A Call For Concern over Catastrophe Central

Some weeks ago, I posted on a known social site about the famine near our region & its dire effects. A friend also posted, calling for prayer about the emergency in the Horn of Africa. It has been featured on BBC News, CNN News, as well as other major networks. How little response there was to both my post & my friends post despite the urgent calls for prayer!! Without speculating on what efforts & prayers friends & family might already be affording, I do realize that acknowledging a deadly drought with a disastrous impact & death occurring in the thousands is not easy to do, just as it is difficult to address. Reading a UN report, I found that experts were calling for people to resist disaster fatigue, due to the intense frequency of disasters these days. Burdened for those who are starving, the desire to reach beyond our small frame of influence in northern Ethiopia burns within me. Tigray is a stressed area bordering the crisis region, though not emergency status. For us, donating funds to emergency areas becomes a necessity in this kind of situation. While Mesi & I have compassion ministries here, providing a handful of families with food & clothing gifts, we aim to donate funds to refugee camps as part of the Christian response to stem the catastrophe in the region. There are camps in Somalia, Kenya and Ethiopia. While some areas are inaccessible due to radical militant groups in Southern Somalia, we can donate to camps in our region. We hope also to visit at least one of the feeding sites to be more visibly plugged in to relief efforts; therefore, we desire your continued support for this need along with our ongoing ministries. Most essential is prayer. But do devote a response worthy of the gospel of Christ, as Christians actively concerned with knowledge of a catastrophe. DM

Much to everyones disappointment, my wife, Mesi, was not able to visit with me this past July. Her nursing studies have been constant, and she was not permitted a leave of absence for the threeweek trip scheduled. The necessity of the trip, visa renewal, however, was successful, thanks to God. Moreover, the spiritual success of the trip was evident, with Gods people at Heritage Baptist Church, Redeemer Community,

Grace Baptist, and Central Baptist Church (Shreveport-Bossier Area) all participating in the Doug & Mesi 2009 2011 Gospel of God ministry presentation. Friends also from Bossier City, Doyline, & West Monroe supported the presentation personally. It was a great joy to share with you all the things that our Lord is doing through us collectively as His people committed to making of disciples of Christ from all nations! Thank You for your effective prayers and support for me and Mesi!

Commissioned in 2004 and again in 2006, I have now served for a total of 5 years in northern Ethiopia.

~All About Mesi~

In the newsletters I prepare, I wanted to have a space that covered things about Mesis life that would share news about her and even her perspective which might be encouraging to all who have had the joy of meeting her, praying for her and supporting her! In this letter, I will also include more photos that give a peek into her life. Mesi & I are so blessed to have a life rich with Gods favor. Mesis efforts in our ministry are most essential, and without her, I would be incapable of carrying out many necessary departments of daily life and ministry. Her mastery of 3 languages, her increasing prowess in medical studies, her favor and influence with locals & fellow students, and her love for the gospel of Jesus Christ the LORD make her indispensable. Lately, because of her studies as well as my with friends in Christ is written own activi- in her smile! ties, the Asked what her #1 need arose prayer request to everyone is, to hire a she replied that I might love the h o u s e August 19, 2011 keeper full- unlovable. Smiles, laughter, finger-nail polish & multiple female voices a-chatter simultaneously: no, Im not talking about Avon! Thats what youll hear & see when Gods Girls are together. But dont miss the Bibles! Or the prayer times! The photo to the right especially captures what its all about: beginning the morning with prayer and fasting, the girls spent their Wednesday abstaining from food. Afternoon, they met together in our home for ladies corporate prayer to wrap up the program before taking a late lunch. So. . .why were they fasting & praying most of the day?? On Friday night, the girls will go out!! Girls night out!! That is, Gods Girls night out! Where to?? To the bars, the pubs,

and local brothels to meet young ladies who are involved in a very risqu business & to shine for Jesus Christ the Lord, to share a better way, THE WAY, the life of faith in Jesus. The girls will attempt engaging these bar-ladies in spiritual conversations, persuading them to join them for Bible studies, or fingernailpainting (and witnessing) parties, or tea, to talk more about life in God. This is a heartbreaking ministry that requires fortitude, sacrifice, and belief in the words of men like Isaiah, who said Gods Word never returns void. Will you pray for the Gods Girls & for gospel success? God bless you, dear partners!!
