Acceleration due to
gravity

What is free fall
• Motion under the influence of gravity per
se.

What is free fall
• Why do objects fall to
the ground when
released?

Answer: Due to gravity

Acceleration due to gravity
Slope = g = 9.8 m/s2.

• Hence=
gravity = 9.8 m/s2
since its direction is
towards the center of
the earth g= -9.8m/s2.

What is free fall?
• When you drop objects
of different sizes and
weights, do they reach
the ground at the same
time?

Theory of Motion According To
Galileo
• According to Galileo, all
falling objects accelerate at
the same rate. At a given
location on the earth and in
the absence of air
resistance, all objects fall
with the same uniform
acceleration. Thus, two
objects of different mass,
dropped from the same
height, will hit the ground at
the same time.

for a Falling Object
The speed of the ball is
increasing by the same amount;
5 m/s .

velocity changes each
second is the same.

Formulas for Free fall
• vf= vi + gt
• d= vit + ½ gt2
• vf2= vi2 + 2gd

Sample Problem
1. A bowling ball falls freely (near the
surface of the Earth) from rest. How far
does it fall in 4 seconds, and how fast
will it be going at that time?

Prepared by: JG Chavez for MCS

• v = vi + gt
= 0 + (-9.8 m/s2)(4s)
= - 39.2 m/s because it is downward
d = vit + ½ gt2
= 0 + ½ -9.8 m/s2 (4s)2
= - 78.4 m because it is downward
