XPUFB Universal fixing bracket A. The Unistrut rail is fixed to a flat surface and the trunking clamped as shown in Fig.3 or Fig 4. Care should be taken that the brackets allow for the trunking to align correctly (See above). B. When used in a lateral run the bracket is used in conjunction with drop-rods bolted directly to the back of the Unistrut rail. This forms a trapeze for the trunking to sit in see Fig.5 In all cases the maximum spacing between the supports shall be not be more 2 metres, with support within 0.5 m of any joint in each direction. Arrangements for support of particular components are shown in Fig. 6.

Adjustment where the rear bracket is not accessible for adjustment See Method of assembly above. Support springs that are inaccessible for adjustment after installation may be adjusted for dimension X using nut A before the bracket is fitted to the trunking. The dimension X should be maintained by the adjustment of nut B if necessary. The remainder of the assembly is carried out in accordance with the above instructions.
Selection of XRFB The support height is ideally worked out from the joint below the slab to the joint nearest the slab above, rounded off to the nearest 0.5 mm (see sketch for example), however it is more usual to take the total floor height and multiply by the weight per metre. The required XRFB is selected from the tables 1a to 11b.

MEMPOWER BUSBAR TRUNKING BUSDUCT / BUSWAY XP High Power range INSTALLATION [contd] Application Notes
Earthing arrangements at feed end a) case as PE and b) external earth conductor Case as PE Internal connection (See Drg.XP1) Flanges are provided with an earthing connector with a bolt through the flange plate for connection of a PE conductor internally. A single bolt is used up to 2500A and two bolts from 3200A to 6300A. The earthing connector may be moved to the other side of the flange if necessary. This arrangement has been short-circuit tested for a phase-to-earth fault of 48kA for 1 second, equivalent to a symmetrical 3-phase fault of 80kA for 1 second. Case as PE External connection. As an alternative to the above an incoming PE conductor of a suitable size must be connected to the trunking profile as shown in 2. below. This arrangement will provide a phase-to-earth fault rating of 48kA for 1 second, equivalent to a symmetrical 3phase fault of 80kA for 1 second. External (copper) earth conductor. See 1 below for factory fitted arrangement. Connection of a suitably sized incoming PE conductor to this conductor will provide a phase-to-earth fault rating of 48kA for 1 second, equivalent to a symmetrical 3-phase fault of 80kA for 1 second.
Separate external PE conductor Supplied to order Section through trunking shows external copper earth bar running laterally - bolted to brackets on trunking profile 1.
2. Connecting external conductor when using case as PE An earthing conductor of the appropriate size must be connected to the trunking profile in the area indicated. Care must be taken not to damage the sections retaining the conductors
Conductors
Separation distance between adjacent runs Trunking runs side by side the recommended minimum distance is 325mm centres. Space is needed for the removal of a length of trunking from a completed run as shown by area F in Fig. 13. In the case of ratings up to 2500A either shaded area D or E is required for removal of the joint bolt, depending on the bolt direction.

MEMPOWER BUSBAR TRUNKING BUSDUCT / BUSWAY XP High Power range Fire stops
Recommendations for the construction of fire-stops where trunking penetrates walls and floors classified as fire barriers. Note: Mempower, as the trunking manufacturer, does not take the responsibility for the specification, rating or construction of the fire-stop. Internally XP trunking does not require any fire-stop measures, as there is no air space to allow the passage of hot gases. Typical arrangement of the external fire-stop A semi-rigid mineral-fibre board [e.g. Hilti CP670] with an intumescent coating is used to fill the aperture around the trunking. The board is cut to closely follow the profile of the trunking and the edges of the aperture. The board is layered to fill the space completely, with intumescent filler [e.g. Hilti CP606] between layers. According to the type of material and the fire rating required each board will be up to 60mm thick. A total thickness of 150mm has been shown to provide a 4hour rating. The edges of the boards and all joints will be sealed with the intumescent filler, which will also be overlapped on surrounding surfaces by approximately 50mm. Careful consideration needs to be given to the access required to complete the fire-stop. It may be necessary to install sections of fire-stop at the stage of installation of the trunking if access afterwards is impossible e.g. trunking runs in close proximity to each other. In the application of the above a layer of impermeable foil should be wrapped around the trunking in the area of the fire-stop, following the profile, to prevent the possibility of chemical attack from any of the materials applied.

