Local wedding
Christina Higgins, of Little Neston, and Liam Fenney of Neston were married at St Winefrides Church, Little Neston, in August, with the wedding reception held at Chester Zoo followed by their honey spent in Mexico. Christinas father Peter served with Cheshire Fire & Rescue Service for 25 years before retiring in 2001 and Liams Dad Kevin is a Station Manager in Cheshire Fire & Rescue Service. The two dadsworked at the same fire Station in Ellesmere Port during the 1980s, not knowing their children would meet and then marry. So they thought a vintage fire engine would be a bit special to transport the bride and father to the Church and then Liam and Christina to the reception at Chester Zoo. Pictured, from left are Kevin and Vanessa Fenney, Liam and Christina Fenney, nephew Declan Fenney and Peter and Val Higgins. Gypsy site objections NESTON Town Council is voicing its objections to proposals for a permanent gypsy and traveller site in the town. Cheshire West and Chester Council has earmarked a number of sites across the county which should be set aside for the travelling community. One of these is the Buildwas Road area, on the Clayhill Industrial Estate. The Mayor of Neston, Cllr Martin Barker, said: Neston Town Council has previously informed CW&C that the view of the Planning & Environment Committee is that there are no suitable locations in the Neston area for gypsy and traveller sites. The issue will be discussed by town councillors at their meeting on 4th October.
WORK has been carried out to dredge the main gutters on the Parkgate marshes in an effort to cut the mosquito menace. This has resulted in the creation of the two new ponds. A public consultation will take place regarding plans for viewing platforms on Saturday 29th October at St Thomass Church between 10am and 4pm.

Laras a star
AT just seven years old, Nestons Lara Wedd is already winning tennis tournaments across the North West. Playing mini red tennis, in the last few weeks she has been semi-finalist in the Lancashire Junior Open, winner of the Vale of Clwyd Junior Open, winner of the Widnes Junior Open finally culminating in becoming winner of the Cheshire County Championships. She is now the number one mini red tennis player in the County and at her club, The Tennis Section, at Neston Cricket Club. Mum Paula says its all down to Laras hard work and determination to succeed, training several nights a week as well as playing in regular tournaments and working on her fitness and agility. Starting playing at just four years old, Lara loves tennis and her enjoyment of the sport is clear to see.
Saturday 29th October at St Thomass Church, Mostyn Square, Parkgate, between 10am and 4pm.
Comment forms will be available at the event. All comments will be considered by the partnership bodies. Neston Town Councillors, together with staff from Cheshire West and Chester Council, RSPB and specialist contractors will be available at the consultation to help explain the proposals and to answer any questions.

Local Consultation - Parkgate Marshes Neston Town Council in partnership with the RSPB and in association with Cheshire West and Chester Council and Natural England are considering submitting plans for approval to erect two decked viewing platforms which would extend out from the Parkgate sea wall. These would provide a walked access to view the wildlife on the existing pond by the Boathouse and the newly created pond situated off the Donkey Stand.

Anthony explained: This was the site of the regions Industrial Revolution. The first steam engine anywhere in Wirral and west Cheshire was sited here during the early years of industrialisation and later the great engineer, George Stephenson, visited the site. The mine was also extraordinary for being one of the very few in the country to use underground canals to move the coal. The first colliery, Ness Colliery, owned by the Stanley family of Hooton, opened in 1759, another mine operated in adjacent Little Neston, owned by the Cottingham family, 1819 to 1849. Both mines had closed by 1855, when silting of the Dee Estuary had made it difficult to move coal in bulk. Operations restarted as Neston Colliery in 1874, using a newly built railway. The business went through several hands before closing permanently in 1927. At its peak, in 1921, the final business Wirral Colliery employed about 350 people. ThE Friends of Park Fields held a Bat detection evening recently on the Cowfield and Park fields at Parkgate. Around 20 Local residents, young and old, gathered at St Thomas Church, in Parkgate, where they were told about the many varieties of bats in the UK and their various habitats. Lawrence Armstrong, a Bat expert from the Merseyside and West Lancashire bat group gave us a fascinating insight into the life of bats, who are warm blooded creatures that usually have just one pup a year, have wings supported by a bone structure like our hands and fingers, and are covered in fur. In summer they can eat 3000 insects in one night, and in winter they hibernate in crevices of buildings, caves and trees. They learned much more about the bats, and then after partaking in some light refreshment, the group moved to the field with their Bat detecting equipment to search for bats. They were not disappointed and Common Pipistrelle (Pipistrellus pipistrellus) small, fluttery
and low flying - and Noctule (Nyctalus noctula) larger, faster and higher flying - bats were seen in abundance. Others species were present, but could not be identified with certainty beyond being members of the Myotis group of bats, which includes the Daubentons (Myotis daubentonii), Natterer (Myotis nattereri), Whiskered (Myotis mystacinus) and Brandts (Myotis brandtii) bats. Natterers bats have been identified over the field on previous evenings. The Friends will also be resuming their Volunteer work days shortly. After working on gapping and restoring the hedge line at the top of the Cowfield, we intend to plant a length of new hedge towards the bottom of the field, and will need help with the planting. Dates for future Volunteer Days will be displayed on the Notice Boards, so if you would like to get involved please contact Chris Try, on 335 7472 or just turn up on the day.

