HOWARD CITY HARVEST FESTIVAL
This years Build your own Scare-
crow at the 2011 Harvest Festival was
a big hit! Even though all the material
is provided at no cost, there were sev-
eral contestants who brought in their
own props. The judges, Joane & Ken
Cook (2011 Grand Marshalls) had their
work cut out for them. First place went
to Leah & Logan Halstedt and Emily
Miller who held the title for two years
in a row now. Madison Thun came in
second for a spooky spectacular. Third
place went to Grace & Emma Flanders
and Alexis Davison. They also have held
their spot for two years. Its always in-
teresting to see how contestants create
a scarecrow masterpiece. Thank you to
those who took part in this family fun
festive activity, Paige Denslow and Te-
sha Gould.
BUILD YOUR OWN SCARECROW
BUILD YOUR OWN SCARECROW BUSINESS DIVISON
The Harvest Festival Committee
would like to extend their apprecia-
tion to all the businesses who partici-
pated in the 2011 Business Scarecrow
Contest. This year there were ten en-
tries all of which were brilliantly dis-
played. The Cooks (2011 Grand Mar-
shalls) and Kailey Grospin (Howard
City Harvest Festival Queen) were
this years judges. The Cooks were
amazed at the creativity and inge-
nuity that the participants put into
the displays all of which didnt make
the decision easy for them. But after
much collaboration, the fnal decision
was in; this years winner was the Di-
ary Bear who presented The Wizard
of Oz.
While presenting the trophy, we
discovered it was Carlie Prescotts
ideas for the Oz theme but it was
whole heartily a group effort. We are
a team here at Diary Bear chimed
Jacquelyn Ducat. Once the theme
was decided, the tasks were divided
up and everyone collaborated to
make it happen. Thank you again for
the businesses that made this year a
success. A great deal of time, effort
and dedication goes into building a
display and we are all grateful. Thank
you-Paige Denslow and Tesha Gould.

The Saga Continues
TO THE EDITOR:
Even before the ink was dry on my ap-
proval from the township for my green-
house, on the north side of M-82, I received
a letter from the supervisor that I was in vi-
olation with my business operation on the
south side of M-82. In last months, Let-
ter to the Editor, Mr. Grannis wrote that,
this letter is in response to many citizens
questions concerning Mr. Powells zoning
issues. His information is totally false.
He states that in 1990 I was zoned for a
septic business only. This is not true. The
people who were on the board at the time,
on April 18, 1990, were Supervisor Ralph
Hauenstein, Clerk Margaret Hill, Treasur-
er Bill Smith and Zoning Administrator
Louise Culver. Perhaps someone should
ask them what their intent was when they
rezoned my property. (Unfortunately,
Margaret Hill is deceased.) I have always
done excavating work, hauled fll sand and
gravel as my father and grandfather had
done before me. Our supervisor is fully
aware that Powells Septic Service was sim-
ply the name of the company at the time
of the zoning. As to his statement regard-
ing my business on the south side of M-82,
my father and I have had equipment and
stockpiles on that side of the street prior to
1990. In fact, our supervisor has stated we
have been there for as long as he can re-
member. It seems odd that previous town-
ship supervisors did not have any issues
with my business for 30 years. If I were to
agree with their current demands it would
probably put me out of business.
Last year I was given permits from
the zoning administrator, Janice Holton
to erect a building for the storage of my
equipment. I then applied for a septic per-
mit from the county and a building permit
from Stanton, to build on the south side
of M-82. Not too long after that all of my
permits were revoked by the township. So
instead of putting local people to work in
the building trades I had to lay off some of
my workers. Since attorney fees have been
very high on both sides, I was curious as
to how much the township was spending
of the taxpayers dollars to fght me. Under
the Freedom of Information Act I asked
a very specifc question to the township
clerk, How much in attorney fees have
been spent to fght me? I received an an-
swer back, We checked with our attorney
and we dont have to tell you, it is attorney
client privilege. My question is, who is
the client, isnt it me as a taxpayer? Well
so much for transparent government. Per-
haps another taxpayer in the township
would want to ask the question; maybe
they could get a straight answer.
JOHn POwEll
Reynolds Township
Townships
department doesnt
make sense
TO THE EDITOR:
Reynolds Township has fnally allowed
me to live in our home but not until they
got their own way. You have to remember
that the township started its own Building,
Safety Department. Even though I origi-
nally purchased all the necessary permits
through Montcalm County Building and
Safety in Stanton. I was told that the town-
ship no longer recognized them. So I had
to re-purchase the same permits through
Reynolds Township.
I had Montcalm County Building and
Safety come out and they passed and is-
sued a Certifcate of Occupancy but this
was not good enough for the township I
had to have its certifcate. So I had their
inspector come out which I was told he
would not issue a permit until I enclosed
my deck because they wanted to call it a
porch. I asked why I could not receive
an occupancy permit because the house
passed, I was told the deck was attached
to the house and they wanted in enclosed.
Rather than fghting and going back to
court I allowed them to dictate so I en-
closed the deck and I received a certifcate
of occupancy through the township. In
my opinion I feel sorry for the next people
who want to build their own home and
have to put up with the township and their
interpretation of the building code, to me
there is an obvious difference between
Montcalm Countys Building and Safety
and Reynolds Township Building Safety
Department.

