Volume-Based Cloning

Disk-Based Cloning

Becausethetargetandthesourcevirtualmachinesorsystemimageshavethesameidentities(name,SID,and soon),runningbothonthesamenetworkcanresultinconflicts.Toredeploythesourcevirtualmachineor systemimage,ensurethatyoudonotrunboththesourceandtargetimagesorvirtualmachinesonthesame networkatthesametime. Forexample,ifyouuseVMwareConvertertotesttheviabilityofrunningaVirtual PCvirtualmachineasa VMwarevirtualmachinewithoutfirstdecommissioningtheoriginalVirtual PCmachine,youmustresolve theduplicateIDproblemfirst.Youcanresolvethisproblembyusingtheoptionalcustomizationstepin VMwareConverterManager.

Adding a License
IfyouhavenotidentifiedalicensefilefortheEnterpriseeditionwhenyouinstalledVMwareConverter,you candosolaterintheapplicationitself. To add an Enterprise license 1 2 3 4 LaunchtheVMwareConverterManagerapplicationbydoubleclickingontheConvertericon. ChooseAdministration>LicensingInformationinthemainmenu. Dependingonthetypeofsourceanddestination,youmighthavetwochoicesforthewayinwhichthe importercreatestheclone: CreateafullcloneCreatesaVMwarevirtualmachinewithnodependenciesontheoriginalvirtual machineorsystemimage.Toallocateallthediskspaceforthisclone,selecttheAllocatealldisk spacenowforbetterperformanceradiobutton.Ifyouselecttheotherradiobutton,thevirtualdisks filesstartsmallandgrowasneeded,untiltheyreachthesizeofthesourcedisksfromwhichthey werecloned. TosupportvirtualdisksonFATfilesystems,selecttheSplitdiskinto2GBfilescheckbox. NOTE TheAllocatealldiskspacenowforbetterperformanceoptioncreatesadiskfilethatcan belargerthantheusedspaceofthesource.Forexample,thesourcediskmightbea16GB diskofwhichonly2GBisusedforthefile,butimportingthefilewiththeAllocateoption createsa16GBdisk.Takethisintoaccountwhenyoulookatfreespacebeforeyouimport.
CreatealinkedcloneCreatesaVMwarevirtualmachinethatsharesthevirtualdiskofthesource virtualmachineorsystemimage. LinkedclonesareusefulforproofofconceptonanonVMwareimagesuchas.sv2iand.vmc. Starting a Task from the Task View (Forcing a Queued Task to Run)