NESTON & District Christian Aid Committee have sent over 10,500 to Christian Aid, London, this year, and Gift Aid will add over 1,000 to that. The money was raised from the sponsored walk, and from the house-tohouse collections during Christian Aid Week. Local churches also sent over 1,200 for the East Africa Appeal. In addition many churches and individual people responded to the Disasters Emergency Committee appeal in other ways. Treasurer Eileen Ward said We are delighted that people from Neston and District are so generous, realising that whatever problems we have, other people are far worse off than we are. All this money goes not only to help people in an emergency, but also to improve their lives in the future. Some of the walkers on the 2011 Neston & District Christian Aid sponsored walk at the halfway refreshment stop in Gayton.

BOOK REVIEWS:
General Fiction: Pigeon English by Stephen Kelman Recently emigrated from Ghana to one of Londons enormous housing projects, young Harrison Opuku finds wonder in his new and ever-expanding world. Then one of his classmates, a boy known for his crazy basketball skills, seemed to have been murdered for his dinner. Armed with a pair of camouflage binoculars and detective techniques absorbed from television shows like CSI, Harri and his best friend, Dean, plot to bring the perpetrator to justice. Told in Harris infectious voice and multicultural slang, Pigeon English follows in the tradition of our great novels of friendship and adventure. Based on the Damilola Taylor murder case, this wonderful funny, sad, deep book by a brand new author has already been shortlisted for this years Booker Prize. I found it completely gripping from the first page to the jaw-dropping final sentence- which probably means it wont win! But I defy anyone not to love it. Biography: Back from the Brink: 1,000 Days at Number 11 by Alistair Darling In the summer of late 2007, shares of Northern Rock went into free-fall causing a run on the bank - the first since the Great Depression. Northern Rock was only the first: in the ensuing months, Alistair Darling stood firm in the eye of this perfect storm all over the world financial institutions thought too big to fail were falling prey to the lethal toxicity of the US sub-prime mortgage market. Back from the Brink tells the gripping story of one thousand days of crisis. The book describes how, as chancellor, he attended all night meetings at the White House, interspersed with confrontations with the titans of international banking; as readers, we find ourselves in the rooms where the destinies of millions weighed heavily on the shoulders of a few. Back from the Brink is a gripping and immediate account of an unprecedented global financial catastrophe. Alistair Darlings knowledge and understanding make this not only a unique perspective on the events that rocked global capitalism, but a vital and fascinating historical document. Cookery: Ramsays Best Menus Gordon Ramsays last TV series, The F Word, culminated in a competition to find the nations favourite local restaurant. His new series, Ramsays Best Restaurants, continues this theme, focusing on the countrys favourite international cuisines: Italian, French, Spanish, Mediterranean, British, Chinese, Indian, Moroccan, Mexican and Middle Eastern etc etc. To complement the series Gordon has here selected not just his favourite menus from these cuisines, but also the perfect Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter menus. His 52 chosen menus, comprising 156 recipes for starters, main courses and desserts, are displayed in such a way, on sliced pages, that the reader can mix and match to create their own favourite menu for any occasion and any time of year. The result is an incredible 140,000 different menu choices in stunning colour photography. Mouthwatering!