Voltage drop Examples: Case 1. . 1000A XP trunking run total length 50 metres. 20 tap-off units evenly distributed along the the run. Tap-off ratings the same and similarly loaded, drawing a total load of 870A at 0.9 power-factor. Volt-drop at the far end of the run = 0.0105 x 870 x 50/100 x 0.55 = 2.51 volts ph to ph. Case 2. .
Supply
1000A XP trunking run total length 50 metres. 7 tap-off units evenly distributed over the last 10 metres. Tap-off ratings the same and similarly loaded, drawing a total load of 870A at 0.9 power-factor. Volt-drop at the far end of the run = (0.0105 x 870 x 40/100) + (0.0105 x 870 x 10/100 x 0.55) = 4.16 volts ph to ph. Note that the volt-drop figure for the trunking has to be added to the volt-drop of the circuit from the supply source to the trunking feeder, to obtain the overall volt-drop according to the Wiring Regulations.

Neutral current The neutral conductor within the busbar trunking is of the same capacity as the phase conductors (100% neutral). Particular care needs to be taken to ensure that the neutral current is not excessive. Conditions under which this can arise include the following: Unbalanced load the connections to single-phase tap-off units on a 3-phase system must be alternated across the phases along the run to balance the load. Harmonic currents Electronic equipment and luminaires with electronic control gear generate harmonics in the supply current. Certain harmonic currents accumulate in the neutral of the supply, even when the load is balanced across the phases. Usually this is not a problem with a 100% neutral but in the case of total loads near to the full rating of the trunking this should be checked. Either consult the manufacturer of the equipment and, if necessary, size the trunking according to the neutral current or split the load over two or more circuits. See also Technical Note Harmonic currents in the neutral.

Integrity in fire conditions A. Building Penetration. The busbar trunking standard BSEN60439-2 calls for the testing of fire-barrier elements inside trunking, to international standard ISO834. This test is to verify the barrier properties where trunking passes through a fire-rated wall or floor. Mempower XP has no need of internal firebarriers (not necessary with the compact construction) as proven by test. Measures required external to the trunking are described under Installation Fire stops. B. Integrity of the circuit under fire conditions There is no test specified for busbar trunking at present, either in BS or IEC standards. However, BS6387 details tests for the integrity of CABLES under fire conditions. It allocates a code for the performance according to the test severity. For example: o CWZ = Circuit maintained for 3 hours in 950 C flame; circuit maintained under specified fire conditions with water; circuit maintained under specified fire conditions with mechanical shock. Although the tests are not strictly applicable to busbar trunking, tests have been made on XP trunking to indicate a measure of integrity. The code is not quoted since it only applies to cables but the equivalent would be BSW. The tests conducted were as follows: Circuit maintained for 3 hours in 750 oC flame; circuit maintained for 20 minutes in 950 oC flame; circuit maintained under specified fire conditions with water.

