enron (Arthur Anderson) –7 questions – 5 were doable

Passage 4: Women empowerment – 8 questions – 4 were doable

Passage 5: Hedge funds – 8 questions – 4 were doable

Overall Analysis for English Usage and Reading Comprehension:

It was altogether a moderate section. In 50 minutes, 35 questions could have been

attempted with reasonable accuracy for a good student. One should have attempted
English Usage questions first, and moved on to the RC-section. A student with a
reasonable amount of preparation could have got 27-30 correct which translates into
a score of around 105- 115 in English.

Analytical and Verbal Reasoning

The difficulty level of this section was moderate to high. Some sets were deceptive
enough to catch your attention, albeit not that easy to solve. The set on four girls
getting grades (A,B,C) in four subjects was comparatively easy. The sets on city and
corresponding item for which they are famous and triangle-square-rectangle-circle
representing clerks-urban-graduates-govt. employees were also simple. However, the
sets on schedule of matches, marble exchange and dice outcome were demanding.

Set 1: 4 girls studying 4 subjects. This set was easy as compared to the other sets.

Set 2: There was a set on city and corresponding item for which they are famous.
This set had 4 questions and was relatively simple.

Set 3: There was a set on triangle-square-rectangle-circle representing clerks-urban-

graduates-govt. employees.This set was a simple one.

Set 4: There was also a sets on schedule of matches in which there were 9 matches
played between three teams and also there was some information given regarding
the schedule of matches. This was difficult set

Set 5: Also, there was a set on marble exchanging. There were four different types of
marbles and 4 people were exchanging their marbles in three stages. This was a
difficult set.

Considering all that, you should have invested not more than 40 minutes on this
section and attempted somewhere around 20-25 questions. A score of 80-90 will be a
good score in this section and to achieve that, you should have been choosy about
the sets to attempt and ones to reject.

Quantitative Ability and Data Interpretation

This section was heavily bent towards algebra. Questions other than those on
complex numbers, coordinate geometry, logarithms were very scarce. There were
very few questions on geometry and arithmetic, which incidentally escalated the
overall level of the section. However, the questions present were very simple and
some of them were getting cracked in half-a minute. There were 2 sets (10
questions) on DI which were a give-away. You must have got 10 on 10 in those
questions. Thus, this was a section in which you could have scored maximally in a
very short time.

If you attempted about 30-35 question, including DI; you should have secured about
100 marks from here which is a good and achievable score.

The cut off for FMS - MBA program would be around 310 – 320 and for FMS
– MBA (Management of Services) program, it would be around 280 – 300.
