B.S. IN HYDROGEOLOGY

About Hydrogeology

ydrogeologists understand the hydrologic cycle, the role of water in the environment, pollution and remediation of surface and groundwater, and managing water resources. Graduates with a bachelors degree in hydrogeology have opportunities for professional employment with private rms and local, state, and federal agencies involved in studying and understanding concerns and issues in hydrology, hydrogeology, and environmental geology.

Are you someone who?

loves the environment? wants to work with water issues? likes international travel? wants to learn about and help others? The Hydrogeology department, part of the Geological Sciences Department in the Mackay School of Earth Sciences and Engineering, prepares undergraduate students for careers in a variety of settings. The emphasis is on worldwide water issues, such as coastal and marine environments (endangered species, biodiversity and habitats, distribution of habitats), and freshwater environments (surface water, glaciers and ice caps, groundwater, water and sanitation, and inland sheries). The Student Association for International Water Issues (SAIWI) focuses on traveling to help developing countries where a great need exists for potable water supplies.

Internships and Research

We will connect you with a wide variety of well-paid summer and year-round internships to choose from, and opportunities to work in faculty research labs. You can also apply for a number of nationally-funded undergraduate research grants. Most students have job oers prior to graduation.

RON BREITMEYER
Hydrogeology major
Im an outdoors person; hiking, shing, and playing golf. Hydrogeology is my major because Ive always been interested in earth science and am concerned about the earths groundwater. After graduating from Sparks High School, I came to Mackay because of its excellent reputation in earth science education, great scholarship opportunities, and closeknit community of faculty, sta and students. I like to get involved and have been the President of the Mackay Mentors Club, a member of the Geoscience Club, and the Nevada Geological Society. I was on the Deans List and I had an on-going, paid internship with Washoe County Department of Water Resources, where I got to apply what learned in classes. I had a great time in Summer Field Camp, getting hands-on experience with the geology between SW Utah and the California coast. My education in hydrogeology, including computer-based projects and eldwork enabled me to get into a graduate hydrology program. Even without a graduate degree, Im qualied for an interesting and wellpaid, entry-level job as a hydrogeologist.
