I will elicit as much information as possible before moving on. I will then use Semantic Impressions to allow the children to predict what the story might be about. This involves: Displaying the title of the story Using seven key words that relate to significant information from the text being studied Displaying the words in the order in which they appear in the text. The words reflect the story elements of characters, setting, problem and events Encouraging the children to work in teams to predict a storyline Briefly discussing the predictions I will then ask the children to take their Hello Universe books out and open page 25. We will begin the reading by shared reading whereby I will ask a child to read the story aloud for us and everyone else must listen and follow carefully as it is being read. We will continue this for half the story after such time I will ask the children some questions (higher and lower order directed at different children) to keep them focused. Who are the characters in the story? What did Tom mean by This was a real expedition? What use did Tom make of his slipper? How could Tom tell the time in the darkness? Why do you think Tom feel indignant when he discovered the garden?

What do you think is going to happen next? Following this the children will engage in P.A.L.S. to finish the story. I will at this stage, if I judge necessary, invite weaker children up to my desk to read the story with me and give these extra help. Early finishers will at this stage be asked to write down the who, where and why of the story. Step 2: Encouraging Reflection & Response: Effective questioning will take place at this stage involving a variety of different questions of lower and higher order to summarise the extract. What did Tom discover at the other side of the door? Describe the garden? What distracted Tom from reaching the clock to read the time? Who is Mrs Bartholomew? Why do you think this? A maid trotted out. What do you think happened next? Children will be asked to predict what may happen next in the story. I will then explain to the children that we are now going to make a useful word chart to help us expand our vocabulary for writing. In the story there was the word anxious so today we are going to make a list of useful words ending with -ious and this will later be written out and placed on the wall. I will elicit as many words as possible in the time that we have. This chart will be displayed for future reference.

Step 3:Vocabulary Development & Word Identification:

Conclusion: Summarizing the Extract:

There will then be two different types of worksheet that will be explained in class and will be completed for homework. Worksheet 1, again if necessary, is called Youre the Reporter and is for the weaker children. In this worksheet the children are supplied with a template of the who, what, where, when etc. of the story and must fill it in. Worksheet 2 is called Sum it Up. In this worksheet the children are asked to write a summary paragraph using the main idea words of the extract that they can come up with. It is for a classified newspaper and every word costs 20c. You have only 2.00 to spend so only essential words and a brief summary are necessary. Homework time at the end of the day may also be used to mark this homework.