Remembering
TO THE EDITOR:
It was a remembering day to take part
in, the Harvest Festival parade. Under the
leadership of our Commander Dennis and
President Barb with marchers; Dennis,
Barb, Al, Dick and Jim, along with Bob, Bill,
Fay, Donna, Don, Peggy, Tony and Debbie
riding on the wagon being towed by Ray and
the wagon being donated by Patsy. The re-
spect and support from the community and
the remarks we heard as we marched was
so worth every step. One remark was from a
small boy to this father are they soldiers?
His father said yes and if it wasnt for these
men and women we wouldnt live in a free
country. America is still the Best. God Bless
all. Thank You.

Joint Pain and Food Sensitivities
This is the un-edited story of one womans journey with food allergies and arthritis. She wrote because she wants some help with
bone spurs.
Fifteen years ago, I had pain from neck to toe. Was diagnosed with osteoarthritis and told that I could feel encouraged because of
the great advancements in joint replacements. I told the rheumatologist that I was hopeful it wouldnt get to that, and she predicted
that I would be in a wheelchair in ten years if I wasnt willing to consider joint replacements.
I went on a 7-day Sonnes fast and cleanse and all pain disappeared. I added foods back very carefully and over time (and a couple
more fasts) discovered what gave me pain: wheat, dairy, carrots, lemons, soy, and safower oil. Since then I have controlled my diet
and have taken glucosamine sulfate, and chondroitin sulfate. No joint replacements yet.
I took up bike riding last year, work as a school counselor in a large two-story building and am up and down stairs all day with no
difculty. So, I think my food avoidance has worked well for me.
I did suffer a recurrence of symptoms some years back and after weeks of puzzlement, and distortions to my nger joints, I discovered
that stearic acid in tablets and capsules is a problem for me.
When the attack of thumb arthritis hit a few months ago, I had not changed anything, or so I thought for three weeks of pain. Finally,
in desperation, it occurred to me that one of my supplements could have changed. When I went through them, reading every label, I
discovered that the Carlson people had added safower oil to the vitamin D I had taken for years. I immediately stopped taking it and
the pain subsided within a day. Soon after, I ate one of Pamelas Ginger Cookies (Pamelas products had been a trusted friend for years)
and I experienced thumb pain. Read the label to nd safower oil. Same experience with Trader Joes Black Bean Enchiladas, Food for
Lifes China Black Rice Bread, and virtually all the baked goods from the gluten-free bakery I have frequented for six years. The way I see
it, I could tolerate small amounts of that wretched oil, but when I ingested a dose everyday, my immune system reacted.
However, right after discovering the oil in my Vit. D, I purchased a roasted chicken from my local market so
that I could have easy meals during a busy week at school. Thumb pain all week. Stopped eating the chicken
and pain subsided. I asked them if they used safower oil on their roasted chickens and they said no. I didnt
believe them. Last week, feeling a cold coming on, I put together a pot of chicken soup, using Pacics Organic
Chicken Broth and organic chicken thighs. Pain after one bowl. So, chicken is on my list of avoid foods.
The bone spurs are not pleasant, but are not horrible when I stay away from offending foods. Yesterday
my pain seemed to be from more than just the spurs. Was it the beef I ate for lunch? Was it the bike ride and
over use of that spur laden joint? My body seems to sing when I eat salmon, so Ill try to keep to that all week.
Love it but anything gets tiresome over time.
I share this to illustrate how the foods we eat can cause inammation in our genetically weakest system. Pay
attention. You may also be affected by the foods you eat. We will recommend Herbal Hydrangea one three
times per day and Homeopathic Calcerea Carbonicum 6C one pellet per day for the spurs in the hands and
thumbs. Stay tuned for the results.
Put Your Health in Your Own Hands. Bob Huttinga PA-C. 989-352-6500.

