1. INTRODUCTION: The aviation industry in India is one of those sectors that saw a constant pace of growth among the other industries in the world over the past many years. The open sky policy of the government has helped a lot of overseas players entering the aviation market in India. From then, it has only been growing in terms of players and the number of aircrafts. At present, private airlines account for around 75% portion of the domestic aviation market. The 9th largest aviation market in the world is India. Taking the help of the statistics from the Ministry of Civil Aviation, approximately 29.8 million passengers traveled to/from India in 2008, showing a surge of 30% from 2007. The prediction stated that international passengers will touch 50 million by 2015. More opportunities in the aviation industry in India are likely to make way for about 69 foreign airlines from 49 countries. The reservation system of various airlines was made online few years ago. Moreover with the advent of technology and with everything going the internet way we saw the emergence of much online reservation system collaborating the details and the booking of most of the players. The two most dominant names in the market is of makemytrip.com and cleartrip.com with makemytrip.com as the market leader as of now. Following the trend we saw many other open similar sites like yatra.com and ezeego.com, etc. 2. MANUAL SYSTEM Before the advent of computers in passenger reservations in Indian Aviation, Reservation of tickets was done in a difficult and inefficient manner. Tickets had to be booked by manually going to the reservation counters and then asking for paying for tickets at the reservation counter, the person at the reservation counter would then give a ticket you ask for if he had any ticket left. Manual systems required centralized reservation centers, groups of people in a room with the physical cards that represented inventory, in this case, seats on airplanes . These tickets were rectangular in shape and made of hard cardboard they varied in appearance from

region to region. The ticket mentioned all the information required like endpoints of travel, date, distance and fare. The problems associated with the manual reservation system were: 1. Labor intensive process of reservation, passengers had to stand in lines 2. Inefficient system of reservation as tickets were divided amongst stations 3. Lack of transparency led to black marketing of flight tickets and passengers never got to know how many tickets are left to be booked thus the person at the reservation counter 3. IMPLEMENTATION OF PASSENGER RESERVATION SYSTEM The pilot project of P.R.S. was started on 15.11.1985, over Northern Railway with IMPRESS (Integrated Multiple Train Passenger Reservation System), an online transaction processing system developed by CMC Ltd at New Delhi. This was later replicated at Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, and Secunderabad as well. A new and improved system called CONCERT (Country Wide Network for Computerized Enhanced Reservation and Ticketing) was later developed by CRIS. DETIALS OF CONCERT: 1. PROGRAMMING LANGUAGE: C and FORTRAN 2. RESERVATION CAPABILITY: Reservation of tickets from anywhere to anywhere, in any class at any date could be done using this system 3. MAIN MODULES: Flight operator module Reservation Module Cancellation and Modification Module Charting Module Accounting Module Database Module

4. IMPLEMENTATION OF INTERNET RESERVATION SYSTEM The online ticket reservation system was developed and in the E-Ticket facility the ticket is booked online and a printout can be taken and it can be used with a identification proof of the person whose name is mentioned on the ticket. This system simply acts as an interface between the Client on the internet and the PRS of cleartrip.com the function that this system provides is Security and Management System like account creation and ticket order placing and ticket cancellation process. HARDWARE DETAILS OF THE SYSTEM: 1. WEB SERVER: 2 x 2 CPU Proliant DL 360 2. APPLICATION SERVER: 2 x 4 CPU Proliant DL 580 3. DATABASE SERVERS: 2 x 2 CPU Proliant ML 570 4. FIREWALL SERVER: 2 x 2 CPU Proliant DL 360 5. POWER BACKUP: 2 x 6 KVA Libert UPSs with 16 nos 26 AH external batteries 6. BANDWIDTH TO EXISTING PRS: 2 MBPS over dedicated fiber 7. BANDWIDTH TO THE INTERNET: 5.5 MBPS leased to Satyam ARCHITECTURE OF ONLINE RESERVATION SYSTEM: 5. I-P-O CYCLES
