Goodwin-White, Jamie. 2008. "Placing Progress: Contextual Inequality and
Immigrant Incorporation in the United States." Economic Geography 84:303-
332.

The primary goal of this article is to introduce," relational understandings of how

immigrants and the children of immigrants fare economically relative to the U.S. born in the
immigrant metropolises of New York and Los Angeles (Goodwin-White, 2008)."

The researcher extracted from the 1990 and 2000 5-percent PUMS," samples of 25-54 year
old men who were not self employed or living in group quarters and for whom data on
wages abd hours if work were available (Goodwin-White, 2008)." It was decidedly men due
to the different employment situations of immigrant versus native women, and the
incomparability of men's wages versus wome's wages. Forein-born and 1.5-generation
Hispanics and Asians along with U.S.-born whites, blacks, Hispanics, and Asians. The
researcher felt that these covered the major racial groups in the united states. The rest were
too difficult to incorporate and were in smaller numbers in the areas of analysis.

Hourly wages were estimated from the PUMS by," dividing the previous years wage and salary
income by hours worked(Goodwin-White, 2008)." Also, when there was a direct comparison of
wages, the wages in 2000 were adjusted by a,"Consumer Price Index deflator of .792 for
population-weighted samples of 1,000 persons from each group in 1990 and in 2000 (Goodwin-
White, 2008)." All group's hourly wages were logged as well as represented proportionally to
U.S.-born whites.

4.What research method(s) was employed by the researchers? Was this appropriate for the
population and the research question? Were there limitations to this method?
This article was well detailed. There were several variables, and because
of that it felt like the auther was excluding things. In example, there was
a great deal of statistical information about Los Angeles, but not that
much insight into the significant racial inequality in New York. I found the
description of the methods to be a little unclear and confusing. Although,
the auther did justify all the reasons she chose them.
