Before any humans walked the earth, when the world was the land of the animals, a very long winter set in. The sun did not come out for three years. The air was always dark. Thick clouds hung low and covered the sky. It snowed all the time. The animals suffered during this long winter. The lack of food was alarming enough, but the lack of heat made it all absolutely unbearable. They were frightened. The animals called for a grand council. All the beasts, birds, and fishes of all sizes and shapes were invited. All the animals quickly agreed that the most important thing to do was to find out what had become of the heat, for without heat their suffering would never end. Yes, the heat must be found! And it must be brought back again. They decided several quick and brave animals would go on a search mission to the upper world. That's where they suspected the heat had been taken. These are the animals chosen for the mission: Lynx, Fox, Wolf, Wolverine, Mouse, Pike (a freshwater fish), and Dogfish (a kind of small shark--dogfish is a funny name for a shark, isn't it?).

When I woke up the day of the trip, I was so excited! I knew the day was going to be excellent. "I can't wait to get to school," I thought. (That was the first and only time I was ever going to think or say that.) When the bell rang to go to our first period class, I got so excited! My teacher talked to us about the trip and how we should act. Then we went downstairs to get on to the buses. Finally, we were on our way! It took awhile, but we finally arrived. As I stepped off the bus, I almost froze! It was so cold. When Sarah, her dad, and I went to go looking at some animals, they weren't out because it was so cold. After it got a little warmer, we started to see some more animals. (I never knew how big the Bronx Zoo was!) We saw so many animals. My favorite animal was a certain kind of monkey called a pigmy marmoset. It was the smallest, most adorable, and precious thing ever. There was also a little mouse that had huge feet and hopped around like a kangaroo. I also saw Kodiak and polar bears. You could see the polar bears much better since they were closer to us. They were so gigantic. (I would hate to get into a fight with them!) After that, we saw two animals that are very rare. The first were the snow leopards, which were sleeping. The other was a red faced panda. As we left the park, the joy that had once come to me in the beginning of the trip was starting to fade away. The ride home was not good because it was a really long way home and so boring. We were even late because we hit traffic. Finally, we were back at school. As I gathered all my things I thought about the great day that I had on my first 4th grade

field trip. As I descended the steps of the bus, I was very depressed that the day was over. I hope to go back someday. "Wow look at that one," I said as my best friend Sarah and I jumped on the trampoline one hot summer night. It was after dark, and we were looking at the stars. I thought I was living a normal life, and I was until a couple nights later when we were on the trampoline again. We looked up and saw a strange purplish light right above us. "Are there any satellites that color?" I asked as I started to get off the side of the trampoline. Sarah shook her head slowly. I stared straight at the light. Then it got bigger. It seemed to come closer. Sarah leaped off the trampoline, and we sprinted towards the house. We stopped when we were half way there because the light got bigger and bigger and slowly it turned into an aircraft. It came closer and closer and slowly landed in her yard. Sarah, being the brave, one walked up to it. I stayed behind because I was scared. It looked like an alien spacecraft but those aren't real. As Sarah walked up to it, a door at the base opened. Then, faint pink glowing figures appeared in the door way. They looked like the aliens on Men-in-Black. They practically glowed in the dark! My heart skipped a beat when one of the creatures raised its finger and pointed at me. Then it moved its finger towards the craft. I wasn't sure, but I got the impression that they wanted me to go with them. I took a step forward. I felt their icy cold hands grip my shoulder and shove me in!!!Then I felt the ship shake and vibrate and I got butterflies in my stomach as we lifted off! Up we went. I looked out the window and tried to get out, but it was no use. I peered out the window again and saw a planet. I figured it was Mars. Then I felt the ship's familiar shake again. It slowed down and stopped. The door slowly opened again. The aliens pushed me out. I stepped out onto the mushy ground. Then I realized something was wrong! Humans can't breathe the air in space! In Nate's village, the current may would select his replacement and take his replacement to see Dragon's Cave when he was twelve years old. This replacement could be the mayor's son or someone else, but Nate's father, who was mayor before him, picked Nate to be his replacement. Every village around here makes sure of that. They give up a sheep or cow. It doesn't have to be your best; it just has to fill the dragon's stomach," the mayor would explain. Every replacement would ask, "What do we get out of it?" "Well, we don't get eaten." The mayor would look at the boy who was going to end up with the job. "Before the first mayor worked out this deal, once a year the dragon would fly through the village, and if we were lucky, a few of us would survive." As Nate and his father stood high on the mountain, his father explained that their village was very poor.