we can nd his old own-
er. ID# 11/09/26 added

I get the calls. Someone called them, or came to their door, or
they saw a newspaper article or ier which told them that they
absolutely need a Trust, warned them great perils lurk at the
probate court if they die without one, and wants them to come
to a More Information seminar, or, worse, will sell them a
package of legal documents for a mere $2,000-$3,000, legal
documents which they insist will certainly save them or their
kids thousands of dollars. So they call around, shopping for a
lower cost. Cant blame them at all. They ask What does a
trust typically cost?
Theres no typical Trust. There is no free lunch, no typi-
cal trust. So I ask them What kind of trust do you think you
need? They answer, Just a regular one. Well, then, the cost
depends, Theyre thinking Dang! Typical lawyer. Cant get
a straight answer out of any of them. But costs depend on
whats going on in your life, what the purpose is for the Trust,
who the beneciaries will be, what your health is, what the
Trust will own, what taxes we need to minimize and more.
Some education A trust is created when the Grantor the
person creating the Trust communicates orally or in writ-
ing to someone else, that they are creating a Trust. Then the
Grantor picks a Trustee who could be themself (Wow, what
a mind bender that is) and tells that Trustee what the stuff
is that needs entrusting to them, why, what to do with it, and
when to give the stuff back or give the stuff to somebody else.
It does not need to be in writing, but it should be in 99% of
the cases.
For example. If you give your daughter, Annie, your favorite
piece of jewelry and $10,000 and tell her to invest the $10,000
for Charlie, her 3 year old disabled sons, education, with in-
structions to give him the money when he starts college, and
to give the jewelry as a gift to his wife someday when he gets
married, and to pay herself $50 a year out of the interest she
makes from investing the $10,000 (for her trouble holding the
jewels and picking an investor), then:
You, the Grantor, created a Trust. Give it a name. Call it
Charlies Chunk of Change Trust.
Annie is the Trustee of Charlies Chunk of Change Trust.
(Since Annie is a good investor, Charlie will have a big
chunk when he goes to college)
Annie earns $50 per year income, which she has to re-
port to the IRS and on which she has to pay income tax.
Even though Annie has the jewels in her bedroom dress-
er drawer, the Trust (not her, you, nor Charlie, but the
oral, unwritten Trust) technically owns the money and
jewelry. Stuff the Trust owns money and jewels - is
called the Trusts principal.
The Trust can apply for and receive a unique Federal ID
number from the IRS as it is now a taxpayer.
The Trust will have to pay taxes on the income its invest-
ed principal ($10,000) earns. Hmmm. You should have
talked to an attorney before creating the Trust, about
how to minimize, avoid or postpone paying those taxes.
The beneciary of the Trust is Charlie. Too bad you
didnt think to tell Annie she could use the money in the
event a cure was found for Charlies disability and she
needed just $10,000 more to pay for it.
The Trust ends only when Charlie starts college and he
gets married.
If Charlie never goes to college or gets married? Hope-
fully you thought to tell Annie what to do if that hap-
pened.
If disabled Charlie is getting government Social Security
Disability income, then in the year he receives the mon-
ey, which could be worth 2-3 times the initial amount
Annie invested, it could disqualify him from receiving
part of his SSD benets that year unless Annie had
something from you in writing to prove she was not to
give or use that money for Charlies basic needs.
If Annie dies before Charlie goes to college? Hopefully
you told Annie who you want to replace her.
If Charlie dies before he goes to college? Hopefully you
told Annie, and whomever would replace her, what to do
with the principal (money and jewels) if that happens.
.and a hundred and three different questions, just for
this simple, unwritten, Charlies Chunk of Change Trust
you created.
Whats a typical Trust? No such animal. Does a trust benet
you? If you have stuff, lots of stuff, different stuff, or family
or tax problems youre trying to solve, well, then, maybe. But
almost certainly, just some expert advice (from an accountant,
investment advisor, lawyer, banker) will save you and your
beneciaries your own chunk of change. Get some.
