OF

EVENTS

Signs of Fall are here, both in America and Afghanistan. Its cooling down in both places. The 10th remembrance of 9/11 was celebrated throughout the world and is a fitting reminder of why we are here in Afghanistan. Football season is well underway. Nearly all of OEF 11.2 replacements have arrived and are turning over with their counterparts. Most Marines and Sailors serving 12 months with us have taken rest and recuperation leave and are on the downhill slope towards the remainder of the deployment. We have bid farewell and following seas to all redeploying personnel except those assigned to our services detachments (Food Service, Marine Corps Community Services, Postal, and Personnel Retrieval and Processing), who redeploy in a few weeks. For those redeploying, return and reunion is an especially emotional time for both the family Continued on Page 2 INSIDE THIS ISSUE 1 2 3 4 6

and the Marine or Sailor, and it requires patience and understanding on the part of everyone during this readjustment period. Best of luck to all facing this joyous time and challenge. During October, remember to celebrate the discovery of America on Columbus Day. We will also commemorate the tragic event that occurred in Beirut, Lebanon at the Beirut Memorial. Be sure to take advantage of fall festivals, hay rides, pumpkin farms, the Onslow County Fair, and be safe trick or treating on Halloween night. Be sure to take advantage of Marine Corps Family Team Buildings four Beyond the Brief workshops designed for participants to gain a deeper insight to those issues that most concern families before, during and after a deployment. All participants are guaranteed to meet other family members with whom they share things in common with AND learn something, whether this is the first or fifth deployment. Last but not least, as highlighted in green on the front page of this newsletter, on Thursday, 15 September, the FRO has scheduled a luncheon for spouses of deployed Marines and Sailors, and on Monday, September 19, another Jump-N-Jax potluck dinner, just for our families. As always, I encourage you to take advantage of at least one opportunity in this newsletter, whether it is family, financial or physical fitness. Semper Fi! John P. Flynn Major, USMC

This nation will remain the land of the free only so long as it is the home of the brave. ~Elmer Davis
Reflection on September 11
Chaplain Michael Tomlinson

I was commissioned a Lieutenant in the United States Navy in April of 2001. In June of that year I was at the chaplains school and graduated in August. On 9 SEP I was on a plane out of LaGuardia International Airport headed for La Maddalena, Sardinia the homeport of the USS EMORY S LAND (AS 39). As we were winging our way east I was afforded a beautiful view of the Twin Towers. At about that time the young lady sitting next to me asked, Do you think terrorists will ever attack America? Not being a prophet I answered, No! This is America. They will attack us around the world, but never here. (I said this despite predicting at chaplain school wed be fighting militant Islam within a year). Sadly, just two days later we were at war with militant/extremist Islam. On USN ships it is tradition that prior to 2200 the Chaplain will offer an evening prayer. On September 11, 2001 I was asked to give my first official prayer as a USN chaplain. Filled with the same spirit of righteous indignation that animated the hearts of all red blooded Americans I sought Gods justice for the perpetrators of this dastardly deed. Ten years later, I was asked to have the benediction for the 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony onboard Camp Leatherneck, Afghanistan. Below is my prayer that I think reflects the warrior ethos of the USMC and the men and women of the US military who have kept our country safe for 10 years and exacted justice on our nations enemies. Almighty God of justice, we thank you that our flag still flies, a sign we will not submit to the forces of evil, intolerance and repression. It still flies thanks to the spirit of sacrifice that animated British born Col. Rick Rescorla (US Army Retired), a Vietnam veteran who is credited with saving the lives of more than 2,700 people in the World Trade Center, but lost his trying to save more. Lord, in the wake of the cowardly attack on 9/11 President George W. Bush told the first responders at ground zero in NYC that he heard them, the world heard them and the people who knocked these buildings down will hear all of us soon! For the last 10 yrs. Americas enemies have been hearing from us as the US military has meted out justice to them. Illustrative of this is USN SEALS bringing Osama bin Laden to account for the blood on his hands. Lord for this retributive justice we give thanks. Ten years ago this day in my first command and first official prayer as a USN chaplain, paraphrasing Ps. 59, I asked and still petition, God, save us from our enemies. Protect us from those who come against us. Save us from those who do evil and from murderers . . . Cruel people attack us . . . We have done nothing wrong, but they were ready to attack us. . . You are the LORD God AllPowerful . . . Arise and punish those people . . . God we thank you that our flag flies high and ask you bless the USMC, our brave allies and God Bless America. In your holy and precious name we pray amen.

From the Family Readiness Officer (FRO)

Mr. Jos L. Padilla

October is already here with fall making its way in and the holidays approaching we are more than half way through our deployment. Your warriors have done nothing less than the best ensuring that the mission is accomplished. This past month has been one of the busiest months for the forward with our Marines and Sailors checking in and out. Welcome to the Marines and Sailors that just arrived; I know your knowledge and professionalism will surpass your predecessors. These new Warriors of the forward havent missed a beat and are moving on with great attitude and initiative. I would like to thank the Marines and Sailors that are returning to their loved ones for their professionalism, selfless service, and willingness to go the extra mile to support and accomplish the mission. Also, in the past month we had one Marine recognized for his hard work and accomplishments, Lance Corporal Louis Cisneros (PSD) was promoted to Corporal, Combat Meritorious. We also have a new addition to the 2d MLG family: Joseph Adam Schuckert, son of Staff Sergeant Frederick and Alisha Schuckert (LS Det.), born on 10 September. Congratulations to the family and we would like to welcome our new baby devil pup to the family. Last but not least I want to thank our family and friends for their constant support and dedication to make sure that these Marines and Sailors keep a high morale.

Semper Fi! Jerry E. Lopez 1stSgt Lopez, USMC

Greetings! September brought rain, school and those crazy weather swings that actually have some pretty nice days to enjoy. We have some inbound flights; which means some of your Marines and Sailors are coming home! Information flow with the small groups that have already returned and those that departed was exceptional. We expect it will continue as the groups get larger. Our delivery of homecoming information to each of you, hinges on your Marine/Sailors designation of you as a contact. We must have a valid email address and contact information for you. Rest assured that once I have both a flight timeline and a by-name roster with your Marine/Sailors name on itI will contact you with Homecoming information. It is very important that you remain patient and allow us the time to organize and prepare for these arrivals. In addition, be ready to react to notification by having a flexible travel plan that allows you to adjust to sudden changes. Please continue to Like our CLR-27 Facebook web page: CLR-27 Facebook Web Page We post to this page almost daily concerning general information, available resources, articles, links to flyers and other websites and anything else that may interest or assist our Marines, Sailors and their families.
