"Does Americanization Have Adverse Effects on Health?: Stress, Health Habits,
and Infant Health Outcomes among Puerto Ricans." Social Forces 78:613-642.

The researcher's first intended to explore the ramifications of, according to the article," the
migration and assimilation processes for the lifestyles and health habits of pregnant Puerto
Rican women (Landale, Oropesa, LLanes, Gorman, 1999)." Wherefore, they should further
examine the breadth to which," there are differences by generational status in Puerto Rican
women's exposure to stressful life events and their substance-use patterns during pregnancy
(Landale, et al., 1999)." Furthermore, the researchers," assessed the roles of lifestyle and
health habits in explaining generational differences in two key indicators of infant health-
low birth weight and infant mortality(Landale, et al., 1999)."

Latino mothers that were Puerto Rican born immigrants and contrasted with U.S. born
Puerto Rican, as well as, their progeny (alive and deceased). The women were chosen,"
from a representative sample of Puerto Rican mothers from the six U.S. states with the
greatest number of births to Puerto Rican women (Landale, et al., 1999)." The sample had
been drawn from birth and death records.

The researcher's did a cross-sectional study. 2,631 mothers of infants were interviewed from the
1994 and 1995 birth and infant death records if six U.S. states and the Commonwealth of Puerto
Rico. Interviewers were bilingual, as well, as questionares being in both Spanish and English.
There was, however, too few cases of infant death to include infant mortality to be included in the
study. In the case that a child was born outside of the U.S. the representatives were disincluded.
After all the limitations, the analytic sample consisted of 1,146," mainland Puerto Rican mothers
of infants born in 1994 and 1995(Landale, et al., 1999)."

article?

3.What are the characteristics of the population studied? How many people, ages,
genders, race/ethnicity/nationality, professions, etc.? How were these people
selected?
6.Critique this article, discuss method, findings, analysis, writing style, or other

4.What research method(s) was employed by the researchers? Was this appropriate for the
population and the research question? Were there limitations to this method?
This article was very well developed. There was excellent amount of
background information, and the description of methods as well as
variables was thorough. My one criticism is that with surveys and
interviews a researchers information could be biased since subjects such
as drinking, smoking, using drugs during a pregnancy are taboo.