Technical Note Harmonic currents in the neutral Rating factors for harmonic currents accumulating in the neutral. The system electrical designer should take into account the load characteristics in determining the RMS value of the neutral current in each part of the circuit. Research has shown that a concentrated load consisting of computer supply systems results in up to 161% of rated current flowing in the neutral. The standard full-load current rating of busbar trunking to BSEN60439-2 is based on a balanced 3-phase load without current in the neutral. Hence any significant amount of current in the neutral, due to harmonics, will require a reduction in the phase current to avoid excessive temperature rise in effect a de-rating factor. In the absence of actual data on the value of the neutral current, but assuming the load to consist solely of computer supplies, then typical factors would be: a) Half-size neutral - rate the trunking at 57% of normal full-load current. b) Full size neutral rate the trunking at 70% of normal full-load current c) Double neutral - rate the trunking at 81% of normal full-load current These are worst-case conditions the load will usually be mixed, some circuits having harmonics and others without harmonics. Note: In most cases a diversity factor already applies and the maximum load at any one time is typically less than 75%, requiring no further de-rating with a double neutral. See also Size of the neutral in tap-off units
Technical Note thermal expansion along the run Linear expansion (or contraction) of a busbar trunking run needs to be considered in terms of the heating and cooling due to electrical loading and changes in ambient temperature. In the case of XP trunking the design of the joint allows for up to 5mm of lateral expansion in both the conductors and the casing and this is accumulated along the run, with a joint at every 3 metres minimum (i.e. on a 60m run the total allowance is at least 100mm). Thus there is no need for a separate expansion element with this range. The movement is permitted in the joint by clamping the overlapping ends of the bars or the clamping plates on each trunking unit with a through-bolt positioned in slots or gaps in the bars, applying high axial pressure via special conical washers to maintain the required pressure irrespective of the lateral movement of the bars due to thermal expansion. The design of the joint allows for lateral expansion in both the conductors and the casing. The UFB clamps to the lateral faces of the extruded aluminium case which allows lateral movement under the forces of thermal expansion and contraction. Note: It is necessary to consider separately a case of building movement, for example when a trunking run bridges two buildings on different foundations. This is achieved by fitting a special unit into the run to provide exceptional movement. Back to main index Back to XP index

Idc = irms ac thermally, therefore the rated current on DC is identical to the AC rated current. The short-time rating heating effect Idc 2 t = irms 2 t therefore the rated short-time withstand current on DC is identical to Icw on AC. There is no asymmetry to a DC short-circuit current and no oscillation due to frequency, hence using the AC ratings for short-circuit performance is conservative. The short-circuit levels in service on DC are usually not high due to the inherent high impedance of the source (generators or UPS link). Trunking may be rated at DC voltage = AC voltage x 1.414. Voltage drop is calculated from Vd = Idc x (2 x R20). Low-voltage, high current DC (battery circuits) needs special consideration of volt-drop and may necessitate over-sizing of the current rating. Switching devices (e.g. in feeders) need to be DC rated. Back to main index Back to XP index

Technical note - Size of the neutral in tap-off units for circuits supplying equipment producing significant harmonics in the supply.
Research on the characteristics of circuits supplying computers has shown the RMS current in the neutral of a 4-wire supply to consist of largely 3rd and 9th harmonics amounting to a maximum of 161% of the line current. Circuit-protective devices and their enclosures, including tap-off units, are rated for a balanced 3phase load with zero neutral current. Introduction of neutral current requires consideration of the thermal effects on performance. The size of the neutral circuit within the tap-off is designed to take account of the above conditions, making the following assumptions: a) RMS harmonic resultant (Current THD) = 161% In as above. b) Load factor 75% In. Thus the neutral size must be: 0.75 x 1.61 x In = 1.21 x In minimum This is often exceeded for reasons of design convenience, but for tap-off units 120% rated neutral should be adequate in practice. The available neutral ratings for XP tap-offs are as follows: Rating (In) [A] 63 100 160 200 250 315 400 Standard neutral size [A] % In 63 100 100 100 160 100 200 100 250 100 315 100 400 100 Maximum neutral size [A] % In 126 200 200 200 320 200 400 200 500 200 630 200 630 157
In the case where circuit calculations show that neutral capacity needs to exceed that shown in the right-hand column of the table above, a larger tap-off unit should be selected. Similarly where the neutral is switched in the tap-off unit it will usually be necessary to select a larger switching device to provide an increased neutral rating.
